Download or read book Cartographies of Empowerment written by Vimala Ramachandran and published by Zubaan. This book was released on 2014-03-11 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mahila Samakhya is as much a story of a government programme for women's education and empowerment as it is of the celebration of the struggles of poor women for gender just rights. Spread across eight states and more than 150 districts in India, the Mahila Samakhya programme grew out of a unique partnership between the women's movement and the government. In this collection of essays, concerned scholars from different parts of India chart Mahila Samakhya's fascinating journey of setting up poor women's collectives and women's agency in establishing an equal space and voice in the public domain - a radical departure from the more common approaches of organising women around economic concerns. The writers explore broad gender issues grounded within the field experience of Mahila Samakhya, providing insights into the workings of the programme at different levels, its conceptual challenges, strategic choices, the opportunities and pitfalls of partnership with government and above all the willingness of poor women to come together voluntarily to address and overcome gender barriers.

Book Impact of Maternal and Child Health Private Expenditure on Poverty and Inequity Review of the Literature on the Extent and Mechanisms by which

Download or read book Impact of Maternal and Child Health Private Expenditure on Poverty and Inequity Review of the Literature on the Extent and Mechanisms by which written by Asian Development Bank and published by Asian Development Bank. This book was released on 2012-12-01 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reducing the burden of poor maternal, neonatal, and child health ill-health requires improvements in both the supply and use of effective maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH) services. The financial costs of treatment are known globally to be a major barrier to accessing essential care, potentially imposing considerable burdens on households. To find out what was known about the scale and impact on families of out-of-pocket expenditures in accessing MNCH care in the Asia-Pacific region, this study undertook a systematic review of the global and regional evidence. The findings show that despite significant progress in improving coverage in the region, millions of families in the region continue to face financial barriers to accessing essential MNCH care, and experience significant financial hardships as a result of out-of-pocket payments. It points to areas where the research needs to be improved both methodologically and in terms of geographical coverage, and where better policies might make a difference.

Book Faces of Inequality

Download or read book Faces of Inequality written by Pradeep Baisakh and published by Notion Press. This book was released on 2022-01-06 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amid the talks of a five trillion dollar Indian economy, there is still an India where people struggle to arrange two square meals a day. Many strive hard for basic needs of food, health and education. Often unheard and ignored, these voiceless people mostly don’t matter to the mainstream media. This book, through various ground reports over a decade and a half, captures the stories of the most marginalised people of society. All the reports should serve as a warning bell till the time another man dies of starvation, an HIV positive woman is thrown out of her house, a girl is raped in brick kilns of Andhra Pradesh or a poor child is forced to work in the cotton fields of Gujarat. These are not mere real-life stories but a chronicle of policy and governance failures. The reports analyse the systemic causes of such failures. But all is not lost. Still, there are rays of hope amid the bleak picture. Many positive stories show us how, with the right policy interventions and community effort, the lives and livelihoods of the marginalised can flourish. Note: This book is a republication of author's selected articles published earlier in different newspapers, portals and journals. Author's announcement: 25% of the earnings incurred to the author from the sale of this book will be donated for social causes.
