Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fourteenth Edition continues in, while aspiring to update and enhance, a proud tradition. This is a teaching book, with at least two features that distinguish it from other books. First, because the editors believe that students benefit from sustained engagement with Supreme Court opinions, pivotal cases are edited less substantially than in many other books. Second, because Constitutional Law is an argumentative practice situated in ongoing debates, this edition follows its predecessors in exposing students to diverse perspectives in the scholarly literature. By conjoining large chunks of Supreme Court analysis with diverse perspectives from the scholarly literature, this edition should furnish instructors with the resources to teach a broadly intellectual as well as a doctrinally sophisticated Constitutional Law course. Not insignificantly, the book also strives for evenhandedness. It imposes no overarching normative or conceptual vision that teachers must either embrace or "teach against." Publication of this edition occurs at a time of substantial flux in constitutional doctrine, a reflection of the appointment of four new Justices between 2017 and 2022. Accordingly, some revisions from prior editions stand out. For instance, Chapter 6, on Individual Rights, has been substantially revised in light of recent decisions concerning abortion and firearms. Chapter 8, on the Religion Clauses, includes important recent cases from both the Court's plenary and emergency dockets. Chapter 9, on Equal Protection, accurately depicts case law as this book goes to press, but major change could come in the wake of decisions by the Supreme Court in pending affirmative action cases.
Download or read book Leading Cases in Constitutional Law written by Jesse H. Choper and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An annually-revised paperback designed for a single-semester course on constitutional law, this book is roughly half the length of many hardcover casebooks. The six renowned authors, now including Michael Dorf and Frederick Schauer, are co-editors of a long-time favorite teaching book, the much larger Constitutional Law: Cases, Comments & Questions, 12th edition. "Leading Cases," which is a stripped-down version of that book, contains "the essentials" for teaching a basic course in constitutional law. Because the organization of the compact book parallels that of the much lengthier Choper - Fallon - Kamisar - Shiffrin - Dorf - Schauer casebook, which contains extensive Notes & Questions, the latter can serve as a "resource" book for instructors teaching from the paperback. Subsequent editions of "Leading Cases" will continue to be published every summer for classroom use in the fall and will include all the significant cases handed down during the most recent Supreme Court Term.

Download or read book Interpreting Law written by William N. Eskridge (Jr.) and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ""Interpreting Law" is an accessible introduction to statutory and constitutional interpretation by the nation's leading legislation scholar. This concise treatise not only identifies the primary "canons" or precepts that guide interpretation, but demonstrates how they operate and interact, as a matter of both practice and evolving aspiration. Unlike earlier academic treatises, which rummage through a potpourri of often arcane Supreme Court decisions, Professor Eskridge's new book focuses on a statute prohibiting "vehicles" in Lafayette Park, across the street from the White House. Each chapter engages the law student and the experienced practitioner to consider the application of the statute and its statutory and institutional context to a wide and often delightful array of situations. As the preface by Justice John Paul Stevens suggests, the reader will emerge from this book with a deeply enriched understanding of-and excitement about-legal interpretation."
