The full-size Doré-illustrated version of the famed novella, Atala, is an unforgettable visual experience delivered by an artist at the peak of his career. This Retro Restored Edition features: - 44 Gustave Doré illustrations - Large 8 1/2" x 11" pages - Epilogue - Introduction - Two Prefaces - Publisher's original page layouts - Classic period type font - Bold retro-styled cover design This rare illustrated printing was first published in 1884 and digitally restored by the CGR Restoration Workshop so that readers can lose themselves in Doré's intricate illustrations of colonial-era North America. Includes the Epilogue, Introduction, Preface to Atala and to Rene, and Preface to the First Edition. Doré's lavish depictions of trees, mountains, and wild scenery stand in contrast to the moving love story between Atala and Chactas. Though his work for Atala is not as well-known as that for Dante's Inferno, Paradise Lost, and Don Quixote, readers and art enthusiasts will enjoy Doré's touching and dramatic depictions of Chateaubriand's famed story in a rugged land filled with countless dangers and savage beauty. About the Artist: Master artist Gustave Doré (1832-1883) is known for the cinematic illustrations in Dante's Inferno, History of the Crusades, Doré's London: A Pilgrimage, and Milton's Paradise Lost. His mastery of human anatomy, background detail, shading, and landscape illustration transport readers into another world filled with detail and imagination. About the Publisher: The CGR Publishing Restoration Workshop uses a vast array of computers and digital scanners to restore, preserve, and enhance the classic works of writers and artists from the 19th century. Each new release includes display-quality covers, enlarged covers, and retro fonts. Select books include Dante's Inferno Retro Hell-Bound Edition, Gustave Doré's London: A Pilgrimage, The Complete Book of Birds, A Life of George Westinghouse, The Clock Book: A Detailed Illustrated Collection of Classic Clocks, The Aeroplane Speaks, and much more.

Book Photojournalism and the Origins of the French Writer House Museum 1881 1914

Download or read book Photojournalism and the Origins of the French Writer House Museum 1881 1914 written by Elizabeth Emery and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why did writers' private homes become so linked to their work that contemporaries began preserving them as museums? Photojournalism and the Origins of the French Writer House Museum addresses this and other questions by providing an overview of the social forces that brought writers' homes to the forefront of the French imagination at the end of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth. This study analyzes representations of the apartments and houses of Corneille, Hugo, Balzac, Dumas, Sand, Zola, Loti, Montesquiou, Mallarm?and Proust, among others, arguing that the writer's home became a contested space and an important part of the French patrimony at this time. This is the first book to emphasize the house museum as an essentially modern construct, and to trace the history of ideas leading to its institutionalization in twentieth-century France. The interdisciplinary study also brings new attention to the importance of photojournalism for fin-de-si?e France - and brings to light fascinating and forgotten examples of 'at home' photography by Dornac and Henri Mairet. Elizabeth Emery provides a fresh and compelling perspective on conjunctions between visual, literary, and material cultures.
