Book Low Thermal Noise Coating for New Generation Gravitational Wave Detectors

Download or read book Low Thermal Noise Coating for New Generation Gravitational Wave Detectors written by Alex Amato and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The work of this thesis is the study of mechanical and optical properties of coatings (mainly deposited by IBS technique at LMA), with the purpose of finding a new possible material with the aim of reduce the coating thermal noise in current and in future gravitational-wave detectors (GWDs). The mechanical characterization done at LMA regards measurements of internal friction and elastic constants by the ring-down method using a Gentle Nodal Suspension (GeNS) system. The optical characterization has been done using spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE). Thanks to a collaboration with the OPTMATLAB of the University of Genova, I was able to characterize the samples using SE in a wide-range energy region (from UV to NIR). The first analysed samples are the coatings currently used in GWDs, SiO2, Ta2O5 and Ti:Ta2O5. Then, Nb2O5, Nb:TiO2, Zr:Ta2O5, SiC and SiNx have been characterize as high-refractive index coatings, whereas MgF2 and AlF3 have been studied with the purpose of replace the low-refractive index, reducing the total coating thickness, hence the coating thermal noise. Among the investigated coatings, Zr:Ta2O5 and SiNx provided the most promising results in term of internal friction. Important finding have been achieved regarding the theory of the internal friction of amorphous oxides and the optical and mechanical characterization of the samples.

Book Anelastic Relaxation In Crystalline Solids

Download or read book Anelastic Relaxation In Crystalline Solids written by A.S. Nowick and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 695 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anelastic Relaxation in Crystalline Solids provides an overview of anelasticity in crystals. This book discusses the various physical and chemical phenomena in crystalline solids. Comprised of 20 chapters, this volume begins with a discussion on the formal theory of anelasticity, and then explores the anelastic behavior, which is a manifestation of internal relaxation process. This text lays the groundwork for the formal theory by introducing the postulates. Other chapters explore the different dynamical methods that are frequently used in studying anelasticity. The reader is then introduced to the physical origin of anelastic relaxation process in terms of atomic model. This text also discusses the various types of point defects in crystals, including elementary point defects, composite defects, and self-interstitial defects. The final chapter provides relevant information on the various frequency ranges used in the study. This book is intended for crystallographers, mechanical engineers, metallurgical engineers, solid-state physicists, materials scientists, and researchers.

Book Fundamentals Of Interferometric Gravitational Wave Detectors Second Edition

Download or read book Fundamentals Of Interferometric Gravitational Wave Detectors Second Edition written by Peter R Saulson and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2017-02-16 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'The content of the Saulson’s book remains valid and offers a versatile introduction to gravitational wave astronomy. The book is appropriate for undergraduate students and can be read by graduate students and researchers who want to be involved in either the theoretical or the experimental traits of the study of gravitational waves.'Contemporary PhysicsLIGO's recent discovery of gravitational waves was headline news around the world. Many people will want to understand more about what a gravitational wave is, how LIGO works, and how LIGO functions as a detector of gravitational waves. This book aims to communicate the basic logic of interferometric gravitational wave detectors to students who are new to the field. It assumes that the reader has a basic knowledge of physics, but no special familiarity with gravitational waves, with general relativity, or with the special techniques of experimental physics. All of the necessary ideas are developed in the book. The first edition was published in 1994. Since the book is aimed at explaining the physical ideas behind the design of LIGO, it stands the test of time. For the second edition, an Epilogue has been added; it brings the treatment of technical details up to date, and provides references that would allow a student to become proficient with today's designs.

Book Harnessing Light

Download or read book Harnessing Light written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1998-09-25 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optical science and engineering affect almost every aspect of our lives. Millions of miles of optical fiber carry voice and data signals around the world. Lasers are used in surgery of the retina, kidneys, and heart. New high-efficiency light sources promise dramatic reductions in electricity consumption. Night-vision equipment and satellite surveillance are changing how wars are fought. Industry uses optical methods in everything from the production of computer chips to the construction of tunnels. Harnessing Light surveys this multitude of applications, as well as the status of the optics industry and of research and education in optics, and identifies actions that could enhance the field's contributions to society and facilitate its continued technical development.

This book was released on 2022-08-04 with total page 615 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The steering committee was specifically asked to (1) provide an overview of the current state of astronomy and astrophysics science, and technology research in support of that science, with connections to other scientific areas where appropriate; (2) identify the most compelling science challenges and frontiers in astronomy and astrophysics, which shall motivate the committee’s strategy for the future; (3) develop a comprehensive research strategy to advance the frontiers of astronomy and astrophysics for the period 2022-2032 that will include identifying, recommending, and ranking the highest-priority research activities; (4) utilize and recommend decision rules, where appropriate, that can accommodate significant but reasonable deviations in the projected budget or changes in urgency precipitated by new discoveries or unanticipated competitive activities; (5) assess the state of the profession, including workforce and demographic issues in the field, identify areas of concern and importance to the community, and where possible, provide specific, actionable, and practical recommendations to the agencies and community to address these areas. This report proposes a broad, integrated plan for space- and ground-based astronomy and astrophysics for the decade 2023-2032. It also lays the foundations for further advances in the following decade.
