Book Childhood Family Factors that Influenced the Enrollment of College Students with Learning Disabilities

Download or read book Childhood Family Factors that Influenced the Enrollment of College Students with Learning Disabilities written by Abigail Kirk and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to use qualitative measures to investigate the childhood family factors that influenced the enrollment of college students with learning disabilities. Six participants were interviewed, all of whom were registered through the University Accessibility Center at a four-year university and were served at some point during their school years for a learning disability. Interviews were held in a confidential location and lasted approximately thirty minutes. The interview protocol was constructed in a way that allowed participants to reflect on their experiences and tell their story in their own manner. Planned prompts were included to solicit more information as needed. The interviews were digitally recorded using an Ipod recorder and transcribed using NVivo 8 software. Investigators used thematic analysis to identify themes or patterns in the data, analyzed the themes, and reported the results based on their interpretation of the themes. In this approach, the data drove the interpretation rather than attempting to fit the data into the investigators' existing beliefs or interests. Four major themes emerged from the data analysis. Two themes centered on family factors that influenced college enrollment. These themes included parent support during school years and family involvement with college enrollment. Participants described the supportive relationship they had with their parents and the underlying feelings of support that always existed in their homes. They also reported their family's tradition of college attendance and parent expectations to attend college as significant factors in their own college enrollment. The other two themes relate to participants' feelings and beliefs about their disabilities. These themes include the impact of the disability on the individuals' sense of self-worth and personal strengths that contributed to success. Participants reported experiencing a lack of understanding about their disability. They recalled comparing themselves to their peers and not knowing how to explain their learning challenges to others. Despite their frustrations, participants made personal contributions to their own success. These contributions included the use of coping strategies and a determination to succeed. The individuals' use of coping strategies created an opportunity to experience success in the school setting, thereby increasing their motivation to continue their education after high school.

Download or read book Success for College Students with Learning Disabilities written by Susan A. Vogel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: JANET W. LERNER This timely volume explores issues pertinent to the emerging subject of college education for adults with learning disabilities. The inspiration for the book was a conference held at Barat College in Lake Forest Illinois on April 7, 1990, entitled College Students with Learning Disabilities: Reviewing the '80s and Planning for the '90s. The occasion was the celebration of the tenth anniversary of Barat College's program for college students with learning disabilities. Papers presented at this con ference, plus several additional invited chapters, and those of the co editors are included in this much needed publication. Only a few years ago, college was out of the question for most adults with learning disabilities. It is heartening to note that this situation has changed substantially over the last 15 or so years, with great strides in opportunities for adults with learning disabilities to acquire a college level education. From a slow beginning with programs such as the one at Barat College, there are today programs and support services in a variety of settings at a growing number of colleges and universities. Many indi viduals with learning disabilities can look forward to experiencing college and better preparing themselves for the future. The collection of papers in this book offers a comprehensive review of this exciting and challenging field.

Book Finding Voice

Download or read book Finding Voice written by Lynn Abrahams and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The transition to college affects not only students but also the entire family system. Parents sometimes become quite involved with a student's college education, a phenomenon that is beginning to get significant attention in the student development and higher education literature (Wartman & Savage, 2008). When students who have documented learning disabilities enroll in college, the concerns of family members can be even greater (Brinkerhoff, 2002). The purpose of this study was to investigate identity development in college students who have language-based learning disabilities. This study utilized the method of multiple case study design (six cases). Each case involved a student attending the Program for the Advancement of Learning (PAL) at Curry College in Milton, Massachusetts, and a family member of the student's choice. Eighteen interviews were conducted - two with each student and one with each family member. The study also included four home visits with family members. Voice-centered method (Gilligan, 2003) of analysis was used and "I-Poems," constructed from each student interview, were shared with students in the final interview. Results from this study support modifications to both Tanner's (2006, 2010) and Baxter Magolda's (2001, 2004, 2007, 2010) models of identity development. Findings from this study have implications both for services offered to students with learning differences and for the approach colleges take in responding to their family members. - Abstract

This book was released on 2005 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to understand factors influencing the successful participation of adults with learning disabilities in higher education. Data were collected through a series of three semi-structured interviews from a sample of ten students presenting verified learning disabilities and attending a minority-serving institution. The key emerging themes and patterns were identified from all thirty transcript analyses. The findings, placed in the context of previous research into college success for students with learning disabilities, enabled recognition of a success model with five overarching themes: A.A higher education institution committed to access and retention for disadvantaged students, reflected in a mission statement that included outreach to students from disadvantaged backgrounds, B. The availability of student support services on campus, C.A social safety net to compensate for low income (specifically, the state vocational rehabilitation agency), D. The support and advocacy of family and teachers, and E.A core of character strengths (specifically, persistence, optimism, and gratitude). Implications and recommendations for future research were discussed.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this qualitative study was to investigate and describe parenting practices that parents believe were effective in helping prepare their children with LD for college enrollment. Participants were chosen from among the parents of students interviewed by Cook (2010). Six parents (three couples) volunteered to be interviewed by phone. Interviews were recorded, transcribed, and thematically analyzed using hermeneutic phenomenological methodology. Under the category of Parent Practices, themes emerged in the areas of early identification, self-advocacy training, and home accommodations, and under the category of Family Factors, themes emerged in the areas reading, expectation, and normalization. Findings are discussed concerning the study's implications to both parents and educators.

Book Factors Contributing to Learning Disabled Students College Success student and Parent Perceptions

Download or read book Factors Contributing to Learning Disabled Students College Success student and Parent Perceptions written by Anita M. Zuber and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study described the perceptions of learning disabled (LD) students with regard to the factors that lead to their current success in college. The 5 participants ages 19 to 34, are enrolled as full-time students at a public university in Pennsylvania. The study analyzed the responses of the students to an open-ended survey and a semi-structured interview. Additionally, a parent (or spouse) of each participant completed a survey and was interviewed. The student's confidential file was examined for documentation regarding their learning disability and support services. The study was guided by 4 research questions that examined the critical home experiences, school experiences, student's self-knowledge and current actions, and views regarding critical school initiatives. The results indicated that the 5 participants recognized the importance of learning to self-advocate by explaining their disability and requesting support from their professors. The students also acknowledged the value of the supports available through the Office of Services for Students with Disabilities. The Director and staff of the university provided direct training in self-knowledge and self-awareness along with making available tutors, alternate testing sites, and academic coaches. Also deemed effective were the high school supports such as challenging curriculum, classmates who were academically-oriented, participation in the development of the I.E.P. and attendance in the meetings, and supportive teachers who provided encouragement and risk-taking opportunities. Valuable home experiences included: communication and positive encouragement from family, opportunities for participation in extra-curricular activities, and community service activities. The results also suggested a number of initiatives for schools to implement in order to improve student transitions to postsecondary education.
