Book excerpt: Decades of research have demonstrated that the parent-child dyad and the environment of the familyâ€"which includes all primary caregiversâ€"are at the foundation of children's well- being and healthy development. From birth, children are learning and rely on parents and the other caregivers in their lives to protect and care for them. The impact of parents may never be greater than during the earliest years of life, when a child's brain is rapidly developing and when nearly all of her or his experiences are created and shaped by parents and the family environment. Parents help children build and refine their knowledge and skills, charting a trajectory for their health and well-being during childhood and beyond. The experience of parenting also impacts parents themselves. For instance, parenting can enrich and give focus to parents' lives; generate stress or calm; and create any number of emotions, including feelings of happiness, sadness, fulfillment, and anger. Parenting of young children today takes place in the context of significant ongoing developments. These include: a rapidly growing body of science on early childhood, increases in funding for programs and services for families, changing demographics of the U.S. population, and greater diversity of family structure. Additionally, parenting is increasingly being shaped by technology and increased access to information about parenting. Parenting Matters identifies parenting knowledge, attitudes, and practices associated with positive developmental outcomes in children ages 0-8; universal/preventive and targeted strategies used in a variety of settings that have been effective with parents of young children and that support the identified knowledge, attitudes, and practices; and barriers to and facilitators for parents' use of practices that lead to healthy child outcomes as well as their participation in effective programs and services. This report makes recommendations directed at an array of stakeholders, for promoting the wide-scale adoption of effective programs and services for parents and on areas that warrant further research to inform policy and practice. It is meant to serve as a roadmap for the future of parenting policy, research, and practice in the United States.

Book excerpt: Abstract: Studies have shown that children showing signs of behavior problems early in life are at considerable risk for continued behavioral disturbances throughout childhood (Winsler & Wallace, 2002). A significant tool in early identification and prevention is assessment of the child's behavior - often provided by parents, teachers, and observers. Assessments of child behavior benefit highly from multiple informants; however, the degree to which agreement is achieved among informants is important in order for them to be considered a significant tool. Mothers in 113 families completed questionnaires concerning their perceptions of their preschool aged child's behavior, and their 3-5-year-old child was observed while they worked on an activity together with their parents. The child's behavior during the activity was coded by trained observers. Children also reported on their perceptions of their psychological self-concepts. Furthermore, the children's preschool or kindergarten teachers were mailed questionnaires in order to gain an additional perspective on the child's behavior. The questionnaire and observation process was repeated again one year later and data collected from each phase of the study were used in my investigation. Results indicated greater agreement between all informants for more easily observable behaviors like anger and aggression, persistence, and activity level. Greater agreement was also found for boys than for girls, for more overt behaviors as well as internalizing behaviors and characteristics (e.g., timidity, anxiety). Results concerning the role of child age and day care experience in informant agreement were less clear.

Book Temperament and Children

Download or read book Temperament and Children written by Roy P. Martin and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-12-03 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book presents an empirical model of commonly occurring individual differences in children that is derived from a large-scale research effort assessing parental and teacher perceptions of children in middle childhood. It examines eight characteristic behavioral traits, most of which have been widely shown to be present in infants, toddlers, and preschool-aged children. The book demonstrates the importance of considering profiles of these relatively stable individual differences for the educational, social, and emotional life of the child. It describes characteristic behaviors of children within each profile – emphasizing the assets and liabilities of each – and how they are perceived by their parents, teachers, and peers. Chapters explore issues related to the most developmentally effective management of children exhibiting each profile type. In addition, the book addresses a critical need in child development, parenting, and teaching to understand the wide range of individual differences observed every day in school-aged children. Not only does this volume underscore that commonly occurring differences can be understood as being normal and do not suggest a pathology, it also discusses implications of the model in diagnosing pathology. The book describes what is known about the stability of temperament behaviors and profiles across the lifespan as well as the origins of these behaviors. Key topics addressed include: Nurturing development of well-adjusted children. Causes of individual differences in children’s behavior. Temperamental tendencies and profiles of children. Diagnosing psychopathology in children. This book is a must-have resource for researchers, professors, and graduate students as well as clinicians and related professionals in developmental, clinical child and school psychology, social work, public health, pediatrics, family studies, educational psychology and counseling, and all other interrelated disciplines.

Book Teacher Perceptions of Parental Incarceration and Its Influence on Children s Academic Success

Download or read book Teacher Perceptions of Parental Incarceration and Its Influence on Children s Academic Success written by Amber L. Hooper and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A child’s educational fulfillment is often supported by the stability of parents being present in a child’s life. Children’s academic learning can be reinforced by parents taking an active role in promoting their child’s education. When a parent is incarcerated, the child can be left without a support person for their academic success. This may lead to behavior problems in school and the increased chance at academic failure and grade retention. The separation of a parent in a child’s early education years may have effects that last into adulthood and set the stage for intergenerational incarceration. This study examined teachers’ perceptions of children’s academic experiences after parental incarceration by surveying teachers in early education grades (preschool through third grade) and interviewing one teacher regarding her experiences teaching students with an incarcerated parent. This study found that teachers with students who have an incarcerated parent felt that children need support from their teacher when it came to children expressing their feelings, and teachers’ opinions differed on whether continued communication with the incarcerated parent on educational matters was beneficial. Children with incarcerated parents need emotional support from their teacher; therefore, teachers need training on how best to support students navigating parental incarceration.

Book The Perfect Angel Hypothesis

Download or read book The Perfect Angel Hypothesis written by Sonya Shaniece Myers and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study explored the effects of parental false perceptions of their children's temperament on their subsequent school behavior problems. Participants were parents and teachers of 97 kindergarten children in an urban southern community. Both parents and teachers completed questionnaires on children's temperament, while teachers reported on children's school behaviors. Results indicate that both parent and teacher report of child temperament is related to school behavior problems, however, when parental ratings are more favorable than teacher ratings, this favorability is related to more internalizing and externalizing behaviors in school. In addition, parents rated their children higher on negative emotions, while parents and teachers rated similarly on effortful control. Furthermore, parent ratings of children's negative emotions were predictive of behavior problems above and beyond teacher's report. Findings highlight the relation of parental perceptions to children2s school behavior problems and the utility of parent-teacher collaboration in improving children's school adjustment.
