His spiritual and pastoral journey began with the Church of England, followed by a brief time in Congregationalism, and finally landing with the Particular Baptists. Knollys was an educated Baptist clergyman, having graduated from Cambridge University, who published over twenty-five works in his lifetime. Zealous for the Lord, previously published by Barry Howson and Dennis Bustin, allows the reader to get a glimpse of the man and his thought. This book, Christ Exalted, allows the reader to penetrate deeper into his thought by reading some of his more pastoral works. In addition, Knollys was taken up with the signs of the times and eschatology. Consequently, the final chapter of this book includes a chapter on his eschatological thought taken from six of his works that address this subject.

Book Christ Humbled yet Exalted

Download or read book Christ Humbled yet Exalted written by John Flavel and published by Reformation Heritage Books. This book was released on 2021-07-23 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Flavel shows Christ as our fountain of true joy: secured for his people by his humiliation and his exaltation. By humiliation, Flavel means the incarnation - Christ’s birth, ministry, and death - by exaltation he means the four stages of resurrection, ascension, intercession, and His return in judgment. Flavel shows this twofold act (humiliation and exaltation) is the foundation of our joy because through them Christ has removed our debt and secured our inheritance. “The believer knows,” says Flavel, “that however sweet his communion with Christ is in this world, yet that communion he will have with Christ in heaven will far excel it.” Table of Contents: Christ’s Humiliation A Humble Life A Prayer of Commendation A Commemorative Sign Christ’s Agony The Nature of Christ’s Death A Lonely Death A Lowly Death A Prayer for Forgiveness A Promise of Salvation A Cry of Forsakenness A Cry of Anguish The Completion of Christ’s Work Christ’s Burial The Blessed Ends of Christ’s Humiliation Christ’s Exaltation Christ’s Resurrection Christ’s Ascension Christ’s Present Session Christ’s Triumphant Return

Download or read book Exalted Above the Heavens written by Peter Orr and published by Apollos. This book was released on 2018-11 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christians usually focus on what Jesus has done (his life, death and resurrection) and what he will do (his second coming and reign). While there has been something of a revival in the study of his ascension, studies of Jesus in his exalted state are relatively rare. However, the Christ that Christians trust in, relate to, and love is the one who not only lived, died, rose, and will come again: he is also currently seated at God's right hand. Christian faith as well as theological reflection must take into consideration this significant aspect of Christ's person and work. In this New Studies in Biblical Theology volume, Peter Orr attends to this somewhat neglected "sub-epoch" of biblical theology. He explores the New Testament witness to Jesus as he is now, the exalted Christ, through the lenses of his identity, his location, and his activity. Addressing key issues in biblical theology, the works comprising New Studies in Biblical Theology are creative attempts to help Christians better understand their Bibles. The NSBT series is edited by D. A. Carson, aiming to simultaneously instruct and to edify, to interact with current scholarship and to point the way ahead. --

A devotional message of faith and hope for you. Charles Haddon (CH) Spurgeon,19 June 1834 - 31 January 1892) was a British Particular Baptist preacher. Spurgeon remains highly influential among Christians of various denominations, among whom he is known as the "Prince of Preachers". He was a strong figure in the Reformed Baptist , defending the Church in agreement with the 1689 London Baptist Confession of Faith understanding, and opposing the liberal and pragmatic theological tendencies in the Church of his day. It is estimated that in his lifetime, Spurgeon preached to around 10,000,000 people,Spurgeon was the pastor of the congregation of the New Park Street Chapel (later the Metropolitan Tabernacle) in London for 38 years. He was part of several controversies with the Baptist Union of Great Britain and later had to leave the denomination. In 1867, he started a charity organisation which is now called Spurgeon's and works globally. He also founded Spurgeon's College, which was named after him posthumously. Spurgeon was a prolific author of many types of works including sermons, an autobiography, commentaries, books on prayer, devotionals, magazines, poetry, hymns and more. Many sermons were transcribed as he spoke and were translated into many languages during his lifetime. Spurgeon produced powerful sermons of penetrating thought and precise exposition. His oratory skills held his listeners spellbound in the Metropolitan Tabernacle and many Christians have discovered Spurgeon's messages to be among the best in Christian literature.

Book The Resurrection of the Messiah

Download or read book The Resurrection of the Messiah written by Christopher Bryan and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2011-03-21 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Resurrection of the Messiah, Christopher Bryan combines literary, historical, and theological approaches in a study of the doctrine of the Resurrection. The book is divided into three parts. The first section provides a careful and sympathetic description of first-century Jewish and pagan opinions and beliefs about death and what might follow. This is followed by a presentation of a general account of early Christian claims about the death and resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth. The second part of the book offers a detailed, full-length commentary on and exegesis of the main New Testament texts that speak of Jesus' death and resurrection: 1 Corinthians 15 and the narratives in the four canonical gospels. As a framework for this commentary, Bryan utilizes the pattern of apostolic preaching presented by Paul and then echoed by each of the four evangelists, namely the formula "Christ died, Christ was buried, Christ has been raised, Christ appeared." The final section of the book is spent discussing and evaluating various proposals that have been made by those attempting to explain the data in ways that differ from the traditional Christian explanation. Bryan also considers various theological and ethical implications of accepting the claim "Jesus Christ has been raised from the dead." Throughout his study, Bryan exhibits a willingness to face hard questions as well as an appropriate reverence for a faith that for almost two thousand years has enabled millions of people to lead lives of meaning and grace.

Book excerpt: How does the Holy Spirit indwell the believer, and why should one seek that experience? In this collection of articles based on over twenty years' personal experience as well as academic study, the author, an ordained minister and seminary graduate, relates Spirit Baptism and spiritual gifts to their source, the exalted Jesus Christ. He describes this Exaltation of Christ and constructs a theory of how the Holy Spirit indwells the believer, drawing from psychology and medical science as well as Scripture. Finally, he proposes a new Theology of Exaltation that sees the whole sweep of church history as the ongoing glorification of Christ and Redemption of the world.

Book Christ Exalted Sermons of Jonathan Edwards

Download or read book Christ Exalted Sermons of Jonathan Edwards written by Jonathan Edwards and published by . This book was released on 2017-06 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though largely associated with the Great Awakening, Jonathan Edwards leaves an amazing legacy as a theologian and preacher. Wrestling in his day with the Enlightenment and the Age of Reason, he faced the emerging climate of humanistic rationalism over the teaching of a personal and loving God. He battled the problem of spiritual deadness by recognizing the necessity of a personal religious experience and by embracing the supernatural work of the Holy Spirit to awaken and illuminate the heart. Jonathan Edwards left a remarkable body of work, including the seven sermons featured in this collection on the "excellency of Christ." Christ Exalted Sermons of Jonathan Edwards is a fine sampling from this renowned preacher. Each sermon is a brilliant and personal invitation to know God through both our intellect and our affections--compelling us to open our hearts to the sweet love and joy available to us in our life in Christ. This collection includes the following seven sermons: - Safety, Fullness, and Sweet Refreshment in Christ - The Excellency of Christ - Jesus Christ the Same Yesterday, Today, and Forever - Christ Exalted - True Saints, When Absent from the Body, Are Present with the Lord - Christ, the Example of Ministers - Christ's Agony

Book The Ascension of Christ

  • Author : Patrick Schreiner
  • Publisher : Lexham Press

Download or read book The Ascension of Christ written by Patrick Schreiner and published by Lexham Press. This book was released on 2020-07-29 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It's essential to the Gospel, but we rarely talk about it. The good news of Jesus includes his life, death, resurrection, and future return--but what about his ascension? Though often neglected or misunderstood, the ascension is integral to the gospel. In The Ascension of Christ, Patrick Schreiner argues that Jesus' work would be incomplete without his ascent to God's right hand. Not only a key moment in the Gospel story, Jesus' ascension was necessary for his present ministry in and through the church. Schreiner argues that Jesus' residence in heaven marks a turning point in his three-fold offices of prophet, priest, and king. As prophet, Jesus builds the church and its witness. As priest, he intercedes before the Father. As king, he rules over all. A full appreciation of the ascension is essential for understanding the Bible, Christian doctrine, and Christ's ongoing work in the world.
