This report discusses the Commission’s findings and presents both a comprehensive national strategy for fundamental reform and recommendations specific to populations in need of special attention, including children currently known to child protective services agencies and at high risk for fatality, American Indian/Alaska Native children, and African American children. The report includes recommendations for actions by the executive branch, Congress, and states and counties that the Commission believes will be most effective in ending these tragic deaths, today and into the future. Legislators and policymakers at the State and Federal-level, plus advocates, researchers, and academics may be interested in these findings. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the prevention of child abuse and neglect deaths in the U.S. In 2013 1,520 children died from maltreatment. This book defines child maltreatment fatalities (CMFs) and discusses the prevalence of deaths in the U.S. over the last several decades. It addresses the known risk factors for maltreatment deaths including child, parent, the parent-child relationship, and household risk factors. The main focus of the book addresses the responses and interventions that have been put in place in order to prevent CMFs: the child welfare profession, child death review teams, safe haven laws, criminal justice responses, public education, and new, federal efforts in the U.S. to reduce CMFs in the U.S. The book finishes by making recommendations for researchers, practitioners, and decision-makers about how to prevent fatal maltreatment among children in the U.S.

Book A Practical Guide to the Evaluation of Child Physical Abuse and Neglect

Download or read book A Practical Guide to the Evaluation of Child Physical Abuse and Neglect written by Angelo P. Giardino and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-06-09 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As we near the 50th anniversary of the landmark article by C. Henry Kempe and his colleagues entitled “The Battered Child Syndrome”, which ushered in the modern era of professional attention by pediatricians and other child health professionals, we have reason for both celebration and concern. We can take heart that over the recent ve decades, a great deal of professional attention focused on the problem of child abuse and neglect. In every state of the country, there are mandatory repo- ing laws that require nurses, physicians, and social workers to report suspicions of maltreatment to the appropriate authorities for investigation. The act of repo- ing provides legal immunity to the reporter except when performed in bad faith. Progress in understanding the factors that place children at risk for harm from ph- ical abuse and neglect now permits prevention and intervention. The peer-reviewed literature dealing with child abuse and neglect has proliferated with high quality work being done and reported on the many dimensions related to the epidemi- ogy, mechanism, treatment, and prognosis of child maltreatment. Efforts are being directed toward developing an evidence-based approach to the prevention of child abuse and neglect. These are some of the positives. However, negatives exist and remain reasons for concern. Despite a tremendous amount of attention to the pr- lem of maltreatment, there are at least 3 million reports of suspected child abuse and neglect made annually, with nearly 1 million cases being substantiated.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2006, New York City (NYC) established a multi-disciplinary Child Fatality Review Team to examine unnatural deaths in children ages one through 12 and to identify strategies for prevention. Past reports have described the predominant causes of fatal child injury in NYC incl. traffic crashes, fire and burns, and unintentional injuries in the home. This 4th report analyzes individual and neighborhood disparities in fatal childhood injuries. These findings show that fatal injuries occur disproportionately among younger children, boys, black non-Hispanic children, and children in the City¿s most impoverished neighborhoods. This report identifies social, environmental, and regulatory measures that could make NYC an even safer place for children. Illus.
