Book Diderot and a Poetics of Science

Download or read book Diderot and a Poetics of Science written by Suzanne Rodin Pucci and published by Peter Lang Incorporated, International Academic Publishers. This book was released on 1986 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study explores the rhetorical and linguistic modes of discourse that articulate Diderot's theory and methodology of experimental science and philosophy. Diderot's focus, particularly in De l'Interpretation de la nature, on the importance of experimentation in the domain of nature's material reality necessarily poses the epistemological and literary problematic of representation whose textual resolutions and strategies constitute a poetics of science. The principle of nature is examined as textual referent, as image, as a complex weave of descriptive and narrative functions that organizes the operations of the experimenting, narrating and writing subjects. In restoring the dimensions of 18th-century epistemology and language theory to Diderot's proposals for experimental philosophy, this study provides a model for reading Diderot across the demarcations of philosophy, esthetics, language theory and fiction, raising issues central to the interdisciplinary concerns of modern critical inquiry."

Book Before Fiction

    Book Details:
  • Author : Nicholas D. Paige
  • Publisher : University of Pennsylvania Press
  • Release : 2011-08-16
  • ISBN : 0812205103
  • Pages : 301 pages

Download or read book Before Fiction written by Nicholas D. Paige and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2011-08-16 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fiction has become nearly synonymous with literature itself, as if Homer and Dante and Pynchon were all engaged in the same basic activity. But one difficulty with this view is simply that a literature trafficking in openly invented characters is a quite recent development. Novelists before the nineteenth century ceaselessly asserted that their novels were true stories, and before that, poets routinely took their basic plots and heroes from the past. We have grown accustomed to thinking of the history of literature and the novel as a progression from the ideal to the real. Yet paradoxically, the modern triumph of realism is also the triumph of a literature that has shed all pretense to literalness. Before Fiction: The Ancien Régime of the Novel offers a new understanding of the early history of the genre in England and France, one in which writers were not slowly discovering a type of fictionality we now take for granted but rather following a distinct set of practices and rationales. Nicholas D. Paige reinterprets Lafayette's La Princesse de Clèves, Rousseau's Julie, ou la Nouvelle Héloïse, Diderot's La Religieuse, and other French texts of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries in light of the period's preoccupation with literal truth. Paige argues that novels like these occupied a place before fiction, a pseudofactual realm that in no way leads to modern realism. The book provides an alternate way of looking at a familiar history, and in its very idiom and methodology charts a new course for how we should study the novel and think about the evolution of cultural forms.

Book Hindsight and Insight

Download or read book Hindsight and Insight written by William F. Edmiston and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2010-11 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William F. Edmiston revises current theories of what narratologists call &"focalization&" and applies his revised theory to four eighteenth-century French memoir-novels. Hindsight and Insight contributes to our knowledge of the history and evolution of the novel by demonstrating that France's earliest novelists were already engaged in the kinds of narrative experimentation that are usually associated with modern writers. It presents an analysis of the narrative point of view in both its theoretical aspects and its practical applications. Edmiston exposes the inadequacies of current concepts of focalization and proposes a revised concept that is applicable to personal narration, one that can accommodate all the focal possibilities available to the first-person narrator. He applies this concept to four French memior-novels: Les Egarements du coeur et de l'esprit by Marivaux, Manon Lescaut by Pr&évost, and La Religieuse by Diderot. Each of these well-known novels offers a different case study and raises specific theoretical questions of selective focalization, forms of reported speech, problems of temporal ambiguity, manipulation of the reader, narratorial reliability, and cognitive privilege. Edmiston's study proposes a reading of the novels that resolves certain problems of interpretation raised by other recent studies.
