He guarded his town with an eagle eye…but even Sheriff Cheyenne Bodine couldn’t save himself from the outrageous Shotgun Ridge matchmakers. Except…when she told Cheyenne that the babies she carried were his orphaned kin, she found herself under house arrest. The bail? Book Leaving Everything Behind

Download or read book Leaving Everything Behind written by Bertha Little Coyote and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bertha Little Coyote is a pistol. She is predictably outspoken and courageous, and her opinions are, to many people's chagrin, piercingly correct in most situations. In this memoir and the accompanying compact disc, she shows herself also as a deeply tender-hearted, expressive musician who is fiercely committed to people -- especially Cheyenne people. She has triumphed over eighty-four years of a difficult life, and has full hopes for an exciting spiritual existence after she "leaves everything on earth behind". Here are Bertha Little Coyote's songs and memories of government school, old-time Cheyenne life, fighting white boys, singing around the drum, dancing with the war mothers, being baptized in the lake, and dreaming important dreams. Ethnomusicologist Virginia Giglio says of her teacher, "It was the depth of her personality, her power, her particular ability to speak and sing right to the quick of my heart that compelled me to write her life and record her songs". The songs and excerpts of conversations on the compact disc are essential to a complete reading of Leaving Everything Behind because Bertha's story is a musical as well as an oral narrative. With the book and the CD, readers and listeners will experience what it is like to know Bertha Little Coyote at first hand.

Book Marriage and Inequality in Classless Societies

Download or read book Marriage and Inequality in Classless Societies written by Jane Fishburne Collier and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 1993-02-01 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study presents three ideal-typic models for analyzing inequality in kin-based, non-stratified societies that are commonly described as bands, tribes or ranked societies (but not chiefdoms). Each model discusses the organization of inequality associated with a particular way of validating marriages. The book is a serious and complex attempt to understand the bases and dynamics of inequality in classless societies. It offers a sophisticated argument for the position that there is a culturally-structured basis for women's universal subordination. An important strength of Collier's theoretical interpretation is that it makes the case for universality of subordination without slipping into biological reductionism.

  • Author : Loretta Fowler
  • Publisher : University of Oklahoma Press

Download or read book Wives and Husbands written by Loretta Fowler and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2012-10-01 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Wives and Husbands, distinguished anthropologist Loretta Fowler deepens readers’ understanding of the gendered dimension of cultural encounters by exploring how the Arapaho gender system affected and was affected by the encounter with Americans as government officials, troops, missionaries, and settlers moved west into Arapaho country. Fowler examines Arapaho history from 1805 to 1936 through the lens of five cohorts, groups of women and men born during different year spans. Through the life stories of individual Arapahos, she vividly illustrates the experiences and actions of each cohort during a time when Americans tried to impose gender asymmetry and to undermine the Arapahos’ hierarchical age relations. Fowler examines the Arapaho gender system and its transformations by considering the partnerships between, rather than focusing on comparisons of, women and men. She argues that in particular cohorts, partnerships between women and men — both in households and in the community — shaped Arapahos’ social and cultural transformations while they struggled with American domination. Over time Arapahos both reinforced and challenged Arapaho hierarchies while accommodating and resisting American dominance. Fowler shows how, in the process of reconfiguring their world, Arapahos confronted Americans by uniting behind strategies of conciliation in the early nineteenth century, of civilization in the late nineteenth century, and of confrontation in the early twentieth century. At the same time, women and men in particular cohorts were revamping Arapaho politico-religious ideas and organizations. Gender played a part in these transformations, giving shape to new leadership traditions and other adaptations.
