The author has long felt in his work as a teacher the want of a short history of China. Of larger histories, and of monographs treating fully of some one period, there is no lack, but a concise outline of Chinese history accenting the turning points in the life of the nation has not yet been produced. To reduce the voluminous native histories of China to a small compass is undoubtedly an ambitious undertaking, but yet it is a task that someone must attempt. The average student has not the time nor the inclination to wade through the cumbrous volumes which exist at present, and when he ventures to do so, he often becomes discouraged because of the impossibility of remembering the strange and difficult names of the persons and places with which the pages are crowded, and so perhaps lays down the book without having gained any very clear impression of the history as a whole. It is hoped that this brief survey of the entire field may be of service in making it easier for the reader to fix in his mind the salient points of the long story. The Chinese language, it need hardly be said, is monosyllabic, and each word is represented by a separate character in the written script. These characters were originally pictures of natural objects or ideas, used singly or in combination, and it was not until later that they were distinguished into two categories, as phonetics, and determinatives or radicals. The radicals in modern use are 214, a number arbitrarily fixed for dictionary purposes, as a means of classifying the or more written characters of the language, and of providing a ready means of coining new combinations. The large majority of characters of the modern script are composed of a radical, which gives a clue to the meaning by indicating the particular class of things or ideas to which the combination of which it forms a part belongs, hand a phonetic, which conveys some idea of the sound. His wish was the measure of his appreciation of the worthy writings and paintings that came under his observation. These were the product of man's soul and were quite unlike the work of man's hands in bronze or clay or jade. Through these writings and paintings Chang Ch'ou held communion with the spirits of the' great artists and calligraphists who preceded him, and in their unseen world there were no limits of time or space.
