Book Medieval and Early Modern Representations of Authority in Scotland and the British Isles

Download or read book Medieval and Early Modern Representations of Authority in Scotland and the British Isles written by Kate Buchanan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-20 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What use is it to be given authority over men and lands if others do not know about it? Furthermore, what use is that authority if those who know about it do not respect it or recognise its jurisdiction? And what strategies and 'language' -written and spoken, visual and auditory, material, cultural and political - did those in authority throughout the medieval and early modern era use to project and make known their power? These questions have been crucial since regulations for governance entered society and are found at the core of this volume. In order to address these issues from an historical perspective, this collection of essays considers representations of authority made by a cross-section of society within the British Isles. Arranged in thematic sections, the 14 essays in the collection bridge the divide between medieval and early modern to build up understanding of the developments and continuities that can be followed across the centuries in question. Whether crown or noble, government or church, burgh or merchant; all desired power and influence, but their means of representing authority were very different. These essays encompass a myriad of methods demonstrating power and disseminating the image of authority, including: material culture, art, literature, architecture and landscapes, saintly cults, speeches and propaganda, martial posturing and strategic alliances, music, liturgy and ceremonial display. Thus, this interdisciplinary collection illuminates the variable forms in which authority was presented by key individuals and institutions in Scotland and the British Isles. By placing these within the context of the European powers with whom they interacted, this volume also underlines the unique relationships developed between the people and those who exercised authority over them.

Book Lordship and Architecture in Medieval and Renaissance Scotland

Download or read book Lordship and Architecture in Medieval and Renaissance Scotland written by Richard D. Oram and published by Birlinn Ltd. This book was released on 2001-01-01 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These essays constitute the first radical reassessment since the nineteenth century of the role of architecture as an expression of lordship and status among Scottish secular and ecclesiastical elites in the period c.1124–c.1650. These studies of the architectural patronage of particular families or groups explore how the nobility operated socially and economically, as well as politically, in the organisation and structure of lordship throughout the medieval and renaissance periods. The contributors draw on the traditions and strengths of Scottish genealogical, archaeological and art-historical enquiry to illustrate key themes, which include: family or kindred styles in building on a local, regional or national level; builders' or patrons' motives; the scale and use of the buildings; and ascertainable changes in function, purpose and attitude.

Book Land Law and People in Medieval Scotland

Download or read book Land Law and People in Medieval Scotland written by Neville Cynthia J. Neville and published by Edinburgh University Press. This book was released on 2012-10-16 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This ambitious book, newly available in paperback, examines the encounter between Gaels and Europeans in Scotland in the central Middle Ages, offering new insights into an important period in the formation of the Scots' national identity. It is based on a close reading of the texts of several thousand charters, indentures, brieves and other written sources that record the business conducted in royal and baronial courts across the length and breadth of the medieval kingdom between 1150 and 1400.Under the broad themes of land, law and people, this book explores how the customs, laws and traditions of the native inhabitants and those of incoming settlers interacted and influenced each other. Drawing on a range of theoretical and methodological approaches, the author places her subject matter firmly within the recent historiography of the British Isles and demonstrates how the experience of Scotland was both similar to, and a distinct manifestation of, a wider process of Europeanisation.

Book Law and Legal Consciousness in Medieval Scotland

Download or read book Law and Legal Consciousness in Medieval Scotland written by Hector L. MacQueen and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-10-20 with total page 615 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the rise of a Scottish common law from the twelfth century on despite the absence until around 1500 of a secular legal profession. Key stimuli were the activity of church courts and canon lawyers in Scotland, coupled with the example provided by neighbouring England’s common law. The laity’s legal consciousness arose from exposure to law by way of constant participation in legal processes in court and daily transactions. This experience enabled some to become judges, pleaders in court and transactional lawyers and lay the foundations for an emergent professional group by the end of the medieval period.

Book The Minority of James V

Download or read book The Minority of James V written by Ken Emond and published by Birlinn Ltd. This book was released on 2019-11-07 with total page 547 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The defeat of the Scots in the Battle of Flodden in 1513 left many of the leaders of Scottish society, including King James IV, lying dead on the battlefield. The long and complex minority of King James V which followed is explored in detail in this book, bringing understanding to the evolving relationships among the Scots, English and French against the background of the wider European context of the early sixteenth century. The competing interests of England and France were personified in two of the Scottish Regents: Queen Margaret Tudor, the sister of Henry VIII, and John, Duke of Albany, James V's nearest male heir, who had been brought up in France and represented the French connection as much as the Scots. The interests of leading Scots' families, the Hamiltons and the Douglases, were also at the heart of the power struggle. The book offers a rare insight into a turbulent period of Scottish politics.
