Book Chicago Literary Papyri Classic Reprint

Download or read book Chicago Literary Papyri Classic Reprint written by Edgar J. Goodspeed and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-03 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chicago Literary Papyri Not all of the following texts, however, are republications. No. I, a fragment of the oration of Isocrates To Nicocles, has not previously been published or described. With the exception of the third, the Ayer Papyrus, which belongs to the Field Museum, the papyri are in the collection of the editor. The Ayer Papyrus was purchased in Cairo by Mr. Ed. E. Ayer, of Chicago, about 1895. It afterward lay for a year in the Gizeh Museum, and was then brought by Mr. Ayer to Chicago and presented to the Field Museum, where it now lies. The papyri belonging to the writer fall in two groups. Nos. I, IV, V, and VII formed part of a considerable purchase of papyri made through friends in Egypt in 1897. There is good reason for believing that all these came from Kom Ushim, the ancient Karenis, in the Fayum. Book The Oxyrhynchus Papyri Vol 3

Download or read book The Oxyrhynchus Papyri Vol 3 written by Bernard P. Grenfell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-17 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Oxyrhynchus Papyri, Vol. 3: Edited With Translations and Notes IN accordance with the chronological arrangement adopted by us in the publication of the Oxyrhynchus Papyri, the present volume is devoted to second century texts, with the exception of the theo logical and some of the classical papyri. The selection of documents here published in full or described probably represents less than half the second century material discovered in 1897, but it is our intention in future volumes to deal with successive centuries up to the sixth, and then to return to the older papyri temporarily passed over; In the spring of this year excavations at Oxyrhynchus were resumed, and another large find of papyri was made, including a certain number of the late Ptolemaic period. These, together with a selection of the more important literary texts from the new find, will be published in Part IV, which we hope to issue within a year. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Classical Fragments: And Other Greek and Latin Papyri IN the following pages uncial texts are printed as they were written, except that words are separated from each other. As regards non-literary texts, we have ventured upon an extension of the method adopted by the Berlin editors. Not only have accents, breathings, and punctuation been added, but the resolutions of szgla and abbreviations have been introduced into the text, the words or letters supplied being included within round brackets. Only in those cases where amounts have been written out both in words and signs, the latter are retained in the text: elsewhere they are relegated to footnotes. Iota adscript is repro duced wherever it was actually written; otherwise iota subscript is printed. The originals have also been followed in the dots over letters, lines over figures, and other lection signs which from time to time occur. Lacunae are indicated by square brackets U. Dots placed within them represent the approximate number of letters lost. Dots outside the brackets indicate mutilated or otherwise illegible letters. Whenever enough of a partially obliterated letter remains to afford at any rate negative evidence, the dot has as a rule been placed in this position. Letters with dots underneath them are to be considered uncertain. Those about which, though partially lost, there was no doubt, have not been distinguished by dots. Faults of orthography are corrected in the footnotes; but variations which could cause no difficulty have not always been noticed. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Oxyrhynchus Papyri, Vol. 6: Edited With Translations and Notes OF the papyri included in this volume, the two long classical texts containing the Hypszfy/e of Euripides (852) and the new commentary on Thucydides II (853) formed part of the large hnd of literary mss. Which was made on Jan. 13, 1906, in the circumstances described in the Times of May 24, 1906, and the Report of the Egypt Exploration Fzma', 1905 - 6, p. 10. The other literary papyri were chiefly discovered during the same season, but some were found in 1897 or 1902. The non-literary documents, which largely belong to the third and fourth centuries, come, with a few exceptions, from the finds of 1897. In editing the new classical texts we have for the first time been without the support of the late Professor F. Blass, to whom our previous publications have owed so much but for 852 and 853 we have been fortunate in obtaining the generous aid of Professors U. Von wilamowitz-mo'llendorff and J. B. Bury, who have very materially furthered the reconstruction of those texts, while Mr. Gilbert Murray has also contributed many most valuable suggestions and criticisms upon 852. To these three scholars in particular, and to some others whose occasional assistance is acknowledged in connexion. With the individual papyri, we here offer our sincerest thanks. Lastly, we would express our obligations to the accomplished Proof-reader of the University press, whose care, in this book as in its predecessors, has removed many small blemishes from our pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Oxyrhynchus Papyri, Vol. 5 In editing the two most important classical texts, the Pindar (841) and the new historian (842) we have enjoyed for the last time the very great privilege of collaborating with Professor F. Blass, whose tragically sudden death occurred shortly after he had completed the revision of the earlier proofs of those two texts, to the reconstruction of which he had so largely contributed. It is impossible for us adequately to acknowledge the debt which our publications of classical texts during the last eleven years owe to the generous and unstinted assistance of that illustrious scholar, whose brilliance of imagination and depth of learning were never more admirably displayed than in the congenial occupation of restoring, elucidating, and identifying literary papyri. His loss is indeed to us irreparable, and will be felt most keenly when we come to deal with the immense number of fragments from the Greek lyric poets found during the last two seasons, since in that department no less than in that of the Attic orators his pre eminence was conspicuous. Book Narrative Literature from the Tebtunis Temple Library

Download or read book Narrative Literature from the Tebtunis Temple Library written by Kim Ryholt and published by Museum Tusculanum Press. This book was released on 2012 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents ten narrative texts written in the demotic script and preserved in papyri from the Tebtunis temple library (1st/2nd century AD). Eight of the texts are historical narratives which focus on the first millennium BC. Four concern prince Inaros, who rebelled against the Assyrian domination of Egypt in the 7th century, and his clan. One is about Inaros himself, while the other three take place after his death. Two other narratives mention Necho I and II of the Saite Period. The story about Necho II is particularly noteworthy, since it refers to the king as Nechepsos and, for the first time, provides us with the identity behind this name. Nechepsos is well supported as a sage king in Greek literary tradition, above all, in relation to astrology. Of the two final historical narratives, one belongs to the cycle of stories about the Heliopolitan priesthood and the other concerns the Persian occupation of Egypt in the 5th or 4th century. The volume further includes a prophecy
