Le plus doux pelage, la narine suprêmement délicate, l’oreille mobile, la patte sans rivale et la griffe courbe empruntée au rosier ; l’animal le plus traqué, le moins heureux et, comme dit Pierre Loti, la bête la mieux organisée pour souffrir. Je n’ai guère cessé de chanter le chat. Mon los sans doute ne prendra fin qu’avec moi-même. Une grande vague, qui n’est point affaire de pusillanime tendresse, me mène, me ramène à lui ; c’est que souvent le chat, de par sa prédilection et sa fidélité, m’a semblé encore plus soucieux de moi que je n’étais occupée de lui. »
