Book excerpt: Earned the Silver Medal for Best Bilingual Children's Book from MOM'S CHOICE AWARDS. MIDWEST BOOK REVIEWS says, A read-aloud treat for young people ages 2-8. An enchanting, poetic foray into a world of imagination in which children are taught timeless truths by bugs, animals, plants, and the sun. These fun-filled, character-building messages spark hope and joy in children, while helping them better understand how precious life is and the importance of friendships, showing courtesy, and sharing with others. The illustrations and poetry capture the heart of these simple lessons that are important to developing in a child a deep appreciation and respect for nature and each other. While being especially useful for non-Russian Americans in exposing young ones to a multicultural experience that has such a rich and imaginative tradition, A Great Time was published primarily for American families that adopt children from Ukraine/Russia.

Book Poems from Children s Island

Download or read book Poems from Children s Island written by Sasha Chernyĭ and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poetry. Bilingual Edition. Translated from the Russian by Kevin Kinsella. Illustrated by Jessica Seamans. Before Daniil Kharms and Nikolai Zabolotsky, there was Sasha Chernyi (1880-1932) with his brilliantly satirical poems, caustic wit, and verbal caricature. One of the best satirists of his generation. Chernyi wrote humorous poems that took aim at politicians, intellectuals, a bourgeois merchant class pandering to European sensibilities, and the backward lives of ordinary Russians at the start of the twentieth century. Chernyi was also a beloved children's poet, and the author of some twenty books for young Russian readers. Even Chernyi's writing for children contains his characteristic bite, and the little animals and gnomes that inhabit POEMS FROM CHILDREN'S ISLAND have much to say about how silly a place the world can be. This is the first English-language edition of Chernyi. "Not recommended for adults! as these rimes are far too clever, and besides adults don't like poetry"—Charles Bernstein.

Download or read book Russian Absurd written by Daniil Kharms and published by Northwestern University Press. This book was released on 2017-02-15 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A writer who defies categorization, Daniil Kharms has come to be regarded as an essential artist of the modernist avant-garde. His writing, which partakes of performance, narrative, poetry, and visual elements, was largely suppressed during his lifetime, which ended in a psychiatric ward where he starved to death during the siege of Leningrad. His work, which survived mostly in notebooks, can now be seen as one of the pillars of absurdist literature, most explicitly manifested in the 1920s and ’30s Soviet Union by the OBERIU group, which inherited the mantle of Russian futurism from such poets as Vladimir Mayakovsky and Velimir Khlebnikov. This selection of prose and poetry provides the most comprehensive portrait of the writer in English translation to date, revealing the arc of his career and including a particularly generous selection of his later work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soviet literature in general and Soviet children’s literature in particular have often been labeled by Western and post-Soviet Russian scholars and critics as propaganda. Below the surface, however, Soviet children’s literature and culture allowed its creators greater experimental and creative freedom than did the socialist realist culture for adults. This volume explores the importance of children’s culture, from literature to comics to theater to film, in the formation of Soviet social identity and in connection with broader Russian culture, history, and society.

Book The Penguin Book of Russian Poetry

Download or read book The Penguin Book of Russian Poetry written by Robert Chandler and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2015-02-26 with total page 541 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An enchanting collection of the very best of Russian poetry, edited by acclaimed translator Robert Chandler together with poets Boris Dralyuk and Irina Mashinski. In the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, poetry's pre-eminence in Russia was unchallenged, with Pushkin and his contemporaries ushering in the 'Golden Age' of Russian literature. Prose briefly gained the high ground in the second half of the nineteenth century, but poetry again became dominant in the 'Silver Age' (the early twentieth century), when belief in reason and progress yielded once more to a more magical view of the world. During the Soviet era, poetry became a dangerous, subversive activity; nevertheless, poets such as Osip Mandelstam and Anna Akhmatova continued to defy the censors. This anthology traces Russian poetry from its Golden Age to the modern era, including work by several great poets - Georgy Ivanov and Varlam Shalamov among them - in captivating modern translations by Robert Chandler and others. The volume also includes a general introduction, chronology and individual introductions to each poet. Robert Chandler is an acclaimed poet and translator. His many translations from Russian include works by Aleksandr Pushkin, Nikolay Leskov, Vasily Grossman and Andrey Platonov, while his anthologies of Russian Short Stories from Pushkin to Buida and Russian Magic Tales are both published in Penguin Classics. Irina Mashinski is a bilingual poet and co-founder of the StoSvet literary project. Her most recent collection is 2013's Ophelia i masterok [Ophelia and the Trowel]. Boris Dralyuk is a Lecturer in Russian at the University of St Andrews and translator of many books from Russian, including, most recently, Isaac Babel's Red Cavalry (2014).
