Book Everything to Play For

Download or read book Everything to Play For written by Marijam Did and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2024-09-17 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everything To Play For asks if videogames can achieve egalitarian goals instead of fuelling hyper-materialist, reactionary agendas. Combining cultural theory and materialist critiques with accessible language and personal anecdotes, industry insider Marijam Did engages both novices and seasoned connoisseurs. From the innovations of Pong and Doom to the intricate multiplayer or narrative-driven games, the author highlights the multifaceted stories of the gaming communities and the political actors who organise among them. Crucially, the focus also includes the people who make the games, shedding light on the brutal processes necessary to bring titles to the public. The videogame industry, now larger than the film and music industries combined, has a proven ability to challenge the status quo. With a rich array of examples, Did argues for a nuanced understanding of gaming's influence so that this extraordinary power can be harnessed for good.

Book excerpt: Everyone says I’m a bad girl. They’re only partly right—I don’t let fear rule me, and I certainly don’t care what people think. But I draw the line at sleeping with the enemy. As the daughter of Briar’s head hockey coach, I’d be vilified if I hooked up with a player from a rival team. And that’s who Jake Connelly is. Harvard’s star forward is arrogant, annoying, and too attractive for his own good. But fate is cruel—I require his help to secure a much-coveted internship, and the sexy jerk isn’t making it easy for me. I need Connelly to be my fake boyfriend. For every fake date…he wants a real one. Which means this bad girl is in big trouble. Nothing good can come from sneaking around with Jake Connelly. My father would kill me, my friends will revolt, and my post-college career is on the line. But while it’s getting harder and harder to resist Jake’s oozing sex appeal and cocky grin, I refuse to fall for him. That’s the one risk I’m not willing to take. Book Current and Future Charitable Gaming in New Mexico

Download or read book Current and Future Charitable Gaming in New Mexico written by Noelle Joy Bartl and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies current charitable gaming in New Mexico specific to lotteries, drawings, and raffles, and the future of these games influenced by the potential to market and sell over the Internet. Methodologies include a literature review, a general public survey, a survey of twenty-five New Mexico agencies that host raffles or drawings, a survey of NSFRE New Mexico membership, and six key informant interviews. Finds that charitable gaming is a strong and viable fundraising tool and will continue to have a measurable impact on the non-profit sector. Also finds evidence that the Internet will change the dynamics of charitable gambling for the future. Recommends that New Mexico non-profits consider drawings and raffles; that fundraisers evaluate their target audience and acquire prizes to suit that audience; and that agencies use the Internet to promote their drawing or raffle but not sell tickets over the Internet until state and federal laws are in place.
