Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Catholic Church in China: From 1860 to 1907 But this condition is by no means fulfilled, as, far from coinciding in essentials, they are not even agreed in the primary statement of what constitutes those essentials. Were this division confined to Christendom the evil would still be sufficiently serious but when it is carried into the presence of the non-christian world, the harm becomes vastly augmented. For the heathen - by which term non-christians are usually described - not unnaturally asks Why should we adopt Christianity when its very teachers cannot agree among themselves as to wherein precisely it consists? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from China and the Gospel The climate of the country is a matter of much interest. The varieties Of temperature are of course great, from the extreme south to the far distant north. In the former the hot weather lasts for a number of months, at times to an intense degree, while in the central and northern portions of the empire there are only two months of a really hot season, namely, July and August; the remainder of the year is pleasant and agreeable. During the winter, in the latter parts, the air is dry and bracing, and the residents readily gain strength again after the relaxing time of summer. The general salubrity of China is unquestioned by those who have had long experience of it, always allowing of course for the effects of change and other circumstances connected with a new and untried climate. This book was released on 2019-01-30 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In China Now: China's Need and the Christian Contribution To give any adequate account of present developments in China and of the Christian contribution to the new needs thus discovered is beyond the compass of a book so short as this present one. All that can be hoped is that its contents may be suggestive 'in helping readers strange to China better to appreciate the conditions of the country, and the challenge which those conditions offer to Christian statesmanship. The book, as originally written, was somewhat longer, but had to be cut down to come nearer to the limits laid down' by the United Council for Missionary Education. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Voice From China WE have just reached the close of the first hundred years of Protestant missions in China, and I wish to call attention to the contrast between the present and the past. If we compare the state of things to-day with the state of things existing in China in Dr. Morrison's day, we shall be able to some extent to realise how great is the work which has been wrought of God during this period in that great empire. We may also notice that the progress of Christian missions in China is but typical of the advance that has been made throughout the world in the same period. Book A Mission in China Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Mission in China Classic Reprint written by W. E. Soothill and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-03 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Mission in China This book is written chiefly for those who, through many years, have loyally lent their support to the work recorded in the following pages, and whose right it is to know more fully that their faith has been met with faithfulness. It was commenced eighteen months ago in response to repeated requests, and with numerous and prolonged periods of interruption, its compilation has occupied the spare moments of that length of time. Herein are recounted some of the experiences met with, and methods followed during nearly a quarter of a century's work amongst the Chinese, a work that has been rewarded by nearly ten thousand conversions, and an increasing confidence in the universal advent of the Kingdom of God. Its principal object is to depict our own Mission, as typical of many others. In addition five chapters will be found at the end, giving in brief an account of the Chinese religions, religions 36 involved and mutually intermingled that close investigation and considerable reading have been necessary to anything like a clear and succinct delineation. The whole closes with a short history of Christianity in China. It is the misfortune of a book of this character that great demands are made on the first personal pronoun. If the reader finds that letter too oft repeated, his sympathy is craved in consideration of the number of times it has been suppressed. Book excerpt: From the Pulitzer Prize winning journalist: a revelatory portrait of religion in China today, its history, the spiritual traditions of its Eastern and Western faiths, and the ways in which it is influencing China's future. Following a century of violent antireligious campaigns, China is now awash with new temples, churches, and mosques as well as cults, sects, and politicians trying to harness religion for their own ends. Driving this explosion of faith is uncertainty over what it means to be Chinese, and how to live an ethical life in a country that discarded traditional morality a century ago and is still searching for new guideposts. Ian Johnson lived for extended periods with underground church members, rural Daoists, and Buddhist pilgrims. He has distilled these experiences into a cycle of festivals, births, deaths, detentions, and struggle a great awakening of faith that is shaping the soul of the world s newest superpower. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christianity in China: A Fragment The writer desires to explain, that the following pages form only the first chapter of a work in which it is proposed to compare, by a similar method, the results of Catholic and Protestant Missions, not in China alone, but in all parts of the world. As a few months may elapse before the whole mass of evidence collected with this object, and scattered through many volumes, can be finally classified and arranged, - and as special interest attaches at this moment to China, and to the progress of religion in that empire, - it has been suggested by competent authority that this chapter should be printed at once, in a separate form. This is the only explanation which the writer has to offer of so unusual a proceeding. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book The Taiping Heavenly Kingdom written by Thomas H. Reilly and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2011-07-01 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Occupying much of imperial China’s Yangzi River heartland and costing more than twenty million lives, the Taiping Rebellion (1851-64) was no ordinary peasant revolt. What most distinguished this dramatic upheaval from earlier rebellions were the spiritual beliefs of the rebels. The core of the Taiping faith focused on the belief that Shangdi, the high God of classical China, had chosen the Taiping leader, Hong Xiuquan, to establish his Heavenly Kingdom on Earth. How were the Taiping rebels, professing this new creed, able to mount their rebellion and recruit multitudes of followers in their sweep through the empire? Thomas Reilly argues that the Taiping faith, although kindled by Protestant sources, developed into a dynamic new Chinese religion whose conception of its sovereign deity challenged the legitimacy of the Chinese empire. The Taiping rebels denounced the divine pretensions of the imperial title and the sacred character of the imperial office as blasphemous usurpations of Shangdi’s title and position. In place of the imperial institution, the rebels called for restoration of the classical system of kingship. Previous rebellions had declared their contemporary dynasties corrupt and therefore in need of revival; the Taiping, by contrast, branded the entire imperial order blasphemous and in need of replacement. In this study, Reilly emphasizes the Christian elements of the Taiping faith, showing how Protestant missionaries built on earlier Catholic efforts to translate Christianity into a Chinese idiom. Prior studies of the rebellion have failed to appreciate how Hong Xiuquan’s interpretation of Christianity connected the Taiping faith to an imperial Chinese cultural and religious context. The Taiping Heavenly Kingdom shows how the Bible--in particular, a Chinese translation of the Old Testament--profoundly influenced Hong and his followers, leading them to understand the first three of the Ten Commandments as an indictment of the imperial order. The rebels thus sought to destroy imperial culture along with its institutions and Confucian underpinnings, all of which they regarded as blasphemous. Strongly iconoclastic, the Taiping followers smashed religious statues and imperially approved icons throughout the lands they conquered. By such actions the Taiping Rebellion transformed--at least for its followers but to some extent for all Chinese--how Chinese people thought about religion, the imperial title and office, and the entire traditional imperial and Confucian order. This book makes a major contribution to the study of the Taiping Rebellion and to our understanding of the ideology of both the rebels and the traditional imperial order they opposed. It will appeal to scholars in the fields of Chinese history, religion, and culture and of Christian theology and church history.

Book Christian Missions in China Classic Reprint

Download or read book Christian Missions in China Classic Reprint written by Charles Sumner Estes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-25 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Missions in China It would be of great interest to study China as an inter preter of the two extinct civilizations.2 Other inquiries, however, press for an answer: What has preserved this nation through the centuries? Thoughtful men agree that she can no longer endure as she is. What changes must she undergo to make her possible to the present world? The answer to both questions seems to be the same. China has faced the past. She has worshiped the ancestors. This mental attitude, forbidding all change, has saved the nation from division, but now while she holds this attitude, modern civilization has no power over her. A change in national characteristics is prerequisite to her progress, even before foreign telegraphs and ma chinery. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unknown to many, increasing numbers of conservative evangelicals are denying basic tenets of classical Christian teaching about God, with departures occurring even among those of the Calvinistic persuasion. James E. Dolezal’s All That Is in God provides an exposition of the historic Christian position while engaging with these contemporary deviations. His convincing critique of the newer position he styles “theistic mutualism” is philosophically robust, systematically nuanced, and biblically based. It demonstrates the need to maintain the traditional viewpoint, particularly on divine simplicity, and spotlights the unfortunate implications for other important Christian doctrines—such as divine eternality and the Trinity—if it were to be abandoned. Arguing carefully and cogently that “all that is in God is God Himself,” the work is sure to stimulate debate on the issue in years to come.
