Book Balancing the Scales of Justice

Download or read book Balancing the Scales of Justice written by Anthony Crubaugh and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2001-01-01 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent revisionist history has questioned the degree of social change attributable to the French Revolution. In Balancing the Scales of Justice, Anthony Crubaugh tests this claim by examining the effects of revolutionary changes in local justice on the inhabitants of one region in rural France. Crubaugh illuminates two poorly understood institutions in eighteenth-century France: seigneurial justice and the revolutionary justice of the peace. He finds that justice was typically slow and expensive in the lords&’ courts, thus making it difficult for rural inhabitants to benefit from official channels of justice. By contrast, revolutionary reforms gave people the opportunity to submit quarrels to trusted and elected justices of the peace who adjudicated disputes quickly and inexpensively. By juxtaposing seigneurial justice in the ancien r&égime with the institution of the justice of the peace after 1789, Crubaugh highlights how revolutionary changes in the system of dispute resolution profoundly affected members of rural French society and their relations with the French state. Over time rural dwellers came to accept the primacy of the state in resolving disputes, and the state thereby partially achieved its long-standing goal of penetrating rural areas.

Book The Turbulent Past of a Little Piece of Paradise

Download or read book The Turbulent Past of a Little Piece of Paradise written by Henry Becket and published by . This book was released on 2023-04-20 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A history of the Charente Maritime. Given the region's fortuitously benign geographic location in S W France which even made it a relatively bearable place in which to live out the last glacial period, it is hardly surprising that modern man and his predecessors have found it so congenial and worth fighting over And this goes a long way to explaining the peculiar richness of its history Evidence for this abounds, whether it be castles, churches, or even casinos, and this book aims to help the reader discover it for themselves From the age of the dinosaurs, through the early ages of man, the Roman occupation, the Middle Ages, right up to the present day, the author links world events to their manifestation in the Charente Maritime And it's not only wars and religion or indeed, wars of religion There is the arrival of the railways, the development of cognac and oyster farming, the start of seaside holidays, La Belle Epoque Les Annees Folles And for those wishing to explore further, in every sense, a voluminous bibliography helps point the way, together with an index of placenames that links what you see with what happened there. About the Author Henry and his wife bought their first house in the Charente Maritime in the mid Eighties, for the price of a lock up in the wrong end of Watford, where they lived at the time They loved it so much that they bought a semi ruined and much larger house a bit nearer the coast a few years later Fast forward three decades and the restoration was eventually finished In a typical year these days they'll spend around half the year there. His expertise, such that it is, in history was furnished by three years at Cambridge, where he had the good fortune to be taught by such stars of the era as Norman Stone, Roy Porter, Vic Gatrell and Quentin Skinner Reading widely in the years which followed, almost invariably in a train or a plane on the way to do something significantly less interesting, helped, and his writing skills were honed by years of writing TV commercials for, he suspects, a largely unappreciative audience.

Download or read book Along the Road written by Lutz Klassen and published by Aarhus Universitetsforlag. This book was released on 2014-10-27 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume takes a new look at causewayed enclosures in South Scandinavia based on a research area restricted to the Djursland Peninsula in eastern Jutland. The Djursland Peninsula in eastern Jutland was selected as region of concentration because of the richness of the region in terms of megalithic graves and burial mounds and because it has the largest number by far of known Neolithic enclosures within the northern TRB Group distribution area. Given that the awareness of as many enclosures as possible is necessary in any attempt to evaluate their significance for Neolithic societies within a given area, a major part of this work is devoted to the development of predictive modelling for the detection of enclosures in the landscape. It is only in relation to this step that it is possible to engage with such questions as the reasons for which certain locations were chosen as enclosure sites and how these relate to the history of Neolithic settlement within the wider region. The latter is at the heart of practically all settlement archaeological studies of the period under consideration in South Scandinavia. However, it has never been critically reviewed nor tested by comparisons with the results from other regions. A separate section is devoted to examining the European dimension of the Scandinavian enclosures in closer detail.

Download or read book The Unseen Terror written by Richard Ballard and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2010-02-17 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the fall of the Bastille to the rise of Napoleon, Paris was the stage for most of the greatest crises of the French Revolution. Indeed, for many historians, the Revolution was a distinctly Parisian phenomenon, restricted to the galleries of the Tuileries and the chambers of the Jacobin Club. But Paris was only one setting for a national terror which was frequently and painfully felt outside the capital. What happened during these momentous years beyond Paris? How did the revolution spread from the capital and how did it affect people living in the provinces? Drawing on newly discovered and unpublished sources which cast fresh light on the lives of everyday men and women caught up in the revolutionary ferment, "The Unseen Terror" vividly portrays the impact of revolution in the French provinces. Focusing on the Charente-Maritime department on the west coast, Richard Ballard explores the course of the Revolution outside the palaces and prisons of the capital, reclaiming the pivotal but long-neglected stories of revolutionary and counter-revolutionary tensions in the French countryside. "The Unseen Terror" offers many illuminating insights into how and why the revolution took hold so far away from the French capital. It offers a unique glimpse of the violent events of the Revolution 'from below' and is a rich and important contribution to a fuller understanding of French history.

Book Between France and New France

Download or read book Between France and New France written by Gilles Proulx and published by Dundurn. This book was released on 1984-01-01 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between France and New France is an absorbing look at life abroad the sailing vessels which plied the North Atlantic during the French colonial era in North America. Focusing on the first half of the eighteenth century and the Seven Years' War period, this book analyses four major aspects of the crossing: martime traffic and the outfit of vessels; the Atlantic course and navigation; the people and their occupations; and life aboard the ship. Together they present a fascinating view of sea life. Gilles Proulx has used official correspondence between the Minister of marine and the Canadian colonial authorities, and the papers seized on boarded vessels, as well as over one hundred log-books and personal diaries, to obtain a wealth of detail about the rigours of the colonial shipboard experience. In addition, many photographs, both colour and black and white, have been included to illustrate this exciting period in Canadian history.
