Book Go Long

Download or read book Go Long written by Jerry Rice and published by Ballantine Books. This book was released on 2008-01-29 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Go Long! Jerry Rice shares the inspirational lessons and empowering practices that have helped him attain success, both on the football field and off. Through the ups and downs of Rice’s life and incomparable career, we discover how self-motivation, determination, and humility are the keys to achievement and true fulfillment. It’s been a long journey for Jerry Rice, from his childhood as a bricklayer’s son in Crawford, Mississippi, to a berth in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Along the way, Rice has been fueled by tireless effort and a belief in a few simple principles, among them that achievement is a voyage, not a destination; that modesty and perseverance, not talent, are what determine how far you will go; and that everyone should strive to be a role model. Rice even demonstrates these rules in action, breaking down the greatest games from his stellar career. Go Long! is an inspiring book by a living sports legend. More than that, however, it is the story of how Jerry Rice awakened the champion within, illustrating how we, too, can unlock inner greatness. “Rice was nobody’s fool as a player. He kept his tongue in check for most of his twenty-one-year career, understanding performance, not oratory, was his occupation. Now retired, Rice has taken the muzzle off [and] it is that persona which emerges from the book.” –Press Democrat (Santa Rosa, California)

Book excerpt: Winner of the 2018 Nebraska Book Award for Fiction A rousing, suspenseful debut novel—True Grit meets Catch Me If You Can—based on the forgotten true story of a Robin Hood of the American frontier who pulls off the first successful kidnapping for ransom in U.S. history “A kidnapper with a social-justice mission” (Time), Pat Crowe was once the most wanted man in America. World, Chase Me Down resurrects him, telling the electrifying story of the first great crime of the last century: how in 1900 the out-of-work former butcher kidnapped the teenage son of Omaha’s wealthiest meatpacking tycoon for a ransom of $25,000 in gold, and then burgled, safe-cracked, and bond-jumped his way across the country and beyond, inciting a manhunt that was dubbed “the thrill of the nation” and a showdown in the court of public opinion between the haves and have-nots—all the while plotting a return to the woman he never stopped loving. As if channeling Mark Twain and Charles Portis, Andrew Hilleman has given us a character who is bawdy and soulful, grizzled, salty, and hard-drinking, and with a voice as unforgettable as that of Lucy Marsden in Alan Gurganus’s Oldest Living Confederate Widow Tells All—an antihero you can’t help rooting for.

This user-friendly reference provides words/phrases and meanings/synonyms by using an example sentence. Says the author, “For seven years I housed international students who were attending English language schools in Sydney, and I realised that although they had a good grasp of formal grammar, they struggled to understand not only colloquial English, but many of the commonly used phrasal verbs, which could not be found in a standard English/Spanish, French, etc., dictionary. It was then that I decided to start writing some of them down for future reference and it grew from there.”

Book Man of Constant Sorrow

Download or read book Man of Constant Sorrow written by Ralph Stanley and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2009-10-15 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A giant of American music opens the book on his wrenching professional and personal journeys, paying tribute to the vanishing Appalachian culture that gave him his voice. He was there at the beginning of bluegrass. Yet his music, forged in the remote hills and hollows of Southwest Virginia, has even deeper roots. In Man of Constant Sorrow, Dr. Ralph Stanley gives a surprisingly candid look back on his long and incredible career as the patriarch of old-time mountain music. Marked by Dr. Ralph Stanley?s banjo picking, his brother Carter?s guitar playing, and their haunting and distinctive harmonies, the Stanley Brothers began their career in 1946 and blessed the world of bluegrass with hundreds of classic songs, including ?White Dove,? ?Rank Stranger,? and what has become Dr. Ralph?s signature song, ?Man of Constant Sorrow.? Carter died in 1966 after years of alcohol abuse, but Dr. Ralph Stanley carried on and is still at the top of his game, playing to audiences across the country today at age eighty-one. Rarely giving interviews, he now grants fans the book they have been waiting for, filled with frank recollections, from his boyhood of dire poverty in the Appalachian coalfields to his early musical success with his brother, to years of hard traveling on the road with the Clinch Mountain Boys, to the recent, jubilant revival of a sound he helped create. The story of how a musical art now popular around the world was crafted by two brothers from a dying mountain culture, Man of Constant Sorrow captures a life harmonized with equal measures of tragedy and triumph.

Book excerpt: A new anthology celebrating the witches and sorcerers of epic fantasy—featuring stories by George R. R. Martin, Scott Lynch, Megan Lindholm, and many others! Hot on the heels of Gardner Dozois’s acclaimed anthology The Book of Swords comes this companion volume devoted to magic. How could it be otherwise? For every Frodo, there is a Gandalf . . . and a Saruman. For every Dorothy, a Glinda . . . and a Wicked Witch of the West. What would Harry Potter be without Albus Dumbledore . . . and Severus Snape? Figures of wisdom and power, possessing arcane, often forbidden knowledge, wizards and sorcerers are shaped—or misshaped—by the potent magic they seek to wield. Yet though their abilities may be godlike, these men and women remain human—some might say all too human. Such is their curse. And their glory. In these pages, seventeen of today’s top fantasy writers—including award-winners Elizabeth Bear, John Crowley, Kate Elliott, K. J. Parker, Tim Powers, and Liz Williams—cast wondrous spells that thrillingly evoke the mysterious, awesome, and at times downright terrifying worlds where magic reigns supreme: worlds as far away as forever, and as near as next door. FEATURING SIXTEEN ALL-NEW STORIES: “The Return of the Pig” by K. J. Parker “Community Service” by Megan Lindholm “Flint and Mirror” by John Crowley “The Friends of Masquelayne the Incomparable” by Matthew Hughes “The Biography of a Bouncing Boy Terror: Chapter Two: Jumping Jack in Love” by Ysabeau S. Book Hold On Someone is on the Other Line

Download or read book Hold On Someone is on the Other Line written by Darmonica Alexander and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2011-03-30 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is about all of my dreams that I had that never came true. This book will also give the inside track of what I learned about me in my life as I travel through the journey of life. People have always talked about the truth about their life, but what about the whole truth, the good, the bad and the ugly? I am just a normal and regular person who is not perfect in no form shape or fashion. This book is just an insight of my life with all of the encounters coming from a very large family. By coming from a large family today caused many problems for me because I did not realize exactly how poor I was until I began to attend college. Not saying that most of our family didn’t pull themselves out of their situations. Happiness came from the inside of your to come true. This book will show that I thought that it was the choices that I made, but in the end I found out that it wasn’t only the choice, but it was other individual choices, but it was the decision of my parents that turned my life upside down and on its head. From my experience, as a child growing up here in America in the 60’s and 70’s life was to have dreams in our small little heads about becoming a fireman, sports photographer, doctor, or even a player playing sports. As a child having dreams are the responsibility of the parents to every effort to make their child dreams come true and this will make them successful and most of all very happy with their accomplishments. See I love the game of football and other sports as well, such as baseball, basketball and track and field, but football was my favorite. The reason that I loved football was my most favorite. The reason it was my favorite because on the football field this was where the smaller player could get even with the bigger bullies who wanted to talk trash to some of the small players. While I played the game of football in the little Pop Warner Football League, I silence the bigger boys without talking trash. As this book unfolds you will find out that other people in my life and bad timing played a role in my unsuccessful dreams. Then you will find out that my life was not only my decision alone. But on the side of all of this I had a good life and I maintained to stay happiness. Now if I had not exposed my life to you, many people would never know the pain and hardship that I experienced in my life time. I am still the same Darmonica who you have know in the past who love sports and love lending a helping hand where it’s needed. For the love of life is to love yourself, help another and take the worst of life and make the best of it, and I did just that. Without my family and friends I would not be the person who I am NOW! That’s why I say, Hold on, someone is on the other line!

Book The Ten Worlds

Download or read book The Ten Worlds written by Ash ElDifrawi and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2018-10-02 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What exactly is happiness that we spend our lives pursuing it more fiercely than anything else? The answer, Drs. Lickerman and ElDifrawi argue, is that happiness isn't just a good feeling but a special good feeling—in fact, the best good feeling we're capable of having. Enduring happiness is something we all want yet many of us fail to achieve. Look around you. How many people do you know who would say they feel a constant and powerful sense of satisfaction with their lives? How many people do you imagine wouldn't find their ability to be happy impaired by a significant loss, like the death of a parent, a spouse, or a child? How is it possible to be happy in the long-term when so many terrible things are destined to happen to us? In this highly engaging and eminently practical book—told in the form of a Platonic dialogue recounting real-life patient experiences—Drs. Lickerman and ElDifrawi assert that the reason genuine, long-lasting happiness is so difficult to achieve and maintain is that we're profoundly confused not only about how to go about it but also about what happiness is. In identifying nine basic erroneous views we all have about what we need to be happy—views they term the core delusions—Lickerman and ElDifrawi show us that our happiness depends not on our external possessions or even on our experiences but rather on the beliefs we have that shape our most fundamental thinking. These beliefs, they argue, create ten internal life-conditions, or worlds, through which we continuously cycle and that determine how happy we're able to be. Drawing on the latest scientific research as well as Buddhist philosophy, Lickerman and ElDifrawi argue that once we learn to embrace a correct understanding of happiness, we can free ourselves from the suffering the core delusions cause us and enjoy the kind of happiness we all want, the kind found in the highest of the Ten Worlds, the world of Enlightenment.
