Book Cholecystokinin and Its Antagonists in Pain Management

Download or read book Cholecystokinin and Its Antagonists in Pain Management written by Gary McCleane and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2006-06-22 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examine the strong evidence of this unrealized pain management tool Cholecystokinin (CCK), the regulatory peptide hormone found primarily in the gastrointestinal tract that works as a neurotransmitter throughout the nervous system, has been researched for years. CCK antagonists in conjunction with opioids are beginning to be seen as having possible major therapeutic benefits in pain management. Cholecystokinin and Its Antagonists in Pain Management is an extensive examination that gathers the mounting compelling evidence into one comprehensive source. Here researchers, neuroscientists, physicians, and pharmacy professionals are given the research and findings they need to explore the possible applications of CCK antagonists for a variety of illnesses. Cholecystokinin and Its Antagonists in Pain Management extensively describes opioids in pain management, CCK and the body’s uses for the chemical, CCK receptor antagonists, and the evidence that points to its being a possible breakthrough application in pain management. Various animal studies are offered that present a convincing view of what may be the future of chronic pain management, with less side effects and a reduction in analgesic tolerance than when opioids are used alone. Potential uses of CCK antagonists are clearly discussed. The book is comprehensively referenced and provides several tables and graphs to fully illustrate the research findings. Topics in Cholecystokinin and Its Antagonists in Pain Management include: in vivo localization of CCK CCK as a gut and nervous system peptide factors that increase CCK anti-opioid effects CCK receptor antagonists pro-analgesic effect of CCK antagonists CCK antagonists reducing analgesic tolerance to opioids safety of combining opioids and CCK antagonists human clinical application of CCK antagonists Cholecystokinin and Its Antagonists in Pain Management is a crucial source of the latest information and research results on CCK that is certain to be important for neuroscientists, clinicians, and pharmaceutical industry professionals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the publication of the first edition of Nuclear Hepatology almost 10 years ago, new advances have taken place, both in our understanding of liver pathophysiology and various imaging modalities. A unique feature of imaging of physiology is that it enables quanti- cation. Since liver physiology is complex, quantification has been a challenge. Many p- lications in the past have often included quantification based on home-made software not available for others. Thus, the comparison of results from one center to another becomes difficult, if not impossible. The second edition of Nuclear Hepatology addresses these issues. Sophisticated software for liver and gallbladder function has been tested and va- dated through many of our previous publications. Now that software is FDA approved and available for others through a commercial company, it is hoped that future publications of imaging of liver and gallbladder physiology would routinely include quantification. Although the function of the hepatocyte is complex, it can be broadly divided into two main categories, substrate uptake at the basolateral border and intracellular transit prior to excretion into the canaliculi. The earliest manifestation of hepatocellular injury occurs in the form of prolongation of the intracellular transit time, which occurs long before the disruption of the basolateral border with subsequent rupture and death. The liver enzymes are released into circulation after the death of the hepatocyte.

Book Mediators and Drugs in Gastrointestinal Motility II

Download or read book Mediators and Drugs in Gastrointestinal Motility II written by and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume places more emphasis on endogenous mediators of gut motility than on drugs used to treat patients with deranged motility. In this respect it resembles most other books on gastroenterology, for while only a relatively small number of drugs are really useful for a rational therapy, a tremendous amount of data is available on neural and hormonal factors regulating the motility of the alimentary canal. Moreover, it must be considered that some of the drugs which can routinely be employed to modify deranged motility of the digestive system are represented by pure or slightly modified endogenous compounds (e. g. , cholecystokinin, its C terminal octapeptide and caerulein), and it is easy to foresee that their number is destined to increase in the near future. Other drugs are simply antagonists of physiological substances acting on specific receptors (e. g. , histamine H -blockers 2 and opioid compounds). The real explosion of research in this field and the extreme specialization often connected with the use of very sophisticated techniques and methodologies would probably have required a larger number of experts to cover some very specific fields from both an anatomical (lower esophageal sphincter, stomach, pylorus, small and large intestine) and a biochemical (hormones, candidate hormones, locally active substances, neurotransmitters etc. ) point of view.

Book Peptidergic G Protein coupled Receptors

Download or read book Peptidergic G Protein coupled Receptors written by Pierangelo Geppetti and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peptides are a rapidly growing class of mediators whose activity regulates homeostasis as well as pathological processes. Most of the peptide-activated receptors belong to the superfamily of 7 transmembrane domain receptors coupled to G proteins. Peptides of different sizes (from a few to more than 100 aminoacids) activate peptidergic receptors by interacting at specific sites, that often differ from those where antagonists bind. Other receptors are activated by proteases that, by cleaving the receptor extracellular region, unmask a tethered ligand. G protein-coupled receptors for chemokines represent the way of entry of the HIV virus in target cells. The great impact of non peptide agonist/antagonists in current and future medicine reflects these large variety of functions and modes of activation of peptidergic G protein-coupled receptors.
