Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from China's Millions, 1907: North American Edition Sunday morning about six o'clock the prayer-meeting began. More people had come in and they kept coming until there were about 800 present. The great majority of them know a number of hymns and they have a natu ral gift for singing and love music. At first they were all over the place, but they took to being conducted as if they were accustomed to it. And after a verse or two I got them all together with a swing, and we did sing. One of the helpers gave a little talk about prayer and then we had prayer, prayer, prayer, one after another, some in Chinese, some in Miao, and some half and half. Sometimes two would start together in different parts of the big building; but it was all right. There was no con fusion, and when we did riot understand, the leading of the Spirit was recognized, and, of course if not intelligible to me it was to others. Perhaps ninety per cent. Of the men understand and speak Chinese. It was seldom in the case of men that we had to depute the examination to natives. But few of the women understand or speak Chinese; yet, strange to say, many of them pray quite intelligently in Chinese. After prayer I spoke briefly to them, telling them how since we had heard of their faith and love we had prayed for them and longed to see them. Now the Lord had answered our prayers and we met face to face. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Banner-carrying Salvation Army marchers, stone-silent Quakers, jumpy Midwestern revivalists, and Prayer-book Anglicans all made up the mixed multitude sent to the Middle Kingdom by the China Inland Mission (CIM) in the nineteenth century. In China's Millions veteran historian Alvyn Austin crafts a compelling narrative of the sprawling history of the China Inland Mission. This book introduces readers to a remarkable array of sights, from the visionary, charismatic sect-leader Pastor Hsi, to the "wordless book," a missionary teaching device that fit perfectly with Chinese color cosmology, to the opium-soaked aftermath of the North China Famine of 187779. Clear, readable, and well researched, China's Millions digs deeply into the Chinese and Western past to tell a story of the strange yet hopeful result of two cultures colliding. - Publisher.

Book excerpt: The China Inland Mission (CIM), founded by James Hudson Taylor (1832-1905), has been a major focal point in the research of the history of Christian missions in modern China. Yet there has been a dearth of attention given to Taylor’s successor, Dixon Edward Hoste (1861-1946). Hoste led the CIM through some of their most tumultuous periods, believing that the Chinese church would one day grow by itself, without the dependence on foreign missionaries. In this important study, Dr. Patrick Fung examines the life and work of Dixon Edward Hoste in his thirty-five years as general director of the CIM. Hoste’s faithful friendship with the Chinese church never wavered and this study demonstrates how we can learn from his leadership, exemplifying a model of servanthood. Bringing fresh insights to this field of research, Dr. Fung shows us how the committed work of Hoste should be duly recognized as an integral part of the indigenous movement of modern Chinese Christianity.
