Book Fouling Organisms of the Indian Ocean

Download or read book Fouling Organisms of the Indian Ocean written by Rachakonda Nagabhushanam and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-08-13 with total page 551 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marine fouling organisms attach permanently to ship hulls and underwater parts of offshore structures. All maritime nations spend millions, even billions of dollars to get rid of them. Believing that a pooling of knowledge of all aspects of the basic biology of fouling organisms and a re-examination of control technology methods are steps needed for the solution of this problem, the aim of the book is to highlight recent advances in fouling control technology and, at the same time, provide basic information on the biology of fouling organisms found in the Indian Ocean. The book begins by presenting an overview of research done in India on the marine fouling organisms and wood-borers of the Indian Ocean. It them moves through chapters dealing with the seccession of fouling communities, chemical cues in larval settlement, epibiosis, methods of fouling prevention, functional morphology, and distribution of foulers in Indian waters.

Book excerpt: Marine environment is a habitant for several species and significantly plays an essential role in the food cycle and climate regulation. Several species including fish and invertebrates that are used as food for humans. Marine larvae species also contain metabolites and are useful for protection and cure of several diseases. This book provides information on aquaculture production, larval feeding, early stage of marine invertebrate’s bioassay and zebrafish model for drug toxicity. This book will interest scientists in the field of marine biotechnology, life sciences, materials scientists, aquaculture companies, and natural product researchers.

Book Evolutionary Ecology of Marine Invertebrate Larvae

Download or read book Evolutionary Ecology of Marine Invertebrate Larvae written by Tyler J. Carrier and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "More than seventy percent of the earth's surface is covered by the ocean which is home to a staggering and sometimes overwhelming diversity of organisms, the majority of which reside in pelagic form. Marine invertebrate larvae are an integral component of this pelagic diversity and have stimulated the curiosity of researchers for centuries. This accessible, upper-level text provides an important and timely update on the topic of larval evolution and ecology, representing the first major synthesis of this interdisciplinary field for more than 20 years. The content is structured around four major areas: evolutionary origins and transitions in developmental mode; functional morphology and ecology of larval forms; larval transport, settlement, and metamorphosis; larval ecology in extreme and changing environments. This novel synthesis integrates traditional larval ecology with life history theory, evolutionary developmental biology, and modern genomics research to provide a research and teaching tool for decades to come." -- from the rear cover.

Book Bacterial Induction of Settlement and Metamorphosis in Marine Invertebrates

Download or read book Bacterial Induction of Settlement and Metamorphosis in Marine Invertebrates written by and published by . This book was released on with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In reviewing the complexity and diversity of bacterial mediation of settlement and metamorphosis of marine invertebrate larvae, we give particular attention to settlement and metamorphosis on macroscopic biological substrata, focusing on bacteria-mediated induction of larvae by non-geniculate coralline algae. We consider the evolution of interactions between marine substrata, bacteria and larvae, and offer arguments as to why natural selection may favour these interactions. We speculate that bacterial induction of settlement and metamorphosis in marine invertebrates might be more widespread than is generally recognised.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The seashore has long been the subject of fascination and study - the Ancient Greek scholar Aristotle made observations and wrote about Mediterranean sea urchins. The considerable knowledge of what to eat and where it could be found has been passed down since prehistoric times by oral tradition in many societies - in Britain it is still unwise to eat shellfish in months without an 'r' in them. Over the last three hundred years or so we have seen the formalization of science and this of course has touched intertidal ecology. Linnaeus classified specimens collected from the seashore and many common species (Patella vulgata L. , Mytilus edulis L. , Littorina littorea (L. )) bear his imprint because he formally described, named and catalogued them. Early natural historians described zonation patterns in the first part of the 19th century (Audouin and Milne-Edwards, 1832), and the Victorians became avid admirers and collectors of shore animals and plants with the advent of the new fashion of seaside holidays (Gosse, 1856; Kingsley, 1856). As science became professionalized towards the end of the century, marine biologists took advantage of low tides to gain easy access to marine life for taxonomic work and classical studies of functional morphology. The first serious studies of the ecology of the shore were made at this time (e. g.

Book Initial Settlement of Marine Invertebrate Larvae

Download or read book Initial Settlement of Marine Invertebrate Larvae written by Cheryl Ann Hannan and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 1278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The hypothesis that planktonic larvae of benthic invertebrates sink through the water like passive particles in turbulent flows near the seabed was tested in the field using several groups of geometrically different sediment trap designs. A priori predictions regarding the rank order that the various traps would collect larvae in the field were dictated from laboratory flume experiments to determine the relative particle collection efficiencies of the traps. The flume flow was seeded with particles having fall velocities similar to those measured, in the laboratory, for nonswimming polychaete larvae. The flume flow speed (of about 10 cm/sec) was within the range of near-bottom current velocities measured during trap collection intervals at the field study site. The passive sinking hypothesis could not be falsified for collections of organisms from three invertebrate phyla (polychaetes, bivalves, and enteropneusts) in seven field experiments. Thus, hydrodynamical processes must be included in any future studies of mechanisms that determine patterns of larval settlement. Other processes that could have produced the results now must be tested against the passive sinking alternative hypothesis. If larvae sink like passive particles in near-bottom flows, as the results of this study suggest, then larvae may initially reach the seafloor at sites where particulates, with fall velocities similar to larvae, initially settle.

Book excerpt: During the past 20 years, marine chemical ecology has emerged as a respected field of study providing a better understanding of the role natural products play in organisms and their environments. Ample data in this book advocates the conservation of marine environments for future drug discovery efforts while sustaining their overall health. Marine chemical ecology has expanded to include research in the areas of predator–prey interactions, marine microbial chemical ecology, and seasonal and geographical distribution of marine natural products.
