One day in June, feeling weary of commercial papers and Chinese account-books, I opened a volume of Chinese poetry that was lying on my desk and listlessly turned over the pages. As I was doing so my eye caught sight of the phrase. Red rain of peach flowers fell. That would be refreshing, I said to myself, on such a day as this; and then I went on with my work again. But in the evening I returned to the book of Chinese poetry and made a free translation of the poem in which I had seen the metaphor quoted above. The translation seemed to me and some friends pleasantly readable st) in leisure hours I have translated a few more poems and ballads and these I now venture to publish in a small volume, thinking they may give the readers a little pleasure and also call forth criticism that will be useful in preparing a larger volume which I hope to publish hereafter; for it can hardly be said that hitherto the field of Chinese poetry has been widely explored by foreign students of the Chinese language. A hundred and forty of those I have chosen have not been translated by any one else. The remaining thirty odd I have included in many cases because the previous versions were full of mistakes; in others, because the works in which they appeared are no longer procurable. Moreover, they are mostly in German, a language with which my readers may not all be acquainted. With some hesitation I have included literal versions of six poems (three of the "Seventeen Old Poems," "Autumn Wind," "Li Fu jen," and "On the Death of his Father") already skilfully rhymed by Professor Giles in "Chinese Poetry in English Verse." They were too typical to omit; and a comparison of the two renderings may be of interest. Some of these translations have appeared in the "Bulletin of the School of Oriental Studies," in the "New Statesman," in the "Little Review" (Chicago), and in "Poetry" (Chicago). But the number of Entomologists (in this peculiar sense) has so increased in the last half century, that the eye has become sufficiently familiar with a page of Chinese type; and a newspaper printed in modern Greek has been followed, in our cosmopolitan London, by the Fei-Loong, or "Flying Dragon," a Chinese advertiser, in the original character. Sir James Macintosh, reviewing in the Edinburgh a translation of the Chinese Penal Code by Sir George Staunton, made some striking remarks on its "European good sense," which seems to apply more or less to all branches of Chinese literature.
