Download or read book Chemistry of Biological Processes an Introduction written by Marc Fontecave and published by Collège de France. This book was released on 2014-02-05 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life depends on the ability of living organisms to effectively harness the chemical potential of their environment, namely the sun, for energy, and a certain number of molecules which exist on the Earth’s surface, such as water, oxygen, carbon dioxide, nitrogen, etc. These molecules need to be activated if benefit is to be derived from them, which requires profound electronic modifications that only metal ions can provide. Truly extraordinary metalloenzymes with highly subtle mechanisms are responsible for this activation. Bioinorganic chemistry straddles the disciplines of chemistry and biology and is in full expansion today. This discipline was born of the recent realisation that life is not solely organic but also “mineral”, and that no life can exist without metals.
Download or read book Introduction l cotoxicologie Fondements et applications written by RAMADE François and published by Lavoisier. This book was released on 2007-03-15 with total page 651 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book The Dynamics of Living Systems written by Thomas Lecuit and published by Collège de France. This book was released on 2020-11-16 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can we explain the fundamental paradox of living matter, which combines stability and robustness of form with constant internal dynamics? It is not only the genetic information contained in every cell, but also numerous stochastic biomolecular processes that are at work in morphogenesis. In addition, the shaping of an organism is driven by mechanical forces that operate within and between cells, across tissues and organs. The dynamics of morphogenesis is a self-organized process that emerges from biological control and physical constraints at all scales. Its study is currently bringing together a fast-growing interdisciplinary community that observes, analyses and models living organisms.

Download or read book Anthropology of Nature written by Philippe Descola and published by Collège de France. This book was released on 2014-07-08 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It looks as though the anthropology of nature is an oxymoron of sorts, given that for the past few centuries, nature has been characterized in the West by humans’ absence, and humans, by their capacity to overcome what is natural in them. But nature does not exist as a sphere of autonomous realities for all peoples. By positing a universal distribution of humans and non-humans in two separate ontological fields, we are for one quite ill equipped to analyse all those systems of objectification of the world in which a formal distinction between nature and culture does not obtain. This type of distinction moreover appears to go against what the evolutionary and life sciences have taught us about the phyletic continuity of organisms. Our singularity in relation to all other existents is relative, as is our awareness of it.
Download or read book On the Origins of Global History written by Sanjay Subrahmanyam and published by Collège de France. This book was released on 2016-03-17 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How does one think of history on a world scale? Should one turn to the intellectuals of the past or the historians of the present? Universal history as it was practised from Antiquity started to change from the sixteenth century in varied contexts, from East Asia to Spanish America. Applying his extensive knowledge of archives across the world and his command of languages and historiographic traditions of Asia, Europe and the Americas, Sanjay Subrahmanyam considers the history of networks and exchanges of goods, myths and ideologies from a new perspective. He works outside traditional geopolitical frameworks based on the nation-state model, to present global history as a field defined and redefined by “connected histories”.
Download or read book Connected History written by Sanjay Subrahmanyam and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2022-01-04 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A collection of essays that span many regions and cultures, by an award-winning historian Sanjay Subrahmanyam is becoming well known for the same sort of reasons that attach to Fernand Braudel and Carlo Ginzburg, as the proponent of a new kind of history - in his case, not longue durée or micro-history, but 'connected history': connected cross-culturally, and spanning regions, subjects and archives that are conventionally treated alone. Not a research paradigm, he insists, it is more of an oppositionswissenschaft, a way of trying to constantly break the moulds of historical objects. The essays collected here, some quite polemical - as in the lead text on the notion of India-as-civilization, or another, assessing such a literary totem as V. S. Naipaul - illustrate the breadth of Subrahmanyam's concerns, as well as the quality of his writing. Connected History considers what, exactly, is an empire, the rise of 'the West' (less of a place than an idea or ideology, he insists), Churchill and the Great Man theory of history, the reception of world literature and the itinerary of subaltern studies, in addition to personal recollections of life and work in Delhi, Paris and Lisbon, and concluding remarks on the practice of early-modern history and the framing of historical enquiry.

Download or read book Atomic and Molecular Physics written by Claude Cohen-Tannoudji and published by Collège de France. This book was released on 2015-11-17 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When physicists began to explore the world of atoms more precisely, as they endeavoured to understand its structure and the laws governing its behaviour, they soon encountered serious difficulties. Our intuitive concepts, based on our daily experience of the macroscopic world around us, proved to be completely erroneous on the atomic scale; the atom was incomprehensible within the framework of classical physics. In order to uncover these new mysteries, after a great deal of trial and error, entirely new concepts therefore had to be elaborated: the concepts of quantum physics. What are the main stages that have led us to this modern understanding of the atom? What is the present state of atomic physics? How has it contributed to the development of our knowledge and where is it heading?
Download or read book Refocusing Central Asia written by Frantz Grenet and published by Collège de France. This book was released on 2016-03-17 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The notion of Central Asia emerged at a late stage, replacing that of “Tartary”, often associated with the Mongol Terror, in 1825 only. Two twentieth-century archaeological currents profoundly contributed to the revival of studies on this region: the French school led by the Délégation archéologique française en Afghanistan, and the Soviet school characterized by large multidisciplinary expeditions. The rediscovery of the region’s two main languages, Sogdian and Bactrian, has significantly furthered research on this cultural area encompassing Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Kirghizstan and Afghanistan.
