Download or read book Chemical Induction of Cancer written by Joseph C. Arcos and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chemical Induction of Cancer: Structural Bases and Biological Mechanisms, Volume I discusses the role of chemicals in the genesis of cancer in man. This book is organized into two parts encompassing four chapters that also present the concepts and techniques of testing chemicals for carcinogenic potential. After an introduction to the distinctions between normal and neoplastic cells, this book goes on describing the structure of potential carcinogens, including alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, and aromatic hydrocarbons. The next chapter deals with the role of intra- and intermolecular forces of chemicals in their carcinogenic activity. The last chapter discusses some aspects of the pathology of chemically-induced tumors. This chapter also provides the concept and testing procedures of animal assays. This book is of great value to oncologists, pathologists, and general medical practitioners.

Download or read book Chemical Carcinogenesis 2 written by A. Columbano and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 632 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "chemical carcinogenesis" is the general title of the series of international meetings which are held, biannually, in sardinia (Italy) since 1981. Despite the generality of the title, the main effort of the scientific Committee has been to pursue a coherent line around one of the most distinguishing features of carcinogenesis: the "multifasic" development of the process. Given that many chemical compounds are known to cause "experimental cancer", many questions still remain unresolved or are given too simplistic answers. The very first question concerning the interaction between the chemical carcinogen and the molecular target in the cell is a debatable one despite the overwhelming literature in this field. It is certain that chemical carcinogens are toxic to cells and cause DNA damage: however it is still an open question as to how to relate these changes to the different stages of carcinogenesis including initiation. We have not to forget that 1/3 to 2/3 of the average life time of a given species elapses between the experimental administration of the carcinogen and the appearance of "cancer". The experimental manipulation of carcinogenesis through the use of "adequate biological models" has not simplified the problems about cancer, but it has led us to face the complexity of otherwise elementary biological properties, cell proliferation and differentiation. The understanding of this biological complexity is not just theoretical, but it may give us those adequate conceptual tools to approach "cancer" also from a medical point of view.

Book excerpt: Coal, still used to generate more than half of the electric power in the U.S., will likely be part of any future global energy plan. But this finite resource is also responsible for 80 percent of the CO2 emissions from power production, and its continued use will require improved processing techniques that are less damaging to the environment and l

Download or read book Good Chemistry written by Jan Mehlich and published by Royal Society of Chemistry. This book was released on 2021-02-15 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Practicing chemists face a number of ethical considerations, from issues of attribution of authorship through the potential environmental impact of a new process to the decision to work on chemicals that could be weaponised. By keeping ethical considerations in mind when working, chemists can build their own credibility, contribute to public trust in the chemical sciences and do science that benefits the world. Divided into three parts, methodological aspects, research ethics, and social and environmental implications, Good Chemistry introduces tools and concepts to help chemists recognise the ethical and social dimensions of their own work and act appropriately. Written to support chemistry students in their studies this book includes practice questions and examples of relevant situations to help students engage with the subject and prepare for their professional life in academia, industry, or public service.
