Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Salman Abu Sitta was just ten years old when the Nakba-the mass expulsion of Palestinians in 1948-happened, forcing him from his home near Beersheba. Like many Palestinians of his generation, this traumatic loss and his enduring desire to return would be the defining features of his life from that moment on. Abu Sitta vividly evokes the vanished world of his family and home on the eve of the Nakba, giving a personal and very human face to the dramatic events of 1930s and 1940s Palestine as Zionist ambitions and militarization expanded under the British mandate. He chronicles his life in exile, from his family's flight to Gaza, his teenage years as a student in Nasser's Egypt, his formative years in 1960s London, his life as a family man and academic in Canada, to several sojourns in Kuwait. Abu Sitta's long and winding journey has taken him through many of the seismic events of the era, from the 1956 Suez War to the 1991 Gulf War. This rich and moving memoir is imbued throughout with a burning sense of justice and a determination to recover and document what rightfully belongs to his people, given expression in his groundbreaking mapping work on his homeland. Abu Sitta, with warmth and wit, tells his story and that of Palestine.
Download or read book Who Made Me Like This written by Godfrey "Huk" Bethea and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2009-03 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born in Brooklyn, New York and experiencing street life real early in my childhood, like around five and six years of age. Life in the streets caused a great imprint in my mind and an awesome impact on my way of thinking. This tremendous awareness in my youth gave new meaning to the word imprint. A few years later, at the age of nine our family, comprised of nine childrens plus my mom and dad, moved to this country town in Pennsylvania, called Lancaster. My Godfather called it the hilly country. My family consisted of six boys and three girls and to us this was a tramatic, overwhelming, and completly over the edge culture shock. It was devastating to say the least. Bewildered, fustrated, and confused, the only thing that kept my sanity was knowing that I was going back to New York, as soon as I finished school. That was my motivation, and that desire to return to Brooklyn, New York was my hope for many days to come.

Download or read book Examinations in Singapore written by Yap Kwang Tan and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2008 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first book to explore the development of Singapore's much-talked-about education and examination system, this volume juxtaposes examinations with its immediate context of education and wider context of politics, economy and society. The study covers three broad historical periods: Examinations in Singapore from 1891 to 1945; The Post-War Years from 1946 to the 1970s; and Charting Our Destiny from the 1980s to 2007. In the British period up to 1941, the local examinations were conducted by the vernacular schools, and external examinations by the University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate. There was a lack of systematic effort to establish a uniform system of education and examinations. During the Japanese Occupation, examinations were conducted by the Japanese authorities and, unexpectedly, the Cambridge examinations continued in the Sime Road Camp. In the post-war period and particularly after Singapore was granted self-government, the establishment of a national education system was followed by the emergence of national examinations: the Primary School Leaving Examinations and the Singapore-Cambridge GCE N/O/A Levels for every school-going child in Singapore. Thereafter, the nature of national examinations evolved with the changing needs of education and the nation. At the turn of the century, with the Ministry of Education's decision to take greater control of examinations, the Singapore Examinations and Assessment Board was established, to oversee new developments in examinations.Unlike most literature on education where examinations are often mentioned as an outcome of educational goals and objectives, this book focuses on examinations per se. Examinations have gained a momentum of their own, and it is interesting to note the development of examinations against the backdrop of the broader history of Singapore and of education in Singapore.
