Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to try to help anyone maintain what I call living on top of the mountain: in a pure, contented, happy state of mind. I remember pockets in my life when I was so happy, but wondered why they were so f leeting. It was like reaching the top of a mountainbut never being able to stay there. I found myself always sliding slowly backwards, or simply standing in the valley below, looking up and wondering what happened. Over the years, Ive come to understand that the only way to stay near the top of the mountain is to constantly remind yourselfdaily, weekly, monthlyof all of the things that are important to you. Without constant reminders we forget how we got to the top and revert back to our old ways. It isnt even our fault, because its in our nature; it happens with or without our permission. We simply have to commit to combating it! I dont know about you, but I want to live a fulfilled life, with happiness, health, and accomplishments for myself, my family and the betterment of others. I want to live on top of the mountain every single day of my life, and Im willing to do what I can to try to accomplish that.

Download or read book Radical Simplicity written by Jim Merkel and published by New Society Publishers. This book was released on 2003-09-03 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Imagine you are first in line at a potluck buffet. The spread includes not just food and water, but all the materials needed for shelter, clothing, healthcare, and education. How do you know how much to take? How much is enough to leave for your neighbors behind you - not just the six billion people, but the wildlife, and the as-yet-unborn? In the face of looming ecological disaster, many people feel the need to change their own lifestyles as a tangible way of transforming our unsustainable culture. Radical Simplicity is the first book that guides the reader to a personal sustainability goal, then offers a process to monitor progress to a lifestyle that is equitable amongst all people, species, and generations. It employs three tools to help readers begin their customized journey to simplicity: It builds on steps from Your Money or Your Life so readers can design their own personal economics to save money, get free of debt, and align their work with their values. It uses refined tools from Our Ecological Footprint so readers can measure how much nature is needed to supply all they consume and absorb their waste. And by advocating time alone in wild nature, it opens readers to another reality with humanity as one species among many on a complex and inter-related planet. Combining lyrical narrative, compassionate advocacy and absorbing science, Radical Simplicity is a practical, personal answer to 21st century challenges that will appeal as much to Cultural Creatives and students as to spiritual seekers, policy makers and sustainability professionals.

This book was released on 2020-08-24 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Simplicity is a hard thing. As the legendary Jony Ive, Apple's former Chief Design Officer, once said, the challenge is "to solve incredibly complex problems and make their resolution appear inevitable and incredibly simple". Today, as technology becomes more complex than we can process, how do we hold on to that precious thread of simplicity? How do we design products and systems that are human-centred? How do we put innovation back in our own hands, even as we drive radical digital transformation? The Simplicity Playbook for Innovators shows the way. It introduces five strategic shifts that will transform the way you look at your business - from customer research to product/service development. In each strategic shift, you will find a wealth of practical tools that have been applied and tested, particularly in legacy companies dealing with complex processes and systems. When we focus on simplicity instead of innovation-for-the-sake-of-innovation, customers love the experience. With this illuminating step-by-step guide, you will rediscover how to focus on what really matters for your business, and learn the methods to create experiences that win customers' hearts

Book Celebration of Discipline

Download or read book Celebration of Discipline written by Richard J. Foster and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 1988-10-05 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the twenty years since its publication, Celebration of Discipline has helped over a million seekers discover a richer spiritual life infused with joy, peace, and a deeper understanding of God. For this special twentieth anniversary edition, Richard J. Foster has added an introduction, in which he shares the story of how this beloved and enduring spiritual guidebook came to be. Hailed by many as the best modern book on Christian spirituality, Celebration of Discipline explores the "classic Disciplines," or central spiritual practices, of the Christian faith. Along the way, Foster shows that it is only by and through these practices that the true path to spiritual growth can be found. Dividing the Disciplines into three movements of the Spirit, Foster shows how each of these areas contribute to a balanced spiritual life. The inward Disciplines of meditation, prayer, fasting, and study, offer avenues of personal examination and change. The outward Disciplines of simplicity, solitude, submission, and service, help prepare us to make the world a better place. The corporate Disciplines of confession, worship, guidance, and celebration, bring us nearer to one another and to God. Foster provides a wealth of examples demonstrating how these Disciplines can become part of our daily activities-and how they can help us shed our superficial habits and "bring the abundance of God into our lives." He offers crucial new insights on simplicity, demonstrating how the biblical view of simplicity, properly understood and applied, brings joy and balance to our inward and outward lives and "sets us free to enjoy the provision of God as a gift that can be shared with others." The discussion of celebration, often the most neglected of the Disciplines, shows its critical importance, for it stands at the heart of the way to Christ. Celebration of Discipline will help motivate Christians everywhere to embark on a journey of prayer and spiritual growth.

Book Voluntary Simplicity rev

Download or read book Voluntary Simplicity rev written by Duane Elgin and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 1993 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Voluntary Simplicity was first published in 1981, it quickly became recognized as a powerful and visionary work in the emerging dialogue over sustainable ways of living. Now, more than ten years later and with many of the planet's environmental stresses having become more urgent than ever, Duane Elgin has revised and updated his revolutionary book. Voluntary Simplicity is not a book about living in poverty; it is a book about living with balance. It illuminates the pattern of changes that an increasing number of Americans are making in their everyday lives -- adjustments in day-to-day living that are an active, positive response to the complex dilemmas of our time. By embracing, either partially or totally, the tenets of voluntary simplicity -- frugal consumption, ecological awareness, and personal growth -- people can change their lives. And in the process, they have the power to change the world. First published in 1981, Voluntary Simplicity was instantly recognized as a visionary work. The New York Times called it "seminal"; the Wall Street Journal noted that it was "considered the movement's Bible." Revised in 1993 to address the trend toward downshifting, this pertinent book helps us to adjust our thoughts, habits, and goals and embrace the key elements of simplicity: frugal consumption, ecological awareness and personal growth.

Book The Laws of Simplicity

    Book Details:
  • Author : John Maeda
  • Publisher : MIT Press
  • Release : 2006-07-07
  • ISBN : 0262260956
  • Pages : 129 pages

Download or read book The Laws of Simplicity written by John Maeda and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2006-07-07 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ten laws of simplicity for business, technology, and design that teach us how to need less but get more. Finally, we are learning that simplicity equals sanity. We're rebelling against technology that's too complicated, DVD players with too many menus, and software accompanied by 75-megabyte "read me" manuals. The iPod's clean gadgetry has made simplicity hip. But sometimes we find ourselves caught up in the simplicity paradox: we want something that's simple and easy to use, but also does all the complex things we might ever want it to do. In The Laws of Simplicity, John Maeda offers ten laws for balancing simplicity and complexity in business, technology, and design—guidelines for needing less and actually getting more. Maeda—a professor in MIT's Media Lab and a world-renowned graphic designer—explores the question of how we can redefine the notion of "improved" so that it doesn't always mean something more, something added on. Maeda's first law of simplicity is "Reduce." It's not necessarily beneficial to add technology features just because we can. And the features that we do have must be organized (Law 2) in a sensible hierarchy so users aren't distracted by features and functions they don't need. But simplicity is not less just for the sake of less. Skip ahead to Law 9: "Failure: Accept the fact that some things can never be made simple." Maeda's concise guide to simplicity in the digital age shows us how this idea can be a cornerstone of organizations and their products—how it can drive both business and technology. We can learn to simplify without sacrificing comfort and meaning, and we can achieve the balance described in Law 10. This law, which Maeda calls "The One," tells us: "Simplicity is about subtracting the obvious, and adding the meaningful."
