Book China Human Development Report

Download or read book China Human Development Report written by United Nations Development Programme and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication is the first National Human Development Report (NHDR) for China. Taking its cue from the 1997 global Human Development Report, a first attempt is made in this report to rank according to a Human Development Index the provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities in China. The theme of this report is poverty alleviation. The Report summarizes the history and current status of sustainable human development in China. It then looks at the outstanding challenges to be faced and makes a number of broad policy recommendations for tackling them. Because this is the first national HDR undertaken for China, it establishes a baseline for future efforts by discussing in detail a wide spectrum of development issues, including the distribution of income, health care, education and nutrition, population and migration, the status of women, employment, social, security provision, the state of the natural environment, and the reform of state enterprises. This dialogue between the UNDP and China will be especially conducive to all future exchanges between China and foreign experts on social, development. Anyone interested in China, in particular the international business community, will need this book to understand the current status and future prospects for human development among one fifth of the world's population.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this timely book, a group of leading scholars provides a comprehensive assessment of China's polity, economy, and society. Taking the thirtieth anniversary of Beijing's adoption of reform and opening as an occasion to reflect on the course of development over the past three decades, the contributors consider where the country may be going in the future. Just as China has had enormous success in developing its economy, it continues to face equally enormous challenges across a wide variety of issues, including inequality, social protest, energy, the environment, and a resurgence of religion. As a polity, China has tried to build a modern legal system while balancing center-local relations, sustaining a viable ideological framework, and maintaining stable politics at the elite level. At the same time, the current global economic crisis poses a major obstacle to China's model of development. Authoritative, accessible, and current, this book will be an invaluable resource for all readers interested in the fate of a rising global power. Contributions by: Edward A. Cunningham, Joseph Fewsmith, Sebastian Heilmann, Jamie Horsley, Joanna Lewis, Yawei Liu, Barry Naughton, Elizabeth J. Book China and Post Socialist Development

Download or read book China and Post Socialist Development written by Bolesta, Andrzej and published by Policy Press. This book was released on 2014-11-19 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The re-emergence of China as an economic superpower during its systemic transition is an astonishing phenomenon. China and Post-Socialist Development is the first comprehensive attempt to frame China’s advancements within the context of the East Asian developmental miracle, against the background of post-socialist transformation, asking how has it happened and where does China go from here? In this book the author argues that as China transits from central planning to market, it tries to imitate the institutions and policies of Japan and South Korea during their high growth periods of the second half of the twentieth century. China’s approach – broadly in opposition to the neo-liberal doctrine – has brought impressive results, leading the author to make important predictions about the future. This book is for everybody who is interested in China, development and post-socialist transformation.

Book China s Social Welfare

Download or read book China s Social Welfare written by Joe C. B. Leung and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2015-04-21 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The extraordinary rise of China is one of the greatest global stories of recent times. However, China's development has been described as ‘uneven, uncoordinated, and unsustainable’, and has now reached a critical turning point. To transform itself into a successful high-income economy, China urgently needs to develop a new welfare regime. Social policy and social welfare programmes are pivotal not only to meet mounting social needs but also to promote social cohesion. This timely book explores key turning points in China’s trajectory, from the creation of a socialist egalitarian society promising a relatively stable livelihood at the expense of economic development, through the market-oriented reforms which have dismantled the traditional social protection system. The authors present the formidable social challenges ahead, including demographic shift, residential migration, and corrosive inequalities, and outline the emerging forms of social security protection in urban and rural areas, community-based social care services, non-governmental organizations and the social work profession. To redress inequalities and strengthen social cohesion, China needs to construct a robust developmental and redistributive strategy with shared responsibility between different levels of governments, as well as between civil society, the state and the market. This comprehensive and astute guide to one of China’s key current challenges will be welcomed by students and scholars of social policy, welfare, sociology and political science, and all interested in contemporary China.

Book excerpt: China's path to political reform over the last three decades has been slow, but discourse among Chinese political scientists continues to be vigorous and forward thinking. China's Political Development offers a unique look into the country's evolving political process by combining chapters authored by twelve prominent Chinese political scientists with an extensive commentary on each chapter by an American scholar of the Chinese political system. Each chapter focuses on a major aspect of the development of the Chinese Party-state, encompassing the changing relations among its constituent parts as well as its evolving approaches toward economic gorwth, civil society, grassroots elections, and the intertwined problems of supervision and corruption. Together, these analyses highlight the history, strategy, policies, and implementation of governance reforms since 1978 and the authors' recommendations for future changes. This extensive work provides the deep background necessary to understand the sociopolitical context and intellectual currents. behind the reform agenda announced at the landmark Third Plenum in 2013. Download or read book China at 60 written by Lai-Ha Chan and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2011 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume, China at 60, explores the interactions between China and the world, over the course of 60 years of Communist Party rule since 1949 and the impact of these interactions on China's domestic development. To understand China's development experience and its transformation, it is necessary to examine the trajectory of development from pre-reform to post-reform periods. While the book may concur with previous findings on the changing development of China under economic reform, more importantly, it demonstrates the areas of continuity of the PRC's existence over the entire six decades. To that end, a dual theme ? change-and-continuity and global-local interactions on China's development ? is adopted to assess the historical development of China's policies in various issueareas over the past 60 years. The focus is chiefly on the domestic impacts of China's increasing engagement with the world, the global implications of China's reform efforts and growing power, and the long-lasting uniqueness of this rising non-European nation. The book brings together a team of international experts to share their perspectives on global-local interactions within a range of different topics, including foreign policy, domestic politics, macroeconomic policy, the central-local relations, the People's Liberation Army, public health, energy security, finance and banking, foreign trade, and intellectual property rights, as well as changes in the state's policies towards interest groups such as ethnic minorities and women.
