Book excerpt: Previous studies indicate that the work hardening characteristics of a Vintage III 2090-T81 12.7-mm (0.5-in.) plate is highly dependent on the through-thickness position. This dependency has been linked to two distinctly different microstructures existing as laminates within the plate. An investigation of the two microstructures by both optical and transmission electron microscopy reveal a difference in the distribution of grains and subgrains. It is believed that these factors affect the work hardening characteristics by governing the manner in which slip is transmitted from grain to grain. The findings are positive as they suggest a practical means by which improvements in work hardening can be obtained through modifications of the microstructure at the polygranular level. 24 refs., 7 figs.

Book excerpt: The microstructural alterations occurring in the heat affected zone of precipitation hardenable aluminum alloys was investigated using transmission electron microscop. The nature and scope of these metallurgical changes are influenced by several factors which include the type of alloy being welded, the initial (preweld) heat treatment the welding conditions, the postweld heat treatment (if any), and the location of the particular point being evaluated relative to the path of the heat source. Samples of two alloys, 2219 (Al-Cu) and 6061 (Al-Mg-Si-Cu), were heat treated to known conditions and then welded. Subsequent examination revealed a difference in the sponses of the strengthening precipitates of the two alloys.

Book excerpt: 2D and 3D characterization and image analysis have been performed to measure the microstructural changes associated with: different Sr, Fe and Mn levels, the casting process (Gravity Die Casting vs. Lost Foam Casting, LFC) and the solution heat treatments in A319 alloy. The evolution of microstructure in Al-Si-Cu alloy with different alloying elements addition was also studied by thermal analysis. The microstructure consists of hard inclusions, i.e. eutectic Si, iron-intermetallics and Al2Cu phases, and pores. The effect on mechanical properties of the alloys has been monitored by Vickers hardness measurement and tensile tests. Surface damage observations are performed on A319 alloys with different Fe content during in-situ tensile test, which allows following the development and localization of the deformation and cracks. Digital image correlation measurement and fractography highlighted the role of iron-intermetallics in the cracks initiation and propagation. Tensile tests on LFC A319 samples with two different heat treatment conditions were performed in-situ under Laboratory Computed Tomography. Strain measurements from digital volume correlation and observed damage mechanisms show that cracks initiate at hard inclusions in the areas with sufficient stress concentrations, which are mainly provided by large pores, and often propagate through the fracture of Al2Cu, iron-intermetallics, as well as through Si particles rather than by their decohesion from the matrix.
