Book China 1957 July 1960

Download or read book China 1957 July 1960 written by and published by . This book was released on 1960 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This bibliography is a companion piece to the microfilm project of same title (on 28 reels) which contains the full text of the titles listed in the bibliography. The translations were performed by linguists under contract with the United States Joint Publications Research Service (JPRS), a federal agency established in 1957 to service the translation needs of various government research units. Materials to be translated are selected by Government scientists and researchers under contract. The majority of JPRS translations are in the social sciences. The focus is on economic, political and social developments in the communist world and in other foreign areas. Upon the initiative of the Social Science Research Council a group of sixty subscribing universities began to receive the JPRS translations on China in July-August 1960. The translations issued before this date were, however, not included in this or in any other subscription-distribution program. Since that material is of equal importance for studies on China, the present microfilm project of the JPRS reports included in this bibliography intends to fill this gap in the China field in providing these translations for the researcher."--Foreword

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the Samuel Johnson Prize An unprecedented, groundbreaking history of China's Great Famine that recasts the era of Mao Zedong and the history of the People's Republic of China. "Between 1958 and 1962, China descended into hell. Mao Zedong threw his country into a frenzy with the Great Leap Forward, an attempt to catch up to and overtake Britain in less than 15 years The experiment ended in the greatest catastrophe the country had ever known, destroying tens of millions of lives." So opens Frank Dikötter's riveting, magnificently detailed chronicle of an era in Chinese history much speculated about but never before fully documented because access to Communist Party archives has long been restricted to all but the most trusted historians. A new archive law has opened up thousands of central and provincial documents that "fundamentally change the way one can study the Maoist era." Dikötter makes clear, as nobody has before, that far from being the program that would lift the country among the world's superpowers and prove the power of Communism, as Mao imagined, the Great Leap Forward transformed the country in the other direction. It became the site not only of "one of the most deadly mass killings of human history,"--at least 45 million people were worked, starved, or beaten to death--but also of "the greatest demolition of real estate in human history," as up to one-third of all housing was turned into rubble). The experiment was a catastrophe for the natural world as well, as the land was savaged in the maniacal pursuit of steel and other industrial accomplishments. In a powerful mesghing of exhaustive research in Chinese archives and narrative drive, Dikötter for the first time links up what happened in the corridors of power-the vicious backstabbing and bullying tactics that took place among party leaders-with the everyday experiences of ordinary people, giving voice to the dead and disenfranchised. His magisterial account recasts the history of the People's Republic of China.

Book excerpt: This is a transnational history of the activist and intellectual network that connected the Black freedom struggle in the United States to liberation movements across the globe in the aftermath of World War II. John Munro charts the emergence of an anticolonial front within the postwar Black liberation movement comprising organisations such as the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the Council on African Affairs and the American Society for African Culture and leading figures such as W. E. B. Du Bois, Claudia Jones, Alphaeus Hunton, George Padmore, Richard Wright, Esther Cooper Jackson, Jack O'Dell and C. L. R. James. Drawing on a diverse array of personal papers, organisational records, novels, newspapers and scholarly literatures, the book follows the fortunes of this political formation, recasting the Cold War in light of decolonisation and racial capitalism and the postwar history of the United States in light of global developments.

It juxtaposes Zhou’s stance on issues which confront current bilateral relations — such as the “history issues” and the territorial dispute over the Senkaku (or Diaoyu) Islands — with the current Chinese foreign policy of President Xi Jinping.
