Parents divorced. •Chapter 2 Louis XVI and the revolution, first Dauphin is born, second son is Charles Louis. Fairly long description on what led to the revolution. Family life. •Chapter 3 The revolution intensifies the struggles to maintain order. The opposition helped by the Orleans branch of the family. Attack on the Bastille, paid for by the Orleans group. •Chapter 4 I arrive in Montreal, move to Timmins looking for gold. Find a wife instead. Work in Hotel and goldmine. Move to Toronto. •Chapter 5 The Royal family is jailed in the Temple. Father Louis XVI is sentenced to death and beheaded. Mother Marie-Antoinette accused of sex crimes with son is also beheaded. Charles Louis becomes Louis XVII at 8 years old. Alone in prison with his sister. Escapes and is substituted by a sick older boy. •Chapter 6 Louis XVII escapes from jail, his early travels in and out of the clutches of various groups. He ends up in Germany and works with watches, a trade his father started with him when he was very small. •Chapter 7 I work for the department store Robert Simpson. Get executive training and promotions. Tragedy and then a wonderful family life. •Chapter 8 The substitute Louis XVII dies in the Temple on week before he must be handed to the one province in France that is not in the revolution (Vendee). Spain also wants Louis XVII free. Conveniently this is all too late. The burial at St Marquerite cemetery where the caretaker digs up the body out of a mass grave and buries it near the church wall. •Chapter 9 False Dauphins are popping up all over France and even one in North America. All get found out except one. He does not show up until the uncle is declared king of France (Louis XVIII). He has lived for many years in Germany. •Chapter 10 I go from retailing into real estate. My father dies and I become the senior de Bourbon. I have some success and finally decide to take some time off to sail my sailboat across Lake Ontario down the Hudson River past New York to Florida. I love it and come back to do it again. •Chapter 11 Louis XVII as Karl Wilhelm Naundorff in Germany. His enemies pursue him, false accusations, jail terms. He gets married, has children. •Chapter 12 His Crossen memoirs in his own writing he tells his own story. •Chapter 13 He is again going to be attacked so he decides to return to Paris to reclaim his name. He meets with 50 old members of the court. Almost all recognize him and he gets ready to take hid case to court. His trek to America was prompted by his “purchase” of two thousand acres situated on the bank of the Ohio River from the Scioto Land Company—the institution that infamously swindled French buyers and sold them worthless titles to property. When de Luzières arrived and realized he had been defrauded, he chose, in a momentous decision, not to return home to France. Instead, he committed to a life in North America and began planning a move to the Mississippi River valley. De Luzières dreamed of creating a vast commercial empire that would stretch across the frontier, extending the entire length of the Ohio River and also down the Mississippi from Ste. Genevieve to New Orleans. Though his grandiose goal was never realized, de Luzières energetically pursued other important initiatives. Following the battle of Pavia, Pope Clement VII joined (1526) the French-led League of Cognac to resist the threatened Habsburg domination of Europe. Emperor Charles V appealed to the German diet for support and raised an army, which entered Italy in 1527 and joined the imperial forces from Milan, commanded by the Duke of Bourbon. This army marched on Rome, hoping to detach the pope from the league. The many Lutherans in its ranks boasted that they came with hemp halters to hang the cardinals and a silk one for the pope. Rome fell on 6 May 1527, Bourbon being killed in the first assault. Discipline collapsed, and the city was savagely pillaged for a week before some control was restored. Judith Hook's book is here reprinted with a foreward by Patrick Collinson.

In the mid-fifteenth century, Simon de Varie commissioned such a book. Completed in 1455, it included five priceless works by the most eminent French painter of the time, Jean Fouquet, as well as other striking paintings by two of his contemporaries. In the seventeenth century, Simon de Varie's book was divided into three sections and sold as separate volumes. Two of these volumes are today in the Royal Library in The Hague. The third volume--thought lost until 1984, when it surfaced in a private collection and was subsequently acquired by the Getty Museum--contains the first miniatures by Jean Fouquet to have been discovered in eighty years. This beautiful book will reproduce in color all of the miniatures and historiated initials in the original manuscript, along with selected text pages with secondary decoration. Comparative illustrations also accompany the two essays in the volume. Marrow's text addresses the role of books of hours in late medieval culture; the contents and form of de Varie's Hours; and the relationship of the miniatures by Fouquet to the rest of the artist's oeuvre. In a related essay, Francois Avril discusses the position of Simon de Varie and his family in mid-fifteenth-century France. The publication of The Hours of Simon de Varie adds to the Getty's impressive list of publications on illuminated manuscripts begun in 1990 and including the widely acclaimed facsimile Mira calligraphiae monumenta.
