Book Christ Alive and at Large

Download or read book Christ Alive and at Large written by Robert Morgan and published by Canterbury Press. This book was released on 2013-01-07 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The renowned Anglican biblical scholar Charlie Moule, as he was popularly known, came from an eminent church and missionary family. He obtained a first at Cambridge and trained for ordination at Ridley Hall where his grandfather was once Principal and where he himself became Vice-Principal at the age of 28. His Cambridge career culminated in his appointment as Lady Margaret Professor of Divinity, a post he held for 25 years, where he influenced a generation of Anglican leaders including Rowan Williams (at whose wedding he officiated), John Sentamu and the late Graham Stanton, his successor as Lady Margaret Professor. Charlie Moule died in 2007. He wrote a number of definitive texts in New Testament studies, but here is not the scholarly professor, but the humble and prayerful man (nicknamed 'Holy Mouley') reflecting widely on Christian practice and belief, biblical questions and contemporary challenges. The text of Rowan Williams' memorial service address is included and his nephew Patrick Moule, provides a preface.

Based on his Cadbury lectures delivered in 1967, The Go-Between God is now considered one of the most important works ever written on the Holy Spirit and mission. Book What s the Big Deal About Jesus

Download or read book What s the Big Deal About Jesus written by John Ankerberg and published by ATRI Publishing. This book was released on 2011-05-20 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why is popular culture---in movies books and TV documentaries---expressing renewed interest in Jesus? And why 2000 years after His death does He continue to exert such enormous influence on our world? Tragically the search for answers has been made more difficult by the abundance of erroneous information coming from secular scholars and uninformed media sources. In this volume Bible experts and researchers John Ankerberg and Dillon Burroughs (Middle East Meltdown: Oil Israel and the Religion Behind the Crisis) sort out fact from fiction and provide answers about history's most controversial figure---who Jesus really was what He really taught why He died on a cross and the evidence for His resurrection and His claim to be the Lord and Savior of this world. This is an ideal resource for Christians who want to be equipped to answer the tough questions others are asking about Jesus as well as for non-Christians who are either skeptical or are on a serious quest for truth.

Book Jude and the Relatives of Jesus in the Early Church

Download or read book Jude and the Relatives of Jesus in the Early Church written by Richard Bauckham and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2015-01-29 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is an original and important contribution to the study of the earliest Palestinian Jewish Christianity. For the first time all the evidence for the role which relatives of Jesus played in the early church is assembled and assessed. Dr. Bauckham discusses a wide range of evidence, not only from the New Testament but also from the Church Fathers, the New Testament Apocrypha, rabbinic literature and Palestinian archaeology. The letter of Jude, in particular, proves to have much to teach us about the theology of the brothers of Jesus and their circle. It illuminates their exegetical methods and their Christology and shows both to have been influential contributions to the development of early Christianity. This study shows that this neglected New Testament book is far more important for the study of early Christianity than has hitherto been recognized. By setting the letter of Jude within the context of the evidence for the role of relatives of Jesus in the early church, new insights can be revealed into the letter and early Jewish Christianity.

Book The Homeric Epics and the Gospel of Mark

Download or read book The Homeric Epics and the Gospel of Mark written by Dennis Ronald MacDonald and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this groundbreaking book, Dennis R. MacDonald offers an entirely new view of the New Testament gospel of Mark. The author of the earliest gospel was not writing history, nor was he merely recording tradition, MacDonald argues. Close reading and careful analysis show that Mark borrowed extensively from the Odyssey and the Iliad and that he wanted his readers to recognise the Homeric antecedents in Mark's story of Jesus. Mark was composing a prose anti-epic, MacDonald says, presenting Jesus as a suffering hero modeled after but far superior to traditional Greek heroes. Much like Odysseus, Mark's Jesus sails the seas with uncomprehending companions, encounters preternatural opponents, and suffers many things before confronting rivals who have made his house a den of thieves. In his death and burial, Jesus emulates Hector, although unlike Hector Jesus leaves his tomb empty. Mark's minor characters, too, recall Homeric predecessors: Bartimaeus emulates Tiresias; Joseph of Arimathea, Priam; and the women at the tomb, Helen, Hecuba, and Andromache. And, entire episodes in Mark mirror Homeric episodes, including stilling the sea, walking on water, feeding the multitudes, the Triumphal E

Book GOD End time Updates His Call to The Multitudes

This book was released on 2019-08-20 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I, The Lord Jesus, speak throughout The Earth— to all who would prepare for an ongoing life with Me. For there, in the presence of an ongoing life with Me, is fullness of expression, is fullness in achievement of potential, is fullness of attainment in the company of God. I, The Lord Jesus, reach out to have the multitudes come to an understanding, come to an appreciation of all My open offer does include, come forth to witness the power and the miracles of God, come forth to stand and to receive My gift of Tongues in bringing the reality of God: unto each seeking life at large. I, The Lord Jesus, approach man when he is at home and possessive, when he is active and thinking, when he is vibrant and alive, when he is resting and at peace, when he is recalling and considering the reason for his being. I, The Lord Jesus, await a mortal response from man, a time-limited response in answer to the question: wherein reposes the solitude of man, wherein reposes the objectives of man, wherein reposes the garnering of man, wherein reposes the sovereignty of God: wherein the question of the thoughtful surfaces as— Why is the freewill of man of such importance to God? Why is the freewill of man such a determinant of the ultimate destiny of man? Why is the freewill of man either respected or honoured by God? Why is the freewill of man ‘Honoured’ by his movements within the new covenant.

Download or read book What Did Jesus Look Like written by Joan E. Taylor and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jesus Christ is arguably the most famous man who ever lived. His image adorns countless churches, icons, and paintings. He is the subject of millions of statues, sculptures, devotional objects and works of art. Everyone can conjure an image of Jesus: usually as a handsome, white man with flowing locks and pristine linen robes. But what did Jesus really look like? Is our popular image of Jesus overly westernized and untrue to historical reality? This question continues to fascinate. Leading Christian Origins scholar Joan E. Taylor surveys the historical evidence, and the prevalent image of Jesus in art and culture, to suggest an entirely different vision of this most famous of men. He may even have had short hair.

Book excerpt: The book, The Church: The Body of Christ-Preaching Through Ephesians, is looking at the Church in all of its many dimensions and understanding that as a body of Christ; the Church must tear down the barriers of classism, sexism and racism. Upon reading through the book of Ephesians, the author saw that the body of Christ must be large enough to include all people and the issues that Paul saw in the body of Christ are still alive today. The sermons in this book were preached at the Corinthian Missionary Baptist Church, where the author serves as Pastor. I pray that they inspire others as they inspired that congregation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From acclaimed bestselling author James Runcie, a meditation on grief and music, told through the story of Bach's writing of the St. Matthew Passion. In 1727, Stefan Silbermann is a grief-stricken thirteen-year-old, struggling with the death of his mother and his removal to a school in distant Leipzig. Despite his father's insistence that he try not to think of his mother too much, Stefan is haunted by her absence, and, to make matters worse, he's bullied by his new classmates. But when the school's cantor, Johann Sebastian Bach, takes notice of his new pupil's beautiful singing voice and draws him from the choir to be a soloist, Stefan's life is permanently changed. Over the course of the next several months, and under Bach's careful tutelage, Stefan's musical skill progresses, and he is allowed to work as a copyist for Bach's many musical works. But mainly, drawn into Bach's family life and away from the cruelty in the dorms and the lonely hours of his mourning, Stefan begins to feel at home. When another tragedy strikes, this time in the Bach family, Stefan bears witness to the depths of grief, the horrors of death, the solace of religion, and the beauty that can spring from even the most profound losses. Joyous, revelatory, and deeply moving, The Great Passion is an imaginative tour de force that tells the story of what it was like to sing, play, and hear Bach's music for the very first time.
