Book Motion Symmetry Spectroscopy of Chiral Nanostructures

Download or read book Motion Symmetry Spectroscopy of Chiral Nanostructures written by Johannes Sachs and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-01-03 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on complex shaped micro- and nanostructures for future biomedical and sensing applications that were investigated by both theory and experiments. The first part of the book explores rotation-translation coupling of artificial microswimmers at low Reynolds numbers. Usually corkscrew shapes, i.e chiral shapes, are considered in such experiments, due to their inspiration from nature. However, the analysis of the relevant symmetries shows that achiral objects can also be propulsive, which is experimentally demonstrated for the first time. In the second part, a new single-particle spectroscopy technique was developed and the role of symmetry in such measurements is carefully examined. Spectra stemming from one individual nanoparticle that is moving freely in bulk solution, away from a surface, and only due to Brownian motion, are presented. On that basis, the rotationally averaged chiroptical spectrum of a single nanoparticle is measured - a novel observable that has not been accessible before.

Download or read book Chiral Nanophotonics written by Martin Schäferling and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-11-11 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the physics behind the optical properties of plasmonic nanostructures focusing on chiral aspects. It explains in detail how the geometry determines chiral near-fields and how to tailor their shape and strength. Electromagnetic fields with strong optical chirality interact strongly with chiral molecules and, therefore, can be used for enhancing the sensitivity of chiroptical spectroscopy techniques. Besides a short review of the latest results in the field of plasmonically enhanced enantiomer discrimination, this book introduces the concept of chiral plasmonic near-field sources for enhanced chiroptical spectroscopy. The discussion of the fundamental properties of these light sources provides the theoretical basis for further optimizations and is of interest for researchers at the intersection of nano-optics, plasmonics and stereochemistry.

This thoroughly revised second edition covers several new, important areas of chiral analysis that have emerged since the first edition. Three of the new methods provide higher sensitivity than can be realized with the current methods and are expected to become mainstream applications: cavity based methods offer vastly higher sensitivity than conventional polarimetric methods, microwave chiral detection provides unsurpassed sensitivity for identifying diastereomers, and the rotating electric field method offers a competing new approach for the separation of enantiomers. Another topic, chirality in extraterrestrial life, has not been discussed in any other book and is important for understanding the origin of life. Offers the only book to cover both spectroscopic and separation methods in a single volume Provides an up-to-date and detailed review of the various techniques available, including new techniques that have emerged since the first edition Includes contributions from a range of leading experts in the field, now edited by award-winning chirality researcher Prasad Polavarapu
