Book excerpt: Excerpt from Childhood in Literature and Art: With Some Observations on Literature for Children; A Study Nevertheless, there has been, since the day of Wordsworth, such a succession of childish figures in prose and verse that we are jus tified in believing childhood to have been discovered at the close of the last century. The child has now become so common that we scarcely consider how absent he is from the earlier literature. Men and women are there, lovers, maidens, and youth, but these are all with us still. The child has been added to the dramatis personoe of modern literature. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book American Childhood written by Anne Scott MacLeod and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 1995-10-01 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this collection of fourteen essays, Anne Scott MacLeod locates and describes shifts in the American concept of childhood as those changes are suggested in nearly two centuries of children's stories. Most of the essays concern domestic novels for children or adolescents--stories set more or less in the time of their publication. Some essays also draw creatively on childhood memoirs, travel writings that contain foreigners' observations of American children, and other studies of children's literature. The topics on which MacLeod writes range from the current politicized marketplace for children's books, to the reestablishment (and reconfiguration) of the family in recent children's fiction, to the ways that literature challenges or enforces the idealization of children. MacLeod sometimes considers a single author's canon, as when she discusses the feminism of the Nancy Drew mystery series or the Orwellian vision of Robert Cormier. At other times, she looks at a variety of works within a particular period, for example, Jacksonian America, the post-World War II decade, or the 1970s. MacLeod also examines books that were once immensely popular but currently have no appreciable readership--the Horatio Alger stories, for example--and finds fresh, intriguing ways to view the work of such well-known writers as Louisa May Alcott, Beverly Cleary, and Paul Zindel.

Book A Reference Guide for English Studies

Download or read book A Reference Guide for English Studies written by Michael J. Marcuse and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1990-01-01 with total page 872 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This ambitious undertaking is designed to acquaint students, teachers, and researchers with reference sources in any branch of English studies, which Marcuse defines as "all those subjects and lines of critical and scholarly inquiry presently pursued by members of university departments of English language and literature.'' Within each of 24 major sections, Marcuse lists and annotates bibliographies, guides, reviews of research, encyclopedias, dictionaries, journals, and reference histories. The annotations and various indexes are models of clarity and usefulness, and cross references are liberally supplied where appropriate. Although cost-conscious librarians will probably consider the several other excellent literary bibliographies in print, such as James L. Harner's Literary Research Guide (Modern Language Assn. of America, 1989), larger academic libraries will want Marcuse's volume.-- Jack Bales, Mary Washington Coll. Book Audacious Kids

Download or read book Audacious Kids written by Jerry Griswold and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2014-11-01 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The definitive book-length study of the great classics of American children’s literature, now updated for a new century. Outstanding Book of the Year Award, Children’s Literature Association Often called the Golden Age of Children’s Books, the years stretching from the Civil War to World War I were a remarkable epoch in juvenile literature, an era when the best authors on both sides of the Atlantic wrote some of their finest work primarily for children. In Audacious Kids, Jerry Griswold provides a groundbreaking and lucid study of twelve of these classic American children’s tales, including such time-honored stories as Little Women, Tom Sawyer, The Secret Garden, and The Wizard of Oz. Griswold’s most remarkable insight is that, fundamentally, these twelve books all tell essentially the same story: a child is orphaned, makes a journey, is adopted and harassed by adults, and eventually triumphs over them and comes into his or her own. Griswold, a leading figure in the study of children’s literature, also reveals that these tales emphasize motifs that are distinctly American, such as positive thinking, concern with health, and the concealment of sex and violence, and he shows how these secular parables replaced religion with psychology and preached gospels of emotional self-control and optimism. In this revised edition, which is aimed at students, scholars, and general readers, Griswold has updated the text throughout and added a new preface, introduction, and select bibliography.

Book Childhood and Character

Download or read book Childhood and Character written by Hugh Hartshorne and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Childhood and Character: An Introduction to the Study of the Religious Life of Children This book is an effort to introduce teachers to the study of childhood religion at first hand. Its aim is increase not so much of information as of insight, by thoughtful observation and control of children. It is in no sense a substitute for boys and girls as objects of study, and it should be used as a way of learning rather than as something to be learned - a guide to the real facts, which are living children, not books. For some time there has been a widely felt need for a book that will unite the study of children with the study of society. The social point of view in religion, in psychology, in attitude toward youth, has not so far given birth to a text for the guidance of teachers. Most current text-books are too abstract, too general, too little interested in problems of religious development, too individualistic in their point of view, or too crowded with facts of lesser importance. They leave the student with an idea of the dissected body and mind of "the child," but without a notion of children living in the fellowship of a social whole which includes them as well as adults. Young and old together constitute society. The youthful ingredient of society in the religious aspect of its development is the subject of this volume. The chapters are arranged in the order in which it is felt it will be most useful to read them. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Literary Cultures and Twentieth Century Childhoods

Download or read book Literary Cultures and Twentieth Century Childhoods written by Rachel Conrad and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-09-12 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays offers innovative methodological and disciplinary approaches to the intersection of Anglophone literary cultures with children and childhoods across the twentieth century. In two acts of re-centering, the volume focuses both on the multiplicity of childhoods and literary cultures and on child agency. Looking at classic texts for young audiences and at less widely-read and unpublished material (across genres including poetry, fiction, historical fiction or biography, picturebooks, and children’s television), essays foreground the representation of child voices and subjectivities within texts, explore challenges to received notions of childhood, and emphasize the role of child-oriented texts in larger cultural and political projects. Chapters frame themes of spectacle, self, and specularity across the twentieth-century; question tropes of childhood; explore identity and displacement in narrating history and culture; and elevate children as makers of literary culture. A major intent of the volume is to approach literary culture not just as produced by adults for consumption by children but also as co-created by young people through their actions as speakers, artists, readers, and writers.
