Book Get to the Point

Download or read book Get to the Point written by Joel Schwartzberg and published by Berrett-Koehler Publishers. This book was released on 2017-10-16 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this indispensable guide for anyone who must communicate in speech or writing, Schwartzberg shows that most of us fail to convince because we don't have a point-a concrete contention that we can argue, defend, illustrate, and prove. He lays out, step-by-step, how to develop one. In Joel's Schwartzberg's ten-plus years as a strategic communications trainer, the biggest obstacle he's come across-one that connects directly to nervousness, stammering, rambling, and epic fail-is that most speakers and writers don't have a point. They typically have just a title, a theme, a topic, an idea, an assertion, a catchphrase, or even something much less. A point is something more. It's a contention you can propose, argue, defend, illustrate, and prove. A point offers a position of potential value. Global warming is real is not a point. Scientific evidence shows that global warming is a real, human-generated problem that will have a devastating environmental and financial impact is a point. When we have a point, our influence snaps into place. We communicate belief, conviction, and urgency. This book shows you how to identify your point, leverage it, stick to it, and sell it and how to train others to identify and successfully make their own points.

Book Great Stories Don t Write Themselves

Download or read book Great Stories Don t Write Themselves written by Larry Brooks and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2019-11-12 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most common questions new writers ask professionals is how they wrote their book—what was their process for storytelling? Did they use an outline to plan the book, or write it from the seat of their pants? But really the question should be about the general principles and nature of storycraft—does every part of a story have what it needs to keep readers turning the pages? Bestselling author and creator of StoryFix.com Larry Brooks changes the sound of the writing conversation by introducing a series of detailed criteria for novelists of every level and genre to refer to while writing, regardless of their preferred writing method. Beginning with the broadest part of the story, the early checklists help writers to ensure that their novel is based on a premise rather than an idea, and gradually hones in on other elements to keep the story moving forward including: · dramatic tension · narrative strategy · scene construction Readers won't know or care about the process. But what Brooks offers here is a chance for readers to make the most of whichever process they choose, and in doing so cut years off their learning curve.

Book ChatGPT as Author 100 Words Or Less

Download or read book ChatGPT as Author 100 Words Or Less written by Kurt Messick and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2023-03-10 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book of very short stories generated by Artificial Intelligence - 100 stories, to be exact, all of which are told in fewer than 100 words. This was an experiment in the creativity of ChatGPT. ChatGPT is a language model AI that is currently being used for a range of writing projects, and part of the conversation is about the creativity, or lack thereof, in the AI process. With that in mind, I created a simple prompt: Write a fictional short story about X in 60 words. The first prompt I used did not include the word fictional, and this created a problem, as sometimes the stories would end up more as reports about the subject rather than anything that might be more appropriately classified as a story. There are a few things readers might notice in these stories. The majority of the characters have female names. The stories tend to be more gender stereotypical in terms of the prompt word if it involves an occupation or identification (the Truck Driver is male, the story about the Toolbox features a male participant, etc.). Also, the stories, such as they are, are very simple, often without a plot, and more like an observation or a description of mood or emotion. The stories are overwhelmingly positive in tone, as if ChatGPT is drawing from resources like Chicken Soup for the Soul. Even the story with the prompt about the Devil ended up with love and kindness as a conclusion. The ChatGPT AI did not adhere to the prompt in terms of keeping the stories to 60 words, either exactly (which was my original hope) or even as an upper limit. Hence the title of the book, 100 stories in 100 words or less, as most of the stories ran over 60 words (the average word count across all 100 stories is 73.5, inclusive of titles). The AI's vocabulary is certainly high school level or above, but the ability to craft a story is definitely lacking. Many stories read as if they are elementary or middle school level at best, albeit with a larger stock of words. Despite these drawbacks, there are some interesting turns of phrase now and then, and a kind of hopefulness in that the AI defaults to the positive. The AI never generated anything that was completely unusable in terms of stories, but there are a few that were discarded because they sounded too much like history reports if the prompt was about a specific person. For example, the story with the prompt of Einstein seems more like a brief fictional description; the story on Abraham Lincoln is a little more toward reporting, and choosing more obscure figures like James K. Polk (a piece generated not included here) was more like a summary of a Wikipedia page. It was an interesting process, and my selection of prompts here has no particular order or grand plan in mind. This is more of a simple exercise than anything else, hoping to show some of the creativity as well as the creative limits of the ChatGPT AI as it currently functions.

Download or read book Dark Apprentice written by Val Neil and published by Living Relic Press. This book was released on 2021-05-20 with total page 451 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A psychopathic wizard. An immortal mage. An epic battle of wills. Nikolai doesn’t want much out of life: sex, immortality, and the power to disembowel anyone who crosses him. But with dark magic forbidden, his only option is Medea–a mage so deadly even the Enforcers give her a wide berth. Despite dire warnings that her apprentices don’t survive, Nikolai won’t stop until she agrees to train him. After all, he’s a killer himself. Barbaric and brutal, the training is a far cry from what Nikolai expects. When a mysterious illness strikes Nikolai down, he suspects he’s found the secret to Medea’s longevity. He resolves to find out what happened to her previous apprentices. If he can locate the source of her power, he can turn it against her. Medea swore off training dark wizards–none of them take the craft seriously and the ungrateful bastards always try to kill her. This one definitely seems the backstabbing type, but magic is dying out and she hasn’t felt such magical strength in centuries. If she can control the boy, show him that magic is more than curses and necromancy, he might obtain the power he desires. If not, well... What’s one more dead apprentice? If you enjoy dark fantasy with quirky, morally grey characters and humorous banter (but no romance), this is the book for you! Contains: - swearing, violence, some gore - some sex (not graphic) - no romance - manipulative protagonist that could be triggering to some - two neurodiverse leads (psychopathic and autistic)
