Book excerpt: Five hundred years ago, the Catholic priest and monk Martin Luther nailed his Ninety-five Theses on a church door in Wittenburg, Germany, to publicly protest against what he saw as Medieval Roman Catholicism's abusive practices in the sale of indulgences. From this disputation came the start of the Protestant Reformation, a movement that not only transformed Europe, but would eventually change the face of Christianity the world over. Nearly a billion Christians today find their roots in this protest movement. In Christ Alone takes a brief look at the five theological pillars of this Reformation and how each applies to believers today. This marvelously written book highlights key Scripture verses, historical elements and the five sola statements. The book's superb craftsmanship is visible from the inside out with stitched luxleather and gold foiled title. The creatively designed emblem represents the key themes with Christ as the center. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In our postmodern, pluralistic world, there are plenty of genuinely spiritual people who consider Christ a way to heaven, or even their way to heaven, but who refuse to acknowledge Him as the one and only way for everyone. In their estimation, anyone who stresses an exclusive, saving faith in Jesus Christ is at the least intolerant and, at worst, completely ignorant. Yet as Rod Rosenbladt shows in this booklet, there are numerous evidences that support the centrality and exclusivity of Christ. He draws on these here to affirm that even in the face of sophisticated theological attacks, God's Word--and Christ's unique claims--still hold true. In defending solus Christus Christians need not disregard the noble words or deeds of unbelievers throughout history. But there is One whose words and works stand far above all others, and whose entire existence proved His exclusive claims. And He deserves not only our worship, but our witness before a lost world.

Download or read book Christus Victor written by Gustaf Aulen and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2003-09-05 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gustaf Aulen's classic work, 'Christus Victor', has long been a standard text on the atonement. Aulen applies history of ideas' methodology to historical theology in tracing the development of three views of the atonement. Aulen asserts that in traditional histories of the doctrine of the atonement only two views have usually been presented, the objective/Anselmian and the subjective/Aberlardian views. According to Aulen, however, there is another type of atonement doctrine in which Christ overcomes the hostile powers that hold humanity in subjection, at the same time that God in Christ reconciles the world to Himself. This view he calls the "classic" idea of the atonement. Because of its predominance in the New Testament, in patristic writings, and in the theology of Luther, Aulen holds that the classic type may be called the distinctively Christian idea of the atonement.

Book Christ Alone

  • ISBN : 9781497437968
  • Pages : 228 pages

Download or read book Christ Alone written by Chad L. Bird and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2014-04-17 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “For I determined to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ, and Him crucified.” St. Paul's words to the Christians at Corinth are his words to the believers of every generation. Christ alone is the proclamation of the church. He is therefore the one who permeates every page of these meditations and sermons. In rich and colorful language that is steeped in the account of creation, the Passover, the worship life of Israel, and the Gospels, the author focuses the reader on the crucified and risen Jesus. The meditations and sermons in this book were written over the course of many years, and preached in a variety of contexts. The earliest of them, one that has come to be called “The Amy Sermon” (p. 193), was preached while Chad Bird was serving as a vicar at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Lakewood, Colorado, in the mid 1990's. A few of them were written for St. Paul Lutheran Church, Wellston, Oklahoma, where he served as pastor from 1997-2001. The majority of them were delivered from the pulpit of Kramer Chapel, on the campus of Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne, Indiana, where he served as Assistant Professor of Exegetical Theology from 2001-2006.Many of the selections were originally published in a collection entitled, Christ Crucified: Lutheran Sermons, which is now out-of-print. In addition to those sermons, there are many new meditations and homilies, all of which deliver the riches of the Gospel to sinners in need of the forgiveness, life, and salvation that is found in Christ alone.

Book Salvation by Allegiance Alone

Download or read book Salvation by Allegiance Alone written by Matthew W. Bates and published by Baker Academic. This book was released on 2017-03-14 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are saved by faith when we trust that Jesus died for our sins. This is the gospel, or so we are taught. But what is faith? And does this accurately summarize the gospel? Because faith is frequently misunderstood and the climax of the gospel misidentified, the gospel's full power remains untapped. While offering a fresh proposal for what faith means within a biblical theology of salvation, Matthew Bates presses the church toward a new precision: we are saved solely by allegiance to Jesus the king. Instead of faith alone, Christians must speak about salvation by allegiance alone. The book includes discussion questions for students, pastors, and church groups and a foreword by Scot McKnight.
