Book The Unity of Plutarch s Work

Download or read book The Unity of Plutarch s Work written by Anastasios Nikolaidis and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2008-12-10 with total page 869 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume of collected essays explores the premise that Plutarch’s work, notwithstanding its amazing thematic multifariousness, constantly pivots on certain ideological pillars which secure its unity and coherence. So, unlike other similar books which, more or less, concentrate on either the Lives or the Moralia or on some particular aspect(s) of Plutarch’s œuvre, the articles of the present volume observe Plutarch at work in both Lives and Moralia, thus bringing forward and illustrating the inner unity of his varied literary production. The subject-matter of the volume is uncommonly wide-ranging and the studies collected here inquire into many important issues of Plutarchean scholarship: the conditions under which Plutarch’s writings were separated into two distinct corpora, his methods of work and the various authorial techniques employed, the interplay between Lives and Moralia, Plutarch and politics, Plutarch and philosophy, literary aspects of Plutarch’s œuvre, Plutarch on women, Plutarch in his epistemological and socio-historical context. In sum, this book brings Plutarchean scholarship to date by revisiting and discussing older and recent problematization concerning Plutarch, in an attempt to further illuminate his personality and work.

This book was released on 1990-08-01 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. In this book, the author presents a Kierkegaard that goes beyond what we read of him in many textbooks. Aside from a look at Kierkegaard the prophet, the denouncer of the social injustice and of the religious and ecclesiastical hypocrisy, Álvarez treats readers to a detailed examination of the times that formed Kierkegaard’s teachings and philosphies. Eliseo Perez-Alvarez studied theology and philosophy in Mexico City, Atlanta, Chicago and Copenhagen. He has been professor, pastor, editor and coordinator for Hispanic Ministries in Mexico, USA, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. He currently is an Associate Professor of Latino Theology and Mission at the Lutheran Seminary Program in the Southwest in Austin, Texas.

  • Release : 2010
  • ISBN : 9875992755
  • Pages : 192 pages

Download or read book El jefe psic pata written by Hugo Marietán and published by Libros del Zorzal. This book was released on 2010 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Purification in the Prophecy the Purgatory

Download or read book Purification in the Prophecy the Purgatory written by Hernán Afanador-Kafuri and published by Palibrio. This book was released on 2014-01-28 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The work of Dr. Argimiro Ruano on Escathology truly impacted me. And when I read his Cuadernos de Teologa Pastoral / Notebooks about Pastoral Theology, I decided to base my doctoral thesis on them, especially on the topic of Biblical Escathology, which has caught the attention and attracted the interest of readers not only of Christian readers, but of everyone who seek knowledge about the hereafter, about what takes place after death. In accordance with Robero Fernndez Valladares, Professor at the University of Puerto Rico, this work is essential to learn the theological and biblical foundation regarding Purgatory as well as Martin Luthers thoughts about this doctrine. Dr. Fernndez also states: The analysis of faith and of purification by faith is one of the best parts of the book, above all the explanation of these two principles: believing to have been justified is not to be justified and faith does not justify, but the grace that comes from faith []. This is a fundamental book for every believer as well as for pastoral leaders in our communities (El Visitante de Puerto Rico / Puerto Ricos Visitor, Oct. 19, 1991, p. 19).

Book The House of the Pain of Others

Download or read book The House of the Pain of Others written by Julián Herbert and published by Graywolf Press. This book was released on 2019-04-16 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A brilliant work of historical excavation with profound echoes in an age redolent with violence and xenophobia Early in the twentieth century, amid the myths of progress and modernity that underpinned Mexico’s ruling party, some three hundred Chinese immigrants—close to half of the Cantonese residents of the newly founded city of Torreón—were massacred over the course of three days. It is considered the largest slaughter of Chinese people in the history of the Americas, but more than a century later, the facts continue to be elusive, mistaken, and repressed. “And what do you know about the Chinese people who were killed here?” Julián Herbert asks anyone who will listen. An exorcism of persistent and discomfiting ghosts, The House of the Pain of Others attempts a reckoning with the 1911 massacre. Looping, digressive, and cinematic, Herbert blends reportage, personal reflection, essay, and academic research to portray the historical context as well as the lives of the perpetrators and victims of the “small genocide.” This brilliant historical excavation echoes profoundly in an age redolent with violence and xenophobia.

Book Space Time and Language in Plutarch

Download or read book Space Time and Language in Plutarch written by Aristoula Georgiadou and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2017-10-10 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Space and time' have been key concepts of investigation in the humanities in recent years. In the field of Classics in particular, they have led to the fresh appraisal of genres such as epic, historiography, the novel and biography, by enabling a close focus on how ancient texts invest their representations of space and time with a variety of symbolic and cultural meanings. This collection of essays by a team of international scholars seeks to make a contribution to this rich interdisciplinary field, by exploring how space and time are perceived, linguistically codified and portrayed in the biographical and philosophical work of Plutarch of Chaeronea (1st-2nd centuries CE). The volume's aim is to show how philological approaches, in conjunction with socio-cultural readings, can shed light on Plutarch's spatial terminology and clarify his conceptions of time, especially in terms of the ways in which he situates himself in his era's fascination with the past. The volume's intended readership includes Classicists, intellectual and cultural historians and scholars whose field of expertise embraces theoretical study of space and time, along with the linguistic strategies used to portray them in literary or historical texts.
