Book The Traveling Minzu

Download or read book The Traveling Minzu written by Mei Ding and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-03-28 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on the everyday experiences of Uyghur business migrants, this book investigates how individuals embody and deploy minzu, one of the fundamental concepts in political and socioeconomic discourses in China after 1949, and how this concept travels to Australia with the migrants. Through research on Uyghurs at the Tarim (pseudonym) restaurant in Ürümchi, Uyghur migrants in other major cities in China, and, finally, the immigrants in multicultural Australia, the author explains how they perceive the concept of minzu and how the concept and identity has been reformed and reshaped in specific social and economic contexts. She argues that these Uyghur migrants’ minzu concept is closely intertwined with citizenship, which entails not only a set of legally defined rights and obligations but also a sense of equality and respect. The book provides a new way of reflecting on who the "Chinese" are and what form the "Chineseness" takes in a transnational context. Following the minzu concept in China and Australia, this book shows how cultural intimacy and critical multiculturalism can provide better sociocultural space for various Muslim migrant communities. This book will appeal to social and cultural anthropologists and university students who are interested in China and Inner Asia, ethnicity, and transnational migration between China and the South Pacific.

Book Major Histocompatibility Complex MHC in Health and Disease

Download or read book Major Histocompatibility Complex MHC in Health and Disease written by Jerzy K. Kulski and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2020-01-15 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The major histocompatibility complex (MHC) is a highly polymorphic and diverse multigene locus in all jawed vertebrate species that has an integral role in adaptive/innate immune systems, transplantation, and infectious and autoimmune diseases. The MHC supra-locus in mammalian vertebrates is usually partitioned into three distinct regions, known as classes I, II, and III, which, to varying extents, can be found conserved in nonmammalian jawed vertebrates, such as bony fish, amphibians, and bird lineages. The MHC gene region is characterized particularly by the expression of class I and class II glycoproteins that bind peptides derived from intracellular or extracellular antigens to circulating T-cells. While this expressed antigenic specificity remains the predominant interest with respect to MHC function and polymorphism in a population, a broader concept has emerged that examines the MHC as a multifunctional polymorphic controller that facilitates and regulates genome diversity with a much greater array of functions and effects than just MHC-restricted antigen recognition. This volume of 19 reprints presented by various experts and collected from the Special Issue of Cells on “MHC in Health and Disease” covers a broad range of topics on the genomic diversity of the MHC regulatory system in various vertebrate species, including MHC class I, II, and III genes; innate and adaptive immunity; neurology; transplantation; haplotypes; infectious and autoimmune diseases; fecundity; conservation; allelic lineages; and evolution. Taken together, these articles demonstrate the immense complexity and diversity of the MHC structure and function within and between different vertebrate species.

Book The People s Republic of China Today

Download or read book The People s Republic of China Today written by Zhiqun Zhu and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2011 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the significant progress it had achieved in the past 60 years, especially in the past 30 years since Deng Xiaoping's reform initiatives in the late 1970s, China faces daunting challenges today. These challenges include, among others, a rigid political system that does not match economic vibrancy, uneven economic growth and widening income gap, a graying population, environmental degradation, potential social instability, ethnic tensions and separatist movement, poor international image, and military modernization. Based on papers originally presented at an international conference held at Bucknell University in Pennsylvania to mark the 60th anniversary of the People's Republic of China (PRC), this book provides an up-to-date, comprehensive, and authoritative assessment of the PRC's political, economic, social, ethnic, energy, security, military, diplomatic and other developments and challenges today. Contributed by scholars and experts in political science, international relations, economics, public administration, history, mass communication, psychology, and diplomacy, the book focuses on the efforts needed by China to grow in a sustainable manner and to become a respected global power. With each chapter addressing a different and yet an inter-related issue of the PRC's development, this book aims to make a significant contribution to the understanding of key challenges the country faces today as it strives to become a global power.

Book China s Evolving Industrial Policies and Economic Restructuring

Download or read book China s Evolving Industrial Policies and Economic Restructuring written by Zheng Yongnian and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-07-11 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past three decades, China has successfully transformed itself from an extremely poor economy to the world’s second largest economy. The country’s phenomenal economic growth has been sustained primarily by its rapid and continuous industrialisation. Currently industry accounts for nearly two-fifth of China’s gross domestic product, and since 2009 China has been the world’s largest exporter of manufactured products. This book explores the question of how far this industrial growth has been the product of government policies. It discusses how government policies and their priorities have developed and evolved, examines how industrial policies are linked to policies in other areas, such as trade, technology and regional development, and assesses how new policy initiatives are encouraging China’s increasing success in new technology-intensive industries. It also demonstrates how China’s industrial policies are linked to development of industrial clusters and regions.
