Download or read book Biological Aspects of Scenedesmus Chlorophyceae Phenotypic Plasticity written by Francis Rice Trainor and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scenedesmus is is a cosmopolitan green freshwater algae. Because of the colonial symmetry of Scenedesmus, its size/shape differences and abundant cytological features (both LM and EM), it first seemed that individuals could easily be distinguished and classified. Because biologists often examined samples of Scenedesmus taxa at only one point in time, they tacitly assumed that there was stability of form. Are there data confirming stability of form? On the other hand, preserved collections are not useful material to support an alternate hypothesis. The result: hundreds of species and innumerable subspecific taxa were identified and described. In Scenedesmus Phenotypic Plasticity the author presents - Early reports of variability or polymorphism, along with their routine dismissal as supposedly irrelevant observations. - Chapters concerned with geographical distribution, culture techniques, history and the Scenedesmus unicell, indicating the need for the renaissance of the phenotype. The concept of an ordered developmental sequence is developed and discussed. Data from numerous laboratories, whether cytological, morphological, biochemical, ecological or physiological, which lend support to the concept of plasticity in all strains. Numerous supposed taxa are but ecomorphs of rather complex taxa.

Download or read book An Introduction to the Study of Algae written by V. J. Chapman and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2013-12-19 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1941, this book was written to provide an elementary textbook on phycology suitable for university students and schools including visits to marine biological stations as part of their curriculum. Relatively few types are selected from each algae group; some are described in considerable detail whilst others are mentioned to illustrate the course of development in either the vegetative or reproductive organs. Illustrative figures are included throughout. This book will be of value to anyone with an interest in phycology and the history of science.
Download or read book The Fine Structure of Algal Cells written by John D. Dodge and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fine Structure of Algal Cells is a hybrid between a review and a comprehensive descriptive work on fine structure of algae. Such fine structural data are important for any consideration of the classification of algae and for attempting to analyze their phylogenetic relationships. Fine-structure has provided many vital keys to the understanding of the interrelationships and phylogeny of the algae. Notably, the trend in algal fine structure work is toward use of electron microscopy to try to understand the functions of cells and organelles under both normal and experimental conditions. This book brings together information which has been gathered by electron microscopists. It considers 13 classes of algae: Chlorophyceae, Haptophyceae, Prasinophyceae, Bacillariophyceae, Chloromonadophyceae, Phaeophyceae, Euglenophyceae, Dinophyceae, Eustigmatophyceae, Cryptophyceae, Xanthophyceae, Rhodophyceae, and Chrysophyceae. It covers the main structural features of the various classes and the organelles present in typical cells. The book also describes the algal cell covering, flagella, pyrenoid, eyespot, nucleus, and ejectile organelles,as well as membranes, envelope, and stroma of algal chloroplasts. Lastly, it also explains the algal cell division. This book will help students visualize and compare algal structure, and at the same time provide enough references so that research workers can enter the literature to find out more precise details from the original sources.

Download or read book Microalgae written by Milada Vítová and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2020-01-22 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The term microalgae is often used in the algal research community to collectively describe microscopic algae and cyanobacteria. Research of microalgae has expanded enormously, namely because of their significant commercial potential. The thorough knowledge of the physiology of microalgae must precede any commercial exploitation. We have to understand the mechanisms underlying the physiological and biochemical processes in the algal cells. The book Microalgae - From Physiology to Application covers major aspects of microalgae physiology and the possible applications in the sphere of biotechnology. This book gives a comprehensive overview of what is known about microalgae growth and production, secondary metabolites, and development of new species and products for commercialization. This volume should allow readers at all levels an entry into the exciting world of algal research.
