Book Shaping Nursing Care in a New Chemical Dependency Unit

Download or read book Shaping Nursing Care in a New Chemical Dependency Unit written by Marcia A. Noakes and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Disorganization, apprehension, and poor ratings for nurse satisfaction were found in a newly created chemical dependency unit. Being that an addiction nurse carries a huge responsibility that can positively or negatively affect a patient in the initial stages of recovery from chemical dependency; the goal of this project was to determine what steps are needed to enhance the nursing care in this unit. An extensive literature search confirmed that an educational plan including essential knowledge about addiction, addiction treatment, the role of an addictions nurse, and the expectations of the job was required. A plan was formulated using Peplau's Interpersonal Relations Theory as the nursing model. Steps were outlined for the implementation, evaluation and dissemination of the educational plan and the predicted findings. The research presumption is that by enhancing nursing care through education, patient care and patient outcomes will be positively impacted.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Completely rewritten from cover to cover, the contemporary new 8th edition of "CONCEPTS OF CHEMICAL DEPENDENCY" provides comprehensive coverage and the latest information on a full spectrum of substance use disorders and the compounds commonly abused. Topics include: the abuse of and addiction to alcohol; how the active agent in marijuana, THC, affects neural growth and development; the emerging body of evidence suggesting a relationship between marijuana abuse and psychotic disorders; the emerging body of evidence suggesting that marijuana is not as benign as it was thought to be even a few years ago; and updated information on the abuse of cough syrups, a trend that has evolved in adolescent substance abusers in the past decade. Adding to the book's usefulness and relevance, Doweiko also covers topics not usually discussed in other substance abuse texts, including: abuse of anabolic steroids; inhalants; many of the forms of infectious disease associated with substance abuse; how the "war on drugs" has actually contributed to the problem of substance abuse/addiction in this country; the relationship between substance abuse and many infectious diseases; and the latest information on the "medical marijuana" debate. Providing a comprehensive overview of the problems of substance abuse and addiction, students report that they appreciate the author's balanced approach in contrast to a tendency to "preach" to the reader that "drugs are bad for you". Student feedback indicates that they value the clear and detailed information provided, allowing the student to form their own opinion about the compound(s) being discussed in each chapter.

Book Substance Use Disorders in the U S Armed Forces

Download or read book Substance Use Disorders in the U S Armed Forces written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2013-03-21 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Problems stemming from the misuse and abuse of alcohol and other drugs are by no means a new phenomenon, although the face of the issues has changed in recent years. National trends indicate substantial increases in the abuse of prescription medications. These increases are particularly prominent within the military, a population that also continues to experience long-standing issues with alcohol abuse. The problem of substance abuse within the military has come under new scrutiny in the context of the two concurrent wars in which the United States has been engaged during the past decade-in Afghanistan (Operation Enduring Freedom) and Iraq (Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation New Dawn). Increasing rates of alcohol and other drug misuse adversely affect military readiness, family readiness, and safety, thereby posing a significant public health problem for the Department of Defense (DoD). To better understand this problem, DoD requested that the Institute of Medicine (IOM) assess the adequacy of current protocols in place across DoD and the different branches of the military pertaining to the prevention, screening, diagnosis, and treatment of substance use disorders (SUDs). Substance Use Disorders in the U.S. Armed Forces reviews the IOM's task of assessing access to SUD care for service members, members of the National Guard and Reserves, and military dependents, as well as the education and credentialing of SUD care providers, and offers specific recommendations to DoD on where and how improvements in these areas could be made.

Leroy Thompson served as a counselor and a trainer of counselors, with a focus on chemical dependency. During this time, he has come to realize that, as significant as theory is to counseling, when it comes to effective results, practice is the key. Unwrapping the Gifts of Recovery is a valuable resource for chemical dependency counselors that mentions theory, but focuses on practice. Full of guides, step-by-step processes, and counselor exercises, this book teaches tools that professionals can apply to achieve more effective outcomes in their counseling practices. Recovery is a joint effort between the counselor and the client, but it begins with and will be unique to the client. Counselors will learn the best way to elicit and engage their clients' values and beliefs in order to help them successfully achieve abstinence, sobriety, and recovery. Written for chemical dependency counselors and therapists, this book can be used as a quick reference, additional training, or a re-imagining of how to approach the work of recovery.
