Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until now, information regarding chemical spill clean-up was available only through manufacturer's literature from an individual firm, or scattered in the traditional textbooks on remediation engineering and hazardous waste management. Survey of Chemical Spill Countermeasures provides a one-stop source of information on how to clean up spill sites in safe, acceptable ways. Because of the ever-growing need to maintain constant vigilance over hazardous chemicals and potential leaks and spills, this reference will become an important source for the practicing environmental engineer and field technician. Survey of Chemical Spill Countermeasures provides operators with useful information on how to clean up sites, including controlling leakage, containment of spills on land and water, and ways to safely transfer and store the contaminants. Additionally, the book includes up-to-date information on containment and treatment technologies, from dredging and vacuuming, to solid and vapor treatment systems.

Book Contaminated Water Supplies at Camp Lejeune

Download or read book Contaminated Water Supplies at Camp Lejeune written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2009-09-06 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early 1980s, two water-supply systems on the Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune in North Carolina were found to be contaminated with the industrial solvents trichloroethylene (TCE) and perchloroethylene (PCE). The water systems were supplied by the Tarawa Terrace and Hadnot Point watertreatment plants, which served enlisted-family housing, barracks for unmarried service personnel, base administrative offices, schools, and recreational areas. The Hadnot Point water system also served the base hospital and an industrial area and supplied water to housing on the Holcomb Boulevard water system (full-time until 1972 and periodically thereafter). This book examines what is known about the contamination of the water supplies at Camp Lejeune and whether the contamination can be linked to any adverse health outcomes in former residents and workers at the base.

Book A Practical Guide to Chemical Spill Response

Download or read book A Practical Guide to Chemical Spill Response written by John Hosty and published by Van Nostrand Reinhold Company. This book was released on 1992 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the type and intensity of spills may vary, responders who are called upon to meet these emergency situations need a consistent, generic battle plan. That's exactly what they'll find when they read John Hosty and Patricia Foster's practical new guide on chemical spill response. They take readers from the planning stages, through actual first-response techniques, to disposal and cleanup methods, creating an airtight approach to spills that drastically reduces the possibility of error. A Practical Guide to Chemical Spill Response begins by addressing pre-incident activities, including the development of a contingency plan and personnel training that enhances responders' understanding of handling, storage, and disposal techniques. Here, the book acknowledges the many federal regulations - including the Superfund Amendments and Reauthorization Act, the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, and relevant Canadian standards - the Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act, Provincial Spill Legislation, and the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System - to ensure that responders comply with these mandates. The book emphasizes the need for a coherent approach to spills, with coverage of the government and industry organizations that may be called upon to assist in an integrated response to specific situations. And it underscores the need for good public relations, stressing that personnel should be selected to deal with the media before incidents occur. The guide moves on to equipment review in light of U.S. and Canadian statutes, covering such areas as respiratory protection, protective clothing, and decontamination procedures. It then details the specific characteristics of hazardous materials, including flammability, corrosivity, toxicity, reactivity, and other incident risks. Readers are then fully prepared for the ensuing coverage of actual response techniques to the full range of emergency spills - among them, ground spills, water spills, contamination of the air, rail and truck spills, and in-plant spills. Throughout, illustrations clarify the response methods discussed. Wide-ranging enough to serve first responders working in the U.S. and Canada, and detailed enough to point up differences in the regulatory mandates of the two countries, A Practical Guide to Chemical Spill Response is a reference all spill control managers, emergency response coordinators, and their workers will want to have at hand.

Book Assessing the Effects of the Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill on Human Health

Download or read book Assessing the Effects of the Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill on Human Health written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2010-09-01 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the origin of the leak, to the amount of oil released into the environment, to the spill's duration, the 2010 Gulf of Mexico oil spill poses unique challenges to human health. The risks associated with extensive, prolonged use of dispersants, with oil fumes, and with particulate matter from controlled burns are also uncertain. There have been concerns about the extent to which hazards, such as physical and chemical exposures and social and economic disruptions, will impact the overall health of people who live and work near the area of the oil spill. Although studies of previous oil spills provide some basis for identifying and mitigating the human health effects of these exposures, the existing data are insufficient to fully understand and predict the overall impact of hazards from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill on the health of workers, volunteers, residents, visitors, and special populations. Assessing the Effects of the Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill on Human Health identifies populations at increased risks for adverse health effects and explores effective communication strategies to convey health information to these at-risk populations. The book also discusses the need for appropriate surveillance systems to monitor the spill's potential short- and long-term health effects on affected communities and individuals. Assessing the Effects of the Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill on Human Health is a useful resource that can help policy makers, public health officials, academics, community advocates, scientists, and members of the public collaborate to create a monitoring and surveillance system that results in "actionable" information and that identifies emerging health risks in specific populations.
