Download or read book The Bright Survivor written by Sharon Shih and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2024-01-12 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bright Survivor is a memoir offered in a unique second-person, mother-to-son approach. The mother provides a detailed story about how her son grew up in a small family of the first-generation immigrants in Canada. Her son was born in Toronto when she and her husband were in their forties, finishing school and starting a new career. When they immigrated to Canada after his birth, the immigration officer asked them to “make sure that he gets all that a Canadian deserves.” It took twenty years. The family of three explored and overcame several learning curves. For many years, being with his parents was rare for the boy because his parents always worked full-time. He grew up with Chinese nannies, home cares, after-school programs, and extra-curricular lessons. For summer and winter breaks, he was busy with camps and sometimes family trips. In his primary school years, the boy was fine but had little patience in group settings and split-grade classes. His parents pursued a better fit for his education. He eventually felt in the right place with the International Baccalaureate program at high school and went to a co-op program for his college education to become an engineer. His mother wondered sometimes if the home she had provided could have been more relaxing and better appreciated. Her generation never had the time or resources. Her version of his childhood is marked by persistent effort in a diverse world, always with an open mind and often with love and happiness.

This book was released on 2012-06-16 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intelligent environments (IE) play an increasingly important role in many areas of our lives, including education, healthcare and the domestic environment. The term refers to physical spaces incorporating pervasive computing technology used to achieve specific goals for the user, the environment or both. This book presents the proceedings of the workshops of the 8th International Conference on Intelligent Environments (IE ‘12), held in Guanajuato, Mexico, in June 2012. The workshops which make up the conference range from regular lectures to practical sessions. They provide a forum for scientists, researchers and engineers from both industry and academia to engage in discussions on newly emerging or rapidly evolving topics in the field. Topics covered in the workshops include intelligent environments supporting healthcare and well-being; artificial intelligence techniques for ambient intelligence; large-scale intelligent environments; intelligent domestic robots; intelligent environment technology in education; multimodal interfaces applied in skills transfer, healthcare and rehabilitation; the reliability of intelligent environments and improving industrial automation using intelligent environments. IE can enrich user experience, better manage the environment's resources, and increase user awareness of that environment. This book will be of interest to all those whose work involves the application of intelligent environments.
