Download or read book Chloe York and the Rescue written by Cindy Hartwell and published by Tate Publishing. This book was released on 2011-04 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chloe wished she could understand what it was she felt about Ivan. She had seen him in so many ways during the past few weeks: first he was a drowning victim to be rescued by her, then he was a bodyguard to her father's colleague, Dr. Slivskuya, then he was a mystery, then a possible killer. His identity had changed by the moment, but all the time that she's known him, even when he was holding a gun in her parent's bedroom, Chloe was never really afraid of him. Adventure with the perceptive Chloe York, as she learns that life is not always as simple as right or wrong, friend or enemy. The lives of the inhabitants and visitors in the sleepy university town of Baskindale, Pennsylvania, will be drastically reshaped—not only by what happens to them, but also by how they choose to react. Follow through the eyes of a bright girl who's been raised to trust her instincts.

Book Olive Borden

  • Pages : 225 pages

Download or read book Olive Borden written by Michelle Vogel and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2010-03-24 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The all too brief career of film star Olive Borden (1906-1947) is chronicled in this definitive biography. Apprenticing in short slapstick silent comedies, the vivacious Virginia-born actress rose to stardom after signing with Fox in 1925, enlivening such films as John Ford's 3 Bad Men (1926). Borden's career declined after she severed her ties with Fox, and by the early 1930s she was finished in Hollywood. Alcoholism and a devastating series of personal setbacks hastened her death at age forty-one. Olive Borden's controversial contract debacle with Fox and her long-term relationship with actor George O'Brien are thoroughly detailed. Personal anecdotes and insights are offered by Ralph Graves, Jr., who befriended Borden in the late 1920s. Dozens of heretofore unattributed screen appearances by the actress are included in the filmography.

Book Easy Beauty

Download or read book Easy Beauty written by Chloé Cooper Jones and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2023-04-04 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in Memoir or Autobiography A New York Times Notable Book of 2022 * Vulture’s #1 Memoir of 2022 * A Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, USA TODAY, Time, BuzzFeed, Publishers Weekly, Booklist, and New York Public Library Best Book of the Year From Chloé Cooper Jones—Pulitzer Prize finalist, philosophy professor, Whiting Creative Nonfiction Grant recipient—an “exquisite” (Oprah Daily) and groundbreaking memoir about disability, motherhood, and the search for a new way of seeing and being seen. “I am in a bar in Brooklyn, listening to two men, my friends, discuss whether my life is worth living.” So begins Chloé Cooper Jones’s bold, revealing account of moving through the world in a body that looks different than most. Jones learned early on to factor “pain calculations” into every plan, every situation. Born with a rare congenital condition called sacral agenesis which affects both her stature and gait, her pain is physical. But there is also the pain of being judged and pitied for her appearance, of being dismissed as “less than.” The way she has been seen—or not seen—has informed her lens on the world her entire life. She resisted this reality by excelling academically and retreating to “the neutral room in her mind” until it passed. But after unexpectedly becoming a mother (in violation of unspoken social taboos about the disabled body), something in her shifts, and Jones sets off on a journey across the globe, reclaiming the spaces she’d been denied, and denied herself. From the bars and domestic spaces of her life in Brooklyn to sculpture gardens in Rome; from film festivals in Utah to a Beyoncé concert in Milan; from a tennis tournament in California to the Killing Fields of Phnom Penh, Jones weaves memory, observation, experience, and aesthetic philosophy to probe the myths underlying our standards of beauty and desirability and interrogates her own complicity in upholding those myths. “Bold, honest, and superbly well-written” (Andre Aciman, author of Call Me By Your Name) Easy Beauty is the rare memoir that has the power to make you see the world, and your place in it, with new eyes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: French composer Maurice Ravel was described by critics as a magician, conjurer, and illusionist. Scholars have been aware of this historical curiosity, but none so far have explained why Ravel attracted such critiques or what they might tell us about how to interpret his music. Magician of Sound examines Ravel's music through the lens of illusory experience, considering how timbre, orchestral effects, figure/ground relationships, and impressions of motion and stasis might be experienced as if they were conjuring tricks. Applying concepts from music theory, psychology, philosophy, and the history of magic, Jessie Fillerup develops an approach to musical illusion that newly illuminates Ravel's fascination with machines and creates compelling links between his music and other forms of aesthetic illusion, from painting and poetry to fiction and phantasmagoria. Fillerup analyzes scenes of enchantment and illusory effects in Ravel's most popular works, including Boléro, La Valse, Daphnis et Chloé, and Rapsodie espagnole, relating his methods and musical effects to the practice of theatrical conjurers. Drawing on a rich well of primary sources, Magician of Sound provides a new interdisciplinary framework for interpreting this enigmatic composer, linking magic and music.
