Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chesapeake and Ohio Canal Documents, 1826 Little Wills Creek and Buffalo Run were gauged* at the points A and B, the extremes of the shorter proposed summit level, and were found to discharge, the former six, and the latter nine cubic feet per second, equal together fifteen cubic feet. This supply, it is presumed, would be adequate to the demand of the summit, if it could be relied on as constant; but it is known that a calculation of this kind would be greatly erroneous. These streams were represented by some per sons (who, residing in their vicinity, must necessarily have noticed their changes, ) as discharging, at the period of the examination, about double the quantity they give in the dryest season this would give, supposing their estimate correct, but 7% cubic feet as their collective minimum expense, and even this, it is believed, would, after a fair in vestigation, be found to exceed the truth. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chesapeake and Ohio Canal Documents, 1823, Vol. 4 Sm: Captain Dale, of the United States' Navy, called upon me this morning, and in conversation upon the naval arsenal or dry docks 'pro posed by you to be erected at the Federal City, which he most warmly approved, he informed me that the Swedish Government had lately conceiv ed the idea of adopting the same means of preserving their navy in times of peace. The Swedish Admiral Soderstrom described to him the situation of the dock. Which was then in the progress of construction. It was intended to contain eight ships of 74 guns, and another was projected to contain twelve; in all, making provision for 20 ships of the line. The situation was remarkably favorable. Deep water close to a perpendicular rock, which can be easily wrought. Gives the opportunity of excavating the dock the rock forms the wall. And the roof is laid over, such a height, that the ships go in with their lower masts standing. Cap tain Dale did not exactly know how the ships were worked into the deck, but from his description of the situation I presume they 'are tide-docks. Admiral Soderstrom said that the vessels were to be washed with fresh water, perfectly drained, and opened to a circulation of air; and that he had no doubt of their remaining in perfect repair in the dock fora century, and gave many reasons for'bis opinion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chesapeake and Ohio Canal Old Picture Album We begin to see photographs of the canal in the 18605 during the Civil War. In fact, some of the Brady/ Handy photographs of that period remain as examples of excellence in photography today. After the war there is a paucity of photos until the late l88os. Photographs then become more common and we have a fairly good selection in the first two decades or so through the end of the operating period in 1924. Unfortunately, photographers take pictures of the same things, so that there are many photos of the same places in the historic operating period, but many gaps. Beginning about 1938, with the acquisition of the canal by the National Park Service, we see a more systematic study of the canal as different considerations began to develop as to the use of the canal. For this reason, I have selected some photos which are historical, but not of the canal operating period, so as to lend a feeling of continuity as we travel from one end of the canal to the other. My associate, Bill Shank, and I thought that with the American Bicentennial occurring this year, and with the 150th anniversary of the beginning of construction of the C. 8: 0. Canal only two years away, that this would be the ideal time to bring out a book on some of the old time scenes on the old C. 8: 0. Canal. I have selected 100 of some of my favorites to share with you. I hope you like looking at them as much as I did selecting them.
