Book excerpt: Decades of research have demonstrated that the parent-child dyad and the environment of the familyâ€"which includes all primary caregiversâ€"are at the foundation of children's well- being and healthy development. From birth, children are learning and rely on parents and the other caregivers in their lives to protect and care for them. The impact of parents may never be greater than during the earliest years of life, when a child's brain is rapidly developing and when nearly all of her or his experiences are created and shaped by parents and the family environment. Parents help children build and refine their knowledge and skills, charting a trajectory for their health and well-being during childhood and beyond. The experience of parenting also impacts parents themselves. For instance, parenting can enrich and give focus to parents' lives; generate stress or calm; and create any number of emotions, including feelings of happiness, sadness, fulfillment, and anger. Parenting of young children today takes place in the context of significant ongoing developments. These include: a rapidly growing body of science on early childhood, increases in funding for programs and services for families, changing demographics of the U.S. population, and greater diversity of family structure. Additionally, parenting is increasingly being shaped by technology and increased access to information about parenting. Parenting Matters identifies parenting knowledge, attitudes, and practices associated with positive developmental outcomes in children ages 0-8; universal/preventive and targeted strategies used in a variety of settings that have been effective with parents of young children and that support the identified knowledge, attitudes, and practices; and barriers to and facilitators for parents' use of practices that lead to healthy child outcomes as well as their participation in effective programs and services. This report makes recommendations directed at an array of stakeholders, for promoting the wide-scale adoption of effective programs and services for parents and on areas that warrant further research to inform policy and practice. It is meant to serve as a roadmap for the future of parenting policy, research, and practice in the United States.

Book excerpt: To study the question "What are parents' and teachers' attitudes toward parent involvement?" nine parents and seven teachers from one school were interviewed for a qualitative study. A wide variety of philosophies of parent involvement were found. The parents, as a whole, considered themselves important influences in their children's education and wanted more communication from the school. The teachers had varying needs for parent involvement. While all of the teachers wanted the support from the parents at home, some wanted parents involved in the classroom. One implication of this study is that in order to have a positive relationship with parents, educators need to have an understanding of the wide spectrum of possibilities for and definitions of parent involvement.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to research elementary school parents to gain a better understanding of their beliefs and attitudes about their children's academic learning. The research was conducted in a small community in the Midwest. The project took place in the fall of 2005, at the elementary school, in a district that educates approximately 700 students Pre-K - 12. One hundred and fifty families had children attending the elementary school. All parents who attended parent-teacher conferences, both mothers and fathers, were asked to complete the survey. The attendance rate at parent-teacher conferences was eighty-five percent. Data were collected through a survey created by the researcher, which included five research questions. With more research on the reasons behind the barriers to parents' involvement, parents and teachers can work together to analyze areas for improvement. Therefore, it was important to know parents' attitudes and beliefs about their role in their children's academic achievement. The overall goal was to provide a framework for the school to build on their parent involvement program, both at home and at school, which in turn would help increase student achievement. Results of the study indicated that there were no external barriers that prevented parents from participating in their children's education. The main limiting factors related to parents' work schedules and hectic lifestyles. Overall, it was found that most parents strongly valued involvement in their child's learning. However, when females were compared to males, there were several items that indicated a significant difference between the two when analyzing their involvement at home and at school. Prior school experiences for parents had no bearing on their level of involvement in their child's education, and their level of involvement did not change based on the number of children in the home.

Book excerpt: Parent involvement in their childrens education and school life was studied in England through a telephone survey of 2,109 households. Around 1 in 3 parents (29%) felt very involved in their childs school life, and primary school parents were more likely to feel this way than secondary school parents. Mothers were more likely to say that they were very involved than were fathers. Around 72% of all parents agreed that they wanted more involvement, and a third definitely agreed. Among the barriers to involvement, parents cited the competing demands in their lives such as work commitments, demands of other children, childcare difficulties, and lack of time generally. Almost all parents were happy with the schools attitude toward them, with a large majority finding the school welcoming (94%) and willing to involve them (84%). Parents particularly value face-to-face contact with teachers, but a significant minority thought that they would be labeled trouble makers if they talked too much. Parents were generally happy with the quality of written communications coming from schools, although a significant minority (27%) thought that the general information was spoiled by jargon. Many parents were not aware of the labels given to recent educational initiatives, and 35% did not recognize the term Home School Agreement, even though all had been invited to sign one. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to explore the manner in which parents' attitudes toward science learning influences their children's attitudes and the effect of ethnicity on attitudes toward science learning. The results of this study show that parental attitudes toward science learning were influenced by both parents' early life experiences and their own early science learning experiences in school. Also in this study, even though the parents' attitudes, as seen across ethnicities, were found to be positive toward science learning, their attitudes failed to be transformed into serious actions taken to influence their children's attitudes toward science learning. In the absence of real parental involvement, parents' attitudes, displayed as beliefs and intentions, have been found to be of limited importance in influencing either student attitudes or attainments. Cultural, ethnic and social effects were found difficult to measure. In sum, this study concluded that there are three major factors that could heavily influence student academic success in science across cultures and ethnicities: (a) parental attitudes toward science education (b) parental involvement in science education and (c) parents' social stratification. Parents' subculture and social construction block or promote many opportunities for individual performance. (Contains 2 tables and 2 figures.).
