Book excerpt: Raw and brutal, Charlie's Kid is a Bildungsroman, a bare-knuckled telling from childhood to parenthood, ripped from the experiences of a tortured soul shared so his son might understand. Yet, it also reveals angels and heroes who walk among us, whose moments of generosity and wisdom are shared and by which countless lives are saved daily. . It is a gripping account of all that should destroy a child as well as the good which can keep him from falling into the abyss of hopelessness and despair. The story is riveting, horrifying, mesmerizing, and unforgettable. It haunts, and it inspires. It is a story you cannot escape whose imagery stays with you.

Book excerpt: Homeless kids of all ages exist in every community, but few realize this. Because of their invisibility, the needs of these kids, a population of over 3 million, go largely unmet. The Charlie Book not only offers a range of ways ordinary compassionate people can help in their own communities, but it also gives background information to help understand the scope of this hidden problem. Additionally, it directs readers to existing resources.Schools districts must have a trained homeless liaison to identify and assist students experiencing homelessness. The federal McKinney-Vento Education for Homeless Children and Youth Act, reauthorized in December 2015 as part of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), specifies duties and responsibilities of these liaisons. One is to develop local resources to help the students succeed in school. "Charlie," for whom the book is named, was instrumental in passage of homeless children and youth's educational rights. Society's choice in dealing with widespread angst about income inequality, racial strife, domestic and international violence, and personal challenges could angrily tumble into an apathetic stupor or embrace compassion that spurs action. The Charlie Book: 60 Ways to Help Homeless Kids grew out of the desire to create a "compassion epidemic" that would spill out across the country to ease the suffering of millions of homeless children and youth. It was created and reviewed by people with years of experience working with homeless kids. This concise handbook will provide the know-how for adults and kids, civic organizations and faith communities, scout troops and neighborhood associations to make a viable difference in their local communities for the mostly invisible families and youth experiencing a variety of shapes of homelessness. Those involved in this book believe that good people doing good things will mitigate the apathy and anxiety that grabs headlines and shatters lives. The Charlie Book offers a simple, doable approach to providing tangible help to young people striving to get an education despite the formidable challenges they face. The antidote to apathy is action. The Charlie Book, offers simple activities that can simply change lives for the better.

Book excerpt: Two short stories I've written were published; though not by me. I've written eight manuscripts and given them as gifts to certain individuals and families I've known who underwent extremely traumatic life-changing events. This one is a first hand telling about a man whose youth was that of an abused and tortured captive only to be abandoned at an early age and to fall through society's cracks into streets beset by gangs and sexual predators. This tells of his going on to become a highly decorated and publicized combat veteran and some of the excursions he was part of while in-country, especially Iraq. Only, to be discharged and return to a life of being homeless where he meets a wife, faces down a gangland threat only to lose his wife while his identity is being assumed. In ruin, he takes his newborn son and raises that son in the only world he knows, homelessness. Where he still resides though his son is able to leave his world and go to college. It tells how his faith protects his son from the unending and recurring visions of brutality accompanying the screams within his mind. This is my best gift to that son, my son. I now share what I did not during his youth so he might have rest within the knowledge that his father is a homeless man.

Don¿t you know how pious we must be? He¿s coming at any moment. We must be ready.¿ ¿From The Twelfth Imam As the apocalyptic leaders of Iran call for the annihilation of Israel and the U.S., CIA operative David Shirazi is sent into Tehran with one objective: use all means necessary to disrupt Iran¿s nuclear weapons program¿without leaving American fingerprints, and without triggering a regional war. At extreme personal risk, Shirazi undertakes his assignment. A native Farsi speaker whose family escaped from Iran in 1979, he couldn¿t be better prepared for the mission. But none of his training has prepared Shirazi for what will happen next. An obscure religious cleric is suddenly hailed throughout the region as the Islamic messiah known as the Mahdi or the Twelfth Imam. News of his miracles, healings, signs, and wonders spreads like wildfire, as do rumors of a new and horrific war. With the prophecy of the Twelfth Imam seemingly fulfilled, Iran¿s leaders prepare to strike Israel and bring about the End of Days. Shirazi must take action, but the clock is ticking.
