Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the morning of January 1, 2000, Mark T. Adams started counting birds. His goal was to find the largest possible number of species in one year in Texas, an undertaking known in birding parlance as a Big Year. By the evening of December 31, he had tied the record of 489 species seen or heard within the state’s borders in a single calendar year. Traveling 30,000 miles across Texas by car and 18,000 miles by plane, Adams alone saw 92 percent of all bird species reported in the state in 2000. In Chasing Birds across Texas, Adams invites birders and others with a broad interest in the outdoors to join him in exploring Texas’ varied habitats on his quest for birds—from the upper coast to the lower coast; into the Hill Country, the Panhandle, and the Chihuahuan Desert; and up the Davis, Chisos, and Guadalupe Mountains. As he happily celebrates the bounty of the Valley’s spring migration or desperately searches for a Panhandle rarity, we watch him grow as a naturalist, exult in the Texas landscape, and benefit from the company of some of the world’s best birders. Informative, inspiring, and great fun, Chasing Birds across Texas conveys as perhaps no other bird book can the humor, obsession, dedication, and adventure that are all part of the sport of birding.

Book Chasing the City

Download or read book Chasing the City written by Joshua M Nason and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-08 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historically, many architects, planners, and urban designers solicit idealistic depictions of a controllable urban environment made from highly regulated geometrical organizations and systematically defined processes. Rather than working as urban "designers" who set out to control and implant external processes, we shift our approach to that of urban "detectives," who set out to chase the city. Charged with approaching the city more responsively, we investigate what we do not know, allowing the city to direct our work. As urban detectives, we have the ability to interrogate and respond to the elaborate patterns emerging from self-generated, internalized urban interactions. Chasing the City asks what are the current design trends shaping how we, first, understand the cities of today to, then, produce informed decisions on the continuously undefined evolving city of tomorrow. Intentionally, the work here does not adhere to rudimentary notions of supposed singularities or rely upon past generations of idealistic utopian models. Rather, Chasing the City delineates current models of urban investigation that seek to respond to the nature of cities and develop heretofore-urban strategies as concurrently negotiated future urbanism. This edited volume provides a collection of innovative design research projects based on shared notions of Chasing the City through three bodies of strategic frameworks: (1) Mapping, (2) Resource, and (3) Typology. This structure ultimately allows readers, as fellow urban detectives, access to exploratory tools and methods of detection that accumulate from our environs, both practical and projective in our chase of the city.

He became the go-to investigator for the director of the Texas Department of Public Safety, governors, and the state legislature. During the final years of his career, which coincided with the McCarthy era in the 1950s, he was the chief of internal security, charged with protecting Texans from the Red Menace. Using Ranger Dixon’s meticulously-kept diary entries, Kemp Dixon now tells his father’s compelling story.

Book excerpt: Chasing Evil tells the story of the evolution of modern fugitive investigations within the United States Marshals Service and the pursuit of notorious criminals Andrew Phillip Cunanan, Rafael Resendez-Ramirez (The Railway Killer), the Texas Seven, and John Allen Muhammad and Lee Boyd Malvo, better known as the Beltway Snipers. It describes outstanding investigative effort, new technologies, camaraderie, partnerships, tragic and brutal murders, and the enthusiasm, emotion, and passion during these intense investigations. Chasing Evil takes you through high-profile investigations for a serial killer, spree killers, escaped inmates, domestic terrorists, cop killers, and desperate criminals. It describes the progression of America’s oldest federal law enforcement agency into the most successful and respected fugitive investigative organization in the world. Recognized historically as part of the lore of the Old West, the U. S. Marshals Service has played a critical role in the outcome of some of the most important investigations in the past forty years. Since 1979, the U. S. Marshals Service has partnered with local, state, federal, and international agencies to bring the most violent and dangerous fugitives to justice. The cases intersect with communities from San Diego, where spree killer Andrew Cunanan was raised, to our nation’s capital, where the Beltway Snipers created fear and chaos during a three-week period in October of 2002. The murderous path of the Railway Killer across six states and into Mexico, over 13 years, is examined and detailed. After escaping from a Texas prison, the Texas Seven killed Irving Police Officer Aubrey Hawkins on Christmas Eve before leading law enforcement on a month-long chase which ended in the mountains of Colorado. Although separate investigations, these men had several traits in common. Each one of them was dangerous, violent, and evil.

Book Confessions of a Maddog

Download or read book Confessions of a Maddog written by Jay Dunston Milner and published by University of North Texas Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once upon a time there was an innocent lad from West Texas who wrote a novel and fell in with a rabble of Texas writers as they were bridging the literary gap between J. Frank Dobie and his paisanos and the current bumper crop of Texas writers who seem to be everywhere writing about everything. This rowdy rabble of gap bridgers bonded in a sort of literary and social club they called Maddog Inc. (Motto: Doing indefinable services to mankind.) But our hero managed to live through it all anyway. This is his story. Jay Milner was part of a generation of Texas writers whose heyday lasted from the late 1950s through the 1970s. The group comprised Billie Lee Brammer, Edwin "Bud" Shrake, Gary Cartwright, Dan Jenkins, Larry L. King, Pete Gent, and (peripherally) Larry McMurtry and Willie Morris, among others. From the musical scene there were the "picker poets" such as Willie Nelson, Jerry Jeff Walker, Guy Clark, Billy Joe Shaver, and Waylon Jennings. Some of the primary works coming from this generation of writers include Brammer's The Gay Place, Shrake's Strange Peaches, Cartwright's Confessions of a Washed-up Sportswriter, King's The Whorehouse Papers and None But a Blockhead, Jan Reid's The Improbable Rise of Redneck Rock, and Willie Nelson's album Phases and Stages.
