Book King of the Moonshiners

Download or read book King of the Moonshiners written by Bruce E. Stewart and published by Univ. of Tennessee Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Lewis R. Redmond was an archetypal moonshiner. On March 1, 1876, the twenty-one-year-old North Carolinian shot and killed a U.S. deputy marshal who tried to arrest him on charges of illicit distilling. He then fled to Pickens County, South Carolina, where, within three years, he gained national notoriety as the "King of the Moonshiners." More than any other individual moonshiner in southern Appalachia, Redmond captured the imagination of middle-class Americans. Then, as now, media coverage had a lot to do with his reputation.".

ISBN-10: 1-58477-628-5 Cloth. $95.* Early histories by local lawyers, such as this one, are often quite valuable because they were written by people who were steeped in local traditions and had access to practitioners of the preceding generation, who were invaluable sources of fact and anecdote about their generation and the generation that preceded them. Written during the early 1860s, this book draws on interviews with people who practiced before Maine was a state and could recall anecdotes from the colonial period. Along with historical chapters and biographical sketches of such lawyers as Simon Greenleaf and William B. Sewall, the book has information about "social usages of the bar," popular law books and how lawyers from other colonies were treated.

Book American Civil War 6 volumes

Download or read book American Civil War 6 volumes written by Spencer C. Tucker and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2013-09-30 with total page 3030 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This expansive, multivolume reference work provides a broad, multidisciplinary examination of the Civil War period ranging from pre-Civil War developments and catalysts such as the Mexican-American War to the rebuilding of the war-torn nation during Reconstruction. The Civil War was undoubtedly the most important and seminal event in 19th-century American history. Students who understand the Civil War have a better grasp of the central dilemmas in the American historical narrative: states rights versus federalism, freedom versus slavery, the role of the military establishment, the extent of presidential powers, and individual rights versus collective rights. Many of these dilemmas continue to shape modern society and politics. This comprehensive work facilitates both detailed reading and quick referencing for readers from the high school level to senior scholars in the field. The exhaustive coverage of this encyclopedia includes all significant battles and skirmishes; important figures, both civilian and military; weapons; government relations with Native Americans; and a plethora of social, political, cultural, military, and economic developments. The entries also address the many events that led to the conflict, the international diplomacy of the war, the rise of the Republican Party and the growing crisis and stalemate in American politics, slavery and its impact on the nation as a whole, the secession crisis, the emergence of the "total war" concept, and the complex challenges of the aftermath of the conflict.

Book Local Matters

    Book Details:
  • Author : Christopher Waldrep
  • Publisher : University of Georgia Press
  • Release : 2011-12-01
  • ISBN : 082034205X

Download or read book Local Matters written by Christopher Waldrep and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2011-12-01 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much of the current reassessment of race, culture, and criminal justice in the nineteenth-century South has been based on intensive community studies. Drawing on previously untapped sources, the nine original papers collected here represent some of the best new work on how racial justice can be shaped by the particulars of time and place. Although each essay is anchored in the local, several important larger themes emerge across the volume--such as the importance of personality and place, the movement of former slaves from the capriciousness of "plantation justice" to the (theoretically) more evenhanded processes of the courts, and the increased presence of government in daily aspects of American life. Local Matters cites a wide range of examples to support these themes. One essay considers the case of a quasi-free slave in Natchez, Mississippi--himself a slaveowner--who was "reined in" by his master through the courts, while another shows how federal aims were subverted during trials held in the aftermath of the 1876 race riots in Ellenton, South Carolina. Other topics covered include the fear of black criminality as a motivation of Klan activity; the career of Thomas Ruffin, slaveowner and North Carolina Supreme Court Justice; blacks and the ballot in Washington County, Texas; the overturned murder conviction of a North Carolina slave who had killed a white man; the formation of a powerful white bloc in Vicksburg, Mississippi; agitation by black and white North Carolina women for greater protections from abusive white male elites; and slaves, crime, and the common law in New Orleans. Together, these studies offer new insights into the nature of law and the fate of due process at different stages of a highly racialized society.

Download or read book William Baldy Smith written by Stephen Nicholas Siciliano and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2022-06-30 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lauded for gallantry at Antietam and demoted for insubordination after Fredericksburg, Major General William "Baldy" Smith remains a controversial figure of the Civil War. His criticism of the Union high command made him unpopular with both peers and superiors. Yet his insight as an officer and an engineer enabled him to offer effective solutions to challenges faced by fellow generals. In this first comprehensive biography, Smith emerges as a field commander with deep concern for his men and a fearless critic of the failures of the Union generalship, who was recognized for a strategic perspective that helped save Federal armies.
