He takes ex-mayor Sheldon’s money to use his helicopter to surveil the ranch where the new acting mayor—Albert—is living. Even hearing the crazy family rumors about Albert, Enrique thinks Sheldon’s infatuation is due to the fact that the ranch is not only the place where Albert lives but also where the sheriff’s partner works. Sheldon’s actions against the sheriff caused the guy to get fired, after all. Enrique figures Sheldon wants to get some sort of blackmail information on them all. Still, money is money, and Enrique needs it. When Enrique’s trips during the day turn up nothing, Sheldon insists Enrique fly by at night. He spots something he can’t explain right before something slams into his bird. Struggling to control his descent, he hits his head. As he slides into unconsciousness, he figures that’s the end. Enrique’s surprised to wake up, safe and sound, in the arms of…something. He learns gargoyles are real, and he’s the mate of one named Trynche. Enrique knows he can never allow the ex-mayor to find out the truth. Except, Sheldon learns a little something another way and demands Enrique’s help in exposing the monsters. With the help of his new friends, can Enrique shut down Sheldon for good and keep their secrets safe?

Book Surprised at Being Alive

Download or read book Surprised at Being Alive written by Robert F. Curtis and published by Casemate. This book was released on 2014-12-30 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sometimes you do everything right, but it just isnÕt your day. A part fails and your helicopter comes apart in flight, or, another aircraft runs into you and the pieces of both fall to the ground below, or the enemy gunner pulls the trigger at just the right moment and his rounds find your aircraft in exactly the right spot to take it out of the sky. Whichever way it happens, it wasnÕt your day. Which is why, after 24 years and over 5,000 flight hours with four armed services, Major Robert Curtis was so surprised at being alive when he passed his retirement physical. Starting with enlisting in the Army to fly helicopters during Vietnam, and continuing on through service with the National Guard, Marine Corps and Royal Navy, he flew eight different helicoptersÑfrom the wooden-bladed OH-13E, through the Chinook, SeaKnight and SeaKing, in war and peace around the world. During that time over 50 of his friends died in crashes, both in combat and in accidents, but somehow his skill, and not an inconsiderable amount of luck and superstition, saw him through. His flying career began with a misbegotten strategy for beating the draft by enlisting. With the Vietnam War raging full blast in 1968 the draft was inevitable, so he wanted to at least get some small measure of control of his future. Although he had no thought of flying when he walked into the recruiting office, he walked out signed up to be a helicopter pilot. What he did not know was that 43% of all the aircraft sent to Vietnam were destroyed in combat or accidents. Soon he was in the thick of the war, flying Chinooks with the 101st Airborne. After Vietnam he left the Army, but kept flying in the National Guard while going to college. He was accepted at two law schools, but flying is addictive, so he instead enlisted in the USMC to fly some more. Over the next 17 years he would fly around the world off US and British ships from Egypt to Norway and all points in between. His engaging story will be a delight to all aviation enthusiasts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the true story of a man who turns his childhood love of the great outdoors and his day dreams about wild and far-off places into a wonderful reality. At twenty, in 1965, he leaves his family in England to work in New Zealand, New Guinea, Australia and South Africa. Camping, hunting and fishing fill his spare time, often alone in wild remote country with primitive people. Returning to England five years later his love for Africa is confirmed. Eventually, Zululand draws him back to an exciting and often dangerous life in the bush. In Hluhluwe, the oldest game reserve in Africa, he becomes involved in wildlife management. Often tinged with humour, the story presents descriptions of life in the bush, his colleagues, zoological and botanical work, close encounters with big game, and problems facing managers and scientists. Settling down to share his love of the bush with his new wife and daughter, descriptions of Zululand come straight from his heart. In 1987, they leave troubled South Africa to settle in England. He works on a country estate with trips to Dartmoor and the Scottish Highlands, revisiting New Zealand and a changed South Africa. In 2005 they settle in Crete, Greece.
