Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a comprehensive textbook for upper level undergraduates which discusses the nature of heterogeneous systems in the natural environment. The links between and within the various environmental compartments - air, water, soil - are emphasized. The book describes the chemistry of natural systems, their composition and the processes and reactions that operate within and between the various compartments. Without focusing specifically on pollution, it also discusses ways in which these systems respond to perturbations, either those that are natural or those that are caused by humans. Background material from subjects such as atmospheric science, limnology, and soil science is provided in order to establish a setting for a description of the relevant chemistry. Emphasis is on general principles that can be applied in a variety of circumstances. At the same time, these principles are illustrated with examples taken from around the world. Because of issues of the environment related to every society, care has been taken to relate the subject material to situations in urban and rural areas in both highly industrialized and low-income countries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chemistry Fundamentals: An Environmental Perspective, Second Editionaims to guide students to the knowledge that humans live in a chemical environment and that chemistry effects every aspect of our lives. The text emphasizes that all living and non-living parts of our environment are made up of chemicals, and that the natural processes continuously occurring in the environment all involve chemical reactions. With a grasp of this notion of interdependence, students begin to see that without some understanding of chemistry, it is impossible to fully understand environmental issues such as ozone depletion, global warming, air and water pollution, and the hazards of radioactivity.Author's Note:Phyllis Buell & James Girard"At present there is worldwide concern that many of our human activities are endangering -- perhaps permanently -- the quality of the environment and that the time for action to address these problems is running out. The public is becoming increasingly aware of the environmental damage caused by pesticides, toxic wastes, chlorofluorocarbons, nuclear radiation, oil spills, the greenhouse effect, and other human inputs. Environmental organizations like the Sierra Club, the National Wildlife Federation, and Friends of the Earth are gaining support -- especially on college campuses -- and are becoming a major influence in the political arena. Articles on environmental issues appear daily in the newspapers, and Congress is introducing legislation to combat threats to the environment.Paralleling this widespread concern for the environment is the realization that the majority of United States citizens, including those with a college degree, are virtually science-illiterate and are not, therefore, well-equipped to make informed decisions on environmental issues. As a response to this crisis in science education, many universities and colleges, American University included, are altering their general curriculums to require science courses for all entering students -- for nonscience majors as well as for science majors. To meet the new science requirements, more and more chemistry departments are offering courses with an environmental perspective, hoping to capture the interest of students who otherwise would not choose a chemistry course."

Book Chemistry of Phytopotentials Health Energy and Environmental Perspectives

Download or read book Chemistry of Phytopotentials Health Energy and Environmental Perspectives written by LD Khemani and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-12-02 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the beginning of human civilization, plants have been our true companions. Plants contribute not only to our existence but also serve us through discovery, design and the treatment of various diseases where there is no satisfactory cure in modern medicine. This has focused Natural Product Chemists to unravel plants therapeutic potential in the light of modern analytical and pharmacological understandings. Presence of multiple active phytochemicals in medicinal plants offers exciting opportunity for the development of novel therapeutics, providing scientific justification for their use in traditional medicines. Non-food plants have been recognized as biofactories for the production of eco-friendly value added materials including agricultural, food products, enzymes, nutraceuticals etc. They have also been widely explored for personal care, industrial products and sources of energy generation. The proven efficacy of botanicals has been appreciated by the scientific community and strengthened plant-human relationship. The synergism in the Phytoproducts, the result of the interaction of two or more moieties, is not simply additive but multiplicative. Recent acceptance of the Food and Drug Administration (US) for herbal-medicine based preparation has renewed interest in Natural Product Research. The year 2011 is declared as the International Year of Chemistry (IYC 2011) by the United Nations Assembly. On this occasion, the present conference CPHEE 2011 aims to offer chemists from diverse areas to come to a common platform to share the knowledge and unveil the chemistry and magic potentials of phytoproducts for the mankind.

Book Environmental Issues in Chemical Perspective

Download or read book Environmental Issues in Chemical Perspective written by Thomas G. Spiro and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 1980-01-01 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An in-depth presentation of the chemistry required to evaluate the choices we must make regarding our environment, this study has four parts: energy, the atmosphere, the hydrosphere, and the biosphere. Each part is followed by problem sets that require the application of chemical principles to such issues as dwindling natural gas and petroleum resources; fission and fusion as energy sources; CO2 build-up and the greenhouse effect; automobile emission control; acid rain; eutrophication of lakes; lead, mercury, and cadmium poisoning; and environmental links to cancer. An answer manual for the problems is included. Social, political, and economic concerns are also covered. The authors show how chemists and non-chemist decision-makers can take account of each other's perspectives.

Download or read book Industrial Ecology written by Stanley E. Manahan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-01 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Industrial ecology may be a relatively new concept - yet it's already proven instrumental for solving a wide variety of problems involving pollution and hazardous waste, especially where available material resources have been limited. By treating industrial systems in a manner that parallels ecological systems in nature, industrial ecology provides a substantial addition to the technologies of environmental chemistry. Stanley E. Manahan, bestselling author of many environmental chemistry books for Lewis Publishers, now examines Industrial Ecology: Environmental Chemistry and Hazardous Waste. His study of this innovative technology uses an overall framework of industrial ecology to cover hazardous wastes from an environmental chemistry perspective. Chapters one to seven focus on how industrial ecology relates to environmental science and technology, with consideration of the anthrosphere as one of five major environmental spheres. Subsequent chapters deal specifically with hazardous substances and hazardous waste, as they relate to industrial ecology and environmental chemistry.
